I swear I have seen this topic posted, but search was not my friend this morning.

Need to/want to extend the warranty on our college kid's car before it expires. AI had a few suggestions. Wondered if we have an Aggie source that is really good for us?

I feel like there's some one here but also forgot. Alot of people use Knapp or at least reference it. I had my dealer add it later.

Can you buy a warranty on just about anything? I may be purchasing a used GM product in the coming days and might want to explore a warranty for peace of mind in the coming weeks/months. I've never had anything other than a factory warranty.

We purchased it used last year for the kid. Knew we would purchase the extended manufacturer warranty later.

Knapp came up on my AI search and I have spoken with them. Pretty straight forward. Sent me a quote with no hassle. Found out by talking to them that you do have to get this completed at least 30 days before the 3 year point of in service and a certain amount of miles. Something to keep in mind when waiting.

Tried another source recommended out of MT They responded with pages and pages of info but no actual quote. Less helpful.

Also called Ewing GMC/Buick here locally and their prices were about the same. about a hundred more on the platinum 72/72k with $100 deductible and a hundred less on the Platinum 72/72k with no deductible.

I guess you can pretty much call any GM dealership. The Knapp guy said they have developed a volume model and got special pricing. The quote from Ewing brings up questions about that. Also the difference between 100 deductible and zero deductible is only about $400.

Now that I have two quotes, one from a supposed known low price provider, that are in the same ballpark, I will probably just use Ewing. I want the no deductible one because we will "give" the car to the kid upon graduation and want to set her up as well as possible.

I might be misunderstanding, but they make it sound like the extension starts the day you purchase it. So if you purchased when you bought new, you would get a 72 month / 72k warranty. If you wait to where we are with three years from in service being October 15th and the car having 25k miles, we end up starting from this point for an effective length of 8.5 years and 97k miles.

No idea what pricing difference may be. But seems weird to me that it is set up that way and not simply an extension on the 3/36k. base warranty.

I found a good source through ai research. Knapp Chevrolet in Michigan. I happened to work with Scott.

Their initial quote was not the best, but when I gave feedback that they were the highest of the three quotes I got they came back a thousand less for the top plan.

Pretty easy process.

I may be flat wrong, hopefully someone with specific knowledge of the GM warranty products responds, but I do not believe the 72 months / 72k miles starts now, giving you the 8.5 yrs / 97k miles you referenced. My understanding has always been that the original warranty in-service date and miles is the starting point for the 72/72 - I highly advise researching that because it sounds like they our selling you some BS or are confused themselves.

They stressed to me, multiple sources, the opposite. That it was better to wait. That it started when purchased, supplanting the original warranty.

So in my case, 2023 pre owned with 25k miles when purchase last week. The warranty is for 72 months from now and a total of 97k miles.

Sounds like you have done your research. I'd make sure that is what the contract says in writing. I haven't bought an extended warranty in a very long time, but did on some early '90s GM products and they did not work like you described. In fact the financial incentive to not buying them when you purchased the car was to wait and see if you got a lemon or not, and so that you weren't paying interest on it with it rolled into the car note. If the car was well put together without a lot of stuff going wrong at 35k miles you skipped the extended warranty and took your chances. But I never had anyone tell me buying at 35k miles gave me extra time / miles added on as an incentive to postpone buying until then. If that is how they work now perhaps I'll consider one in the future if I ever buy a car that new again.

What I learned from extended warranties, was make sure you have the manufacturer extended warranty and not some 3rd party BS one that will require the 3rd party warranty approval d!ckhead to visit the dealer and approve all repairs.

When. I have shopped them and not bought them more recently most of the dealers would send you the actual contract not just the brochure if you asked them 2-3 times, so you could see what was covered, what was not covered, and what the maintenance requirements were - some really make it hard for a DIY mechanic / oil change guy like meyself.

I suggest you ask to see the actual warranty contract to ensure you know exactly what you are buying.

I have an executed contract in hand that says what I described for the 72/72k 0 deductible extended gm warranty. That was the longest term offered.
