Hmm.
Looks like Mazzonne didn't want him.

By now you've almost certainly heard all about the drama surrounding Texas A&M and the decommitment of top recruit Tate Martell. And on Thursday, Martell's father shed some light onto why his son made the decision to shy away from playing for the Aggies and re-open his recruitment.

According to an interview with Rivals.com, Al Martell, Tate's father, says the reason his son is no longer committed to Texas A&M is simple: They didn't exactly get along with new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone.

Well, correction: They actually had no relationship with Mazzone at all, who basically ignored Tate and the family in several trips to College Station.

"Tate ran a good campaign with them and found a love affair really quick," Al Martell told Rivals. "Everybody was really comfortable with it. I was comfortable with it up until shortly after the Mazzone arrival.

"We were there at the end of January and again in February and then a third time in March after the Ohio State visit. Just making the trips and through it all, I try to keep my opinions and feelings what I see as a parent when we're on those trips, but it was different."

The elder Martell continued, explaining that the family gave Mazzone a second and third chance to show the family to open the lines of communication. And it just never happened.

"It was different with Mazzone with the whole communication," Al Martell said. "Mazzone had been there two weeks for our visit in January, he had been there maybe all of 10 days, so I get it. If the guy didn't want to talk a whole lot, he's still feeling out his job and his co-workers and his staff and where he fits in.

"I get that but when you go out a month later, for two days on that trip, didn't talk to him once and then when we were there in March for their scrimmage, again, we were there for four days and not once did Mazzone ever talk, and I was five feet from him. Not a handshake, not anything."

Now obviously there are two sides to every story, and because we're talking about a college coach and an unsigned prospect, there's a good chance that we'll never hear Mazzone's version of the events. In his defense, even if the coach could have handled the situation better, the Martell family could have as well. As Al Martell mentioned, he and his son did openly discuss and visit other schools while Tate was committed to A&M, with Tate even going so far as to call Ohio State his "dream school" following a visit. Either way, in looking back, it seems like this breakup was the best for both parties.

Clearly, former Texas A&M offensive coordinator Jake Spavital (who Martell committed to) thought the young QB was a better fit for his offense than Mazzone did, and clearly Martell still has plenty of suitors going forward.

Hopefully, this puts an end to all the drama between the two parties, and everyone can just move on.

If true I definitely don't blame them. But it would then suggest Mazzone doesn't talk to his assistants either. If Morehead's boss didn't like him or think Tate was a good fit, why would Morehead go off on Twitter about commitment?

An assistant should never go off on Twitter no matter what, Morehead has already shown himself to be an idiot v

On the other hand, After reading the article, how hard was Papa Bear Martell working to get to know the new offensive coach! Sounds Murrayish IMHO.

Or Tate, I know I would be doing everything I could to find out everything about Mazzone's scheme. I would make sure I fit well before signing.

assuming talking would not have violated any recruiting rules, then this makes no sense. Recruits and families don't like being ignored or even feeling like they are being ignored.

But this sort of goes with what we hear about the program. Top notch corner last year (or was it the year before) that went to Alabama because he said A&M coaches basically ignored him.

As I said last year, Sumlin isn't the answer and I wish we would just move on instead of wasting everybody's time. Every year Sumlin manages to keep his job is a year longer it would take to rebuild or build a winner with a new coach. Even if this year Sumlin implodes and goes 5-7 or 6-6 or something and gets fired, this year was still a wasted year. Nobody would like to be wrong about Sumlin more than me but by all accounts he has proven to be simply average.

Don't be obtuse.

Mazzone wasn't going to play the visit game. Why should he?

This lends credibility that Morehead's tweet was not directed at Tate. He was spazzing out over his WR not wanting to come here if Tate didn't.

Tate decommits, then Nealy (sp) calls Morehead to say he is leaving too. Morehead get's bent and then tweets stupidity. WR responds to Morehead in kind.

So yeah, the Morehead event is a bad look for the program but not Mazzone ignoring "all my visits when committed" boy. At some point, you have to let the kid and family know that there are decisions the program has to make too. There are targets that would like a spot on the roster and would be happy if another QB was signed to befriend and compete with.

During the recruiting process, if we can't handle involved parents, A&M is in for some trouble.

Every coach outside the pros will tell you their job is to handle parents---and it's going to be a lot easier to shake hands and talk a little bit with a parent than to convince the parents of the world to not be involved in their child's recruiting process.

As fans, we never got much clarity on what actually happened with Murray...to continue to broadly paint kids and their parents as Murrayish...it's not fair.

Either way, this doesn't mesh with Moorehead losing his **** over Martel...I know we won't hear Mazzone's side of the story...but did we want Martel? Or did we not?

The "denial tweet" by Moorehead also includes him saying you can apply the tweet to what we were thinking it was about.

I'm not totally buying it...I don't know if the first tweet was aimed at Martel or not but I still think Moorehead was pissed about Martel decommiting.

Some of these self-righteous high school stars think they deserve something above and beyond a scholarship that would get the school in trouble with the NCAA. This guy just wanted a handshake and not be treated like a stranger. Is that too ******* much to handle Mazzone?

Rosen is tall, but otherwise a super skinny white boy.

Look, if we didn't want Tate Martel than tell the kid sorry, not tall enough...why play this cold shoulder game for weeks?

Didn't know that the simple courtesy of saying hello to someone, and acknowledging their existence was considered "playing the visit game."

there are other QB prospects that Mazzone likes better.

plus both he and we have seem what happens to small QB's in the SEC

Mazzone probably should have ended it with Martel then, playing the cold shoulder game isn't the best way to handle that. That's for sure.

I'm sure someone at A&M was talking to the Martels, was letting them in to practice, etc.

That Mazzone let that go on for weeks just isn't the right way to handle it.

So Morehead was saying the tweet was not directed at Tate but could see how folks could take it that way. Or, it was directed at both? Morehead acted as an epic bonehead regardless.

These kids and their families have to understand. Coaches jobs are on the line every year. Who wants to deal with a QB you didn't even recruit that flip flops at the first sign of adversity.

Maybe Mazzone just doesn't play games at all. It sounds like there is more to the story. Were Tate and family complaining about A&M offering other QBs in the class? I have a hard time believing that a coach with as much experience as Mazzone would ignore a QBs parent for no reason at all like papa Martell makes it sound. If the Martells had conditions, I could see an OC being that put off.

Got it.

No entitlement there.

The Mazz saved us a ton of drama by ignoring Tate. I wish the young man the best (until the possibility he plays us). There is nothing wrong with The Mazz wanting a different style of QB for the offense. At the same time, there nothing wrong with Tate wanting to go where he is a better fit. It's that simple and we should move on. Stop bashing Tate or any other recruit that de-commits from us, better yet: stop following recruiting.

Without knowing now, or likely ever, Mazzone's side of the story, it's good to see you are making full use of your jump to conclusions mat.
