There is a delay in naming Steve Spurrier as the new OC. But, other than that, everything is still a go. My friends in low places do not know the reason for the delay -- only that it is a delay, and Spurrier will be announced in a timely manner.

No opinion of whether or not this rumor has validity, but don't you think it would be badass for Spurrier to come here for two years and win a NC, then retire?

I do.

Sounds too good to be true.

Like hiring chief last year as DC. Thought that was bs too

But it would be a great hire.

Not sure why everyone is excited for a 70 year old OC, spurrier needs to retire. Spurrier hasn't done anything since he was at Florida. Sumlin will be gone next year when we win 8 games again.
As recently as 2013, he finished 11-2 at South Carolina and was ranked #4 in the nation in both the coaches' and Ap poll. When is the last time Sumlin did that?

In 2011, 2012, and 2013, Spurrier had a three year run that was as good as anyone in the nation. His SC team lost a total of 6 games in those 3 seasons and finished the year in the top 10 of all polls each of those years.

He had a regression last year and this year that coincided with Clemson's surge. I just don't think he could keep up with recruiting the same geography as Clemson and against SEC opponents, too.

This narrative that Spurrier hasn't done anything since Florida is complete bull****, and I'm tired of hearing it. Whether Rojo is a big troll or not (probably is), repeating lies about Spurrier is completely unwarranted.

This is my own personal opinion: I think the delay is that no one wants Spavital, that Spavital isn't open to a demotion back to QB coach even though it includes the opportunity to be mentored by two of the greatest OC minds (Sumlin and Spurrier), and that Sumlin is giving him more time to find a place to roost.

Fire the idiot then! and don't tell me Spurrier/Sumlin combo can't out recruit Spav. My dog has more promise at OC than Spav.

If it is Spurrier, he would be doing it to help his son, who he would bring with him. Similar to Lou and Skip Holtz at SC years ago.

Why will someone resign a HC job and become an OC?
First, I think this whole "Spurrier to A&M as OC" is laughable, but I see a reason why somebody like him would entertain the idea of being a coordinator over a HC. He has nothing left to prove as a HC. He's coached a Heisman winner, won a NC game, and made USCe a somewhat respectable program.

Given his age, maybe he's tired of the stress and everything that comes from being a HC? The media always on your back, being responsible for the actions of hundreds of people (kids), trying to constantly sell your program to recruits and the media, etc. I'm sure it grows tiring after a while. But like many others, he knows if he just goes home and sits, he'll whither away. Being an OC takes away a lot of the stress and responsibilities of the HC, but allows him to be involved and out doing something. Hell, my FIL was a VP at one of the major railroads, and once he hit his 30 years, he chunked the deuce and went into a manager role for a RR services company. He got tired of the stress, hours, and travel. Not a HC type thing, but the premise is still the same.
I have a relative who coached high school football for years in Texas and California, mostly as a head coach. After being a head coach for years and taking his team to the state championship game 6 times (they lost all 6) he stepped down to become a principal.

But he later decided he missed coaching so much, he became an assistant coach, and was part of a team that won a state championship.

How do you know it would NEVER happen? Sumlin and Spurrier are close friends and he has ties to Hyman. I'm not saying it's a dead lock but to not even think of it as a dark horse idea is foolish. At this time last year if someone told you we were getting the Chief you would have had the exact same response. Sumlin has a magic that can't be explained with reasoning.

Cool, what kind of odds you want to give me here?

100 to 1? 1000 to 1?

Because it's not going to happen.

Still have a hard time getting my head around this move. But, can you imagine the publicity and attention that would flood our program if it is Spurrier? We have to win, absolutely, but Spurrier as the OC with Chief as DC, Summy on the sidelines and all that goes with the SEC regular season makes for a media deluge on Aggieland not seen since the JFF days. Used smartly, that level of attention is a strategic advantage for a program looking to recruit aggressively and solidify position. Maybe that's a big part of the play here.

Sumlin did that and finished #5 in 2012.

Go watch the SEC East play football. Sumlin could've won the East the last 4 years with Snyder as our DC. 11-2 is not our goal, getting in the conference championship for once is.

The SEC East has not been very good the last 3 years, no matter how you try to spin it. Spurrier has not had a good offense in 2 seasons.

My concern is that, even if true, Spurrier can't fix the OL, and that's where a lot of the problems lie. If Sumlin were to pull this off, he better have a lot of faith in Christensen, because we had a lot of the same technique issues this year that we did last year.

To me, the pieces do add up, so I will continue to believe for now.

1. Snyder was fired right after the season because he's a veteran and Sumlin knew he'd land on his feet. BJ Anderson, who didn't have the resume or experience that Snyder had, was allowed to stay on until Beatty did us a solid and offered him a gig. Sumlin wants to do right by his assistants, even when it's time for them to move on and he's given Spav to find a new gig but nobody is offering. Yet.

2. Spurrier stated his desire to continue coaching and with him being friends with Sumlin, being attracted to our OC job due to the talent we have on campus, good golfing weather, and the opportunity to chase one more national title because he wasn't ever going to get the talent needed after Shaw and Clowney left, that all adds up in my head. Spurrier sees his ability to coach offense and Chavis's defensive prowess and Sumlin's recruiting abilities and he's confident enough to think he can win.

3. I'm good friends with a coach who expresses a similar sentiment in that they'd rather be the OC for a good team and win than be the head coach for a bad team and lose.

4. Spurrier is a high energy guy. He's not going to retire and go sit at the house. He's either going to do TV or keep coaching somewhere and with his competitive fire, I won't be surprised if he picks continuing to coach.

5. Tom Moore is older than Spurrier and he's doing great things with the Arizona Cardinals as their assistant head coach and offensive advisor.

Hoping Christensen is gone too. The Oline made absolutely zero progress this year. Hell, it might have even regressed. Better plays/playcalling will only work if there's an Oline to facilitate it.
