I grew up in another state so I don't have much knowledge of Texas but just the generic stuff. We just moved back to Texas and it's history has really piqued my interest.

What books would y'all recommend to read on the History of Tejas? I've looked only and found a few recs but figured I'd ask here and see what's worth while and what isn't.

TIA

Lots of answers and options to choose from here.

"Lone Star, A History Of Texas And The Texans" by T.R. Fehrenbach is the correct answer. Written in 1968, it. Is comprehensive some may consider it dated. Stephen Harrigan's myth-busting 'Big Wonderful Thing' attempts to be a more modern version, but I found it lacking and occasionally too woke. Empire of the Summer Moon by SC Gwynne Is a great story, but not comprehensively enough to stand alone as a history of Texas. I'd also add Frederick Law Olmsted's A Journey through Texas as an interesting story, but not a complete history of Texas.

I am sure there are others.

James Michener, Texas. It's a novel but you wouldn't know it by reading it.
Spanning four and a half centuries, James A. Michener's monumental saga chronicles the epic history of Texas, from its Spanish roots in the age of the conquistadors to its current reputation as one of America's most affluent, diverse, and provocative states. Among his finely drawn cast of characters, emotional and political alliances are made and broken, as the loyalties established over the course of each turbulent age inevitably collapse under the weight of wealth and industry. With Michener as our guide, Texas is a tale of patriotism and statesmanship, growth and development, violence and betrayala stunning achievement by a literary master.

Or try Big Wonderful Thing by Stephen Harrigan. Way more current.

This is a version of a small comic book that's been published in one form or another since the 20's
Notoriously lacking in politically correct story lines in the earlier versions but still a great outline to discover some of the Texas themes and myths

"Texas History Movies" I grew up with a 50's version on our bookshelves
I still "see" the pictures when reading or thinking of Texas stories

More and other versions on eBay and even a couple on Amazon
