I agree, the TTL is very confusing but I already was aware with some online search.
have you lived in the same state your entire life and only purchased a vehicle from a large dealer?

Granted, a merc will be more because of the quantity and synthetic oils, but not $550 more.
Good To know that there are cheaper options but man, every time I did anything at Firestone it was a pain. Jiffy is in and out for the most part.

Stealerships is a reason why I hate buying a car because many feel like they have to go to them to get maintenance done correctly or keep their warranty. That is how they make their money, and its not by selling the cars.

My X5 was $200 7 years ago in Austin and I am sure its higher now.

I just did an online search and it ranges from $150 to $400. I hate dealerships and never take my cars to them unless under warranty.

Always buy cars new so always from dealership.

Beater from parents through Med school/residency. New since, so never took Title to DMV.

That hasn't been true for a long time. The Federal Gov. passed a law saying they could not do this. As long as you have proof you did maintenance (receipts, etc.) they cannot deny a warranty claim for instance that you did not change the oil with the dealer.

I know that but there are many who don't. I never take to dealerships out of warranty.

Not sure what you mean, but you do not have to take your car to a dealer to keep the warranty for regular maintenance items. You just need to document it was done.

I went with a friend to take delivery of his new Model 3 last fall. Same experience.

Texas doesn't allow manufacturers to sell direct to consumers, which is why the buyer has to handle TTL separately.

Tesla charged me for TTL & processed the title transfer on the MYP I bought 2 months ago in Texas.

Weird, because my friend was forced to pay it separately. Maybe he misconstrued what it was. Guess I'm wrong!

I financed through Tesla so maybe it's different if you pay cash or finance through another bank.

When I bought May of 23 I financed through the App with TD Auto Finance and I had to pay TTL at the title office.

After Googling it appears this was changed in the last couple of months. Just asked another friend about it and he also had to pay tax at registration rather than at purchase and had to register the vehicle himself. They bought in May and July of last year, but a thread on a Tesla owners club says that it was changed by at least November.

Good to know. I'm planning on buying one when they do the refresh on the Model Y, probably early next year.

Tesla Can't sell a car directly in Texas and I don't think this is changing unless the laws has changed.

The MY I bought in were both new in 2020 and 2023 which both required me to pay TTL at the DMV after purchase.

used may be a different deal.
