I thought the Apple news was interesting in terms of competing with Peloton and other fitness apps....

Link to Article

I wonder how folks would feel if Apple went balls to the wall and put out a line of fitness products with seemless integration to Apple Watch, Apple TV, iPad, etc....

That article would lead you to believe Peloton is here to stay and the investors think so too....

I was looking at every option and ended up with the Peloton because I figured the amount of people devoted to the platform meant that it had a better chance of staying around, compared to a company trying to undercut Pelton that might flop out of the business, or a company like Norditrac that could shut down the biking angle if they don't succeed in pulling market share.

There's a really great podcast series called "How I Built This" that gets the stories from different entrepreneurs. The founder of Peloton was on there. He said at the beginning he was selling out of malls, and everybody asked what was going to happen when they went out of business. He said he had to come with an answer, so he figured out the answer that worked for those people was something to the effect of "when Peloton goes out of business the bankruptcy courts will sell off the course catalogue to somebody and it cost almost nothing to host those on AWS or something, so there will always be rides to subscribe to."

I can't see Apple developing physical bikes/treads/rower hardware in house. It seems like if they wanted in the space they would buy a company like Peloton/Mirror/Echelon/Sunny and then integrate it into their ecosystem. Peloton would probably be the most expensive one though.

Can you an imagine the cost of an Apple developed Peloton? I bet it would be $5k easily.

If they did buy Peloton, would they completely revamp the hardware which is currently Android based?

I'd probably pay a few dollars to see an Apple-esque reveal of their Peloton. Tim Cook doing some Tabata with Jess King. It'd be magic!

Peleton vs Wahoo...

thoughts?
Honestly, if all you want is a bike that you can hop on indoors and do prestructured workouts as part of a training plan for an event, a Wahoo and zwift will do fine and be a lot cheaper. If you want to race against others doing digital doping, get a Wahoo and zwift. But if you want a wide variety of workouts on and off the bike, a large community of folks to ride and challenge yourself with, and like the motivation of having an instructor giving you cues, peloton really can't be beat and it is worth the extra money.
see...that wasn't hard

thanks!

honestly, i'd much rather have the wahoo + zwift. But the wife would never use it, b/c she wouldn't go through the trouble of setting it up. I'll ride outside 10 times out of time, if i'm able, so I sometimes use the peloton. We got the peloton for her, and she loves it. I have way more flexibility in my schedule than she does. I have enjoyed using the app for things like yoga, and i don't mind the peloton, but its not my preference.

addressing a couple thing in the above quote:

"a large community of folks to ride and challenge yourself with,"

peloton has about 1.4 million users vs zwift with 1.1 million.

"If you want to race against others doing digital doping"

there are 1000% people digital doping on peloton too.

i'd rather race than have an instructor telling me what to do and telling stupid jokes while they sing to their favorite songs.

All of that said, the peloton is a solid platform, and i like it. Different strokes for different folks when it comes to Peloton vs Wahoo (+Zwift). They are both on a bike, but almost apples to oranges when you really break it down.

I agree with almost all of what was said. I would ride outdoors nearly every time if I had the choice, but it seems to be getting harder and harder to find the time to do so. My point was to compare the indoor options presented. Regarding the "digital doping", my point was that peloton is the wrong place to go if you want to race or compete, mainly because it isn't set up for that. However, realize that because Zwift racing is based on watts/Kg, anybody who wants to fudge their weight can beat somebody who isn't. On the peloton, the leaderboard is there, and yes, the calibrations can vary somewhat widely from bike to bike, but the main purpose isn't to race against others, and there isn't a setting I can easily adjust to put myself atop the leaderboard. So it really doesn't matter if you are just measuring progress against yourself.

I guess the bottom line for me is that zwift is more limited than peloton. If you just want to race or just want to do your own structured workout with your own intervals and your own playlist, zwift is the far better choice, but that is really all you can do on zwift. The peloton and the digital app offer a much wider range of possible workouts.

don't disagree with any of that. We are on the same page.

Again, outside of the bike i think it is apples to oranges. If you want the bike (and app) for general fitness, i think the peloton is a clear winner. But if you are looking for a training tool for racing bikes (tri, road, etc), where you need to work with a coach, do some virtual racing, and have structured workouts, the peloton is absolutely the wrong platform.

You can use either platform for either type of application, but there is clearly a winner for each use case. It comes down to what you want and need to get out of the "bike."

I got assigned to "TheDenominators." First time doing one of these PZP challenges so I'm just trying to see how it goes.. 4 rides a week, IIRC. Been doing the Summer 2020 mini-challenge to kinda ramp myself back up to riding more frequently after so much time off.

Which team you in? I actually special requested to be on your team, but I have no idea how all this works haha.

I am in. On 3-81 think we are zoom school of spin or something lame like that. Team voted for fast times at spin school high, but for whatever reason we didnt use it.

Going to miss the first week while we are in colorado on vacation. But will try to at least make up a few classes when we get back.

Yeah I did a new FTP test at the end of July (my previous one was in April). Increased my FTP from 289 to 295 (wasn't expecting that tbh), but the past 3 weeks with new zones have taken some getting used to. Had gotten used to the old zones I guess. Finally starting to feel like these new zones are good for me but it took some time.

I took one a couple of weeks back expecting a decent increase. Overall increase of 4 pelotons or whatever they are called. I was a bit disappointed in that, so I might try again this weekend. I did get my power/weight ratio to 3.00.

Nice! Yeah I've only done two FTP tests so far, so I didn't know if I should have any expectations. Probably g2b awhile before I attempt another. Need to take a look at my power to weight ratio. No idea where mine is at, but almost certainly lower than where it needs to be lol.
