What is a good length short for the casual runner?

I am 5'11" wear a 34" pant. I'd rather the shorts be a little too long than short. Is 7" inseam what i'm looking for?

I'm 6'2" and I wear a 7" instead most of the time. They hit me about 3" above the knee.

This is entirely personal preference though. No length is better than the other.

Yup all personal preference, I prefer 5" and I am 6'1"

Technically, anything over 5" are basketball shorts.

7" is fine. You'll be comfortable without showing too much skin.

I'm 6'4" and 7" works for me. I wouldn't have a problem going shorter, though.

My shorts are getting shorter the older I get

You're also still getting faster, so that probably balances it out to an extent.

Mine are getting longer as I'm getting older and slower. Plus during the summers when I ride more I hate showing massive tan lines from my bike shorts.

Bottom line: run in whatever makes you most comfortable. You may find you like short inseams during the summer or in races, but longer inseams during the cooler months and on longer/easier runs.

At 6'3" my running shorts are quite short, ie. the racing kind. Looks extra special with a cyclist tanline.

I thought running shorts inseams were measured by the quarter inch and never longer than an inch.
