In the market for new tires and looking at these two options. Prices are comparable so it really comes down to who is easier to schedule balance/rotation and who has the better road hazard warranty.
I've bought from Firestone the past few times, mainly due to location convenience but no Firestone, at least of the tire variety, around here.

My wife just got 4 new tires on her Expedition for $400 from Discount because they honored the road hazard warranty. We knew of two damaged, but they noticed a nail in a third tire and replaced that one too.

Now to figure out where the hell she's been driving….

Definitely go Discount. I work in construction and because of driving around construction sites all the time I get a lot of tire punctures. Usually nails and screws. Discount always patches or replaces the tire with no hassle.

Discount has the best ability to schedule service. I got my tires rotated and balanced this morning. I had my pick of 4 DT stores on my way to work this morning, they were rotated before the single Costco on my way to work opens.

And a complete inability to stay on schedule.

I've bought my last 3 sets from Costco, but only when they have the frequent $150 off 4 promo for Michelin. We didn't have a DT in my area but finally do, but Costco still had the better deal for my set. I've been happy with their service. I have staggered wheels so I don't rotate...YMMV.

I loved DT when I was in TX.

Costco will cost more. Every time you get a rotation you will spend $200+

I've noticed Discount is much better mid week for staying on schedule in my area. Being closed Sunday, Monday is usually a cluster and so are Friday and Saturday with people going in on their off days. I also try to schedule late morning or early afternoon and usually get out within 45 minutes during those times/ days.

True as a walk in. At least around here scheduled appointments online tend to work out alright.

I've typically done first appointment on Saturday and our local place gets right to you.

No joke. Mrs. Went yesterday for a rotation and it cost closer to $350.

I've always loved DT, but I don't think Costco charges for their Road Hazard.
Alternate back and forth and as long as you stay in DTs system they still fix all your flats.

Take a printout of the Costco's total price estimate to Discount Tire and ask them to match or beat it.

Took my new truck in for a tire rotation last week to Discount, and they wanted to charge me. I've always taken my vehicles there and never been charged for a rotation, including on new vehicles.

I've never had an issue getting DT to comp the tire certificates when I bring in a lower quote from elsewhere (usually TireRack) that includes them

You can pay something like $25 a tire and then your set is covered at DT and you get all the perks. But why would you get a free balance and rotation when you don't buy there?
That said I have purchased tires from DT almost exclusively but did not a while back and ended up with a screw in one tire. DT repaired it free. A few months later it started leaking so I went back and they were going to repair it again. It was taking a long time and next thing you know I have a new tire. They said the first repair was bad and they replaced it. They are the best around. DT on S. HWY6 is so busy all the time now, used to be able to zip in and have stuff done so fast.

Did y'all buy the tires at Costco? If so, it should have been free, correct?

I don't expect it, but it is something that they have done for for 20 years. It is one of the reasons I've remained loyal to them for 20 years.

Guessing they were referring to the typical multi-hundred $ Costco shopping bill accrued while waiting for the tire maintenance to be completed.

Yeah... A few bottles of wine, Legos, new bath towels, a dog bed, a side of salmon etc we didn't need. Because sitting in the food court waiting is too boring.

We used to use costco for tires but I just got sick of the wait/hassle, and the store is always a mad house nowadays so it just wasn't worth it any longer.

Are you sure that you didn't buy the lifetime tire rotation and balance package from them? I know I did that years ago. It was like $60 for my truck. I made good use of it.

I've been happy with both. I like how CostCo puts a rotation/balance 7,500 mile reminder sticker on the windshield and I prefer waiting there over the Discount waiting area, though there's a Discount within walking distance to the house.

I usually grab a couple beers with a friend while the truck is at CostCo and CostCo seems to have good sales from time to time.

Looks like CostCo has $110 off of a set of Firestone and $150 off a set of Bridgestones currently. I just cross-shopped Firestone Destination X/T (CostCo doesn't currently have KO2s) and CostCo out the door is $1,497.92 while Discount is $1,951.44 including the certs ($1,645.44 without).

True. CostCo's installation includes road hazard where they prorate by mileage, does Discount include that if you don't buy the warranty?

Unless you are significantly closer to Costco, as mentioned above, DT will match the Costco price, and the ability to make appointments and customer service rep availability is why I switched to DT.

I'd walk into a Costco to pick up or drop off and there might not be an employee there for 5-10 minutes.

The downfall with Costco has been when I've had flats and can't wait 3 days to get a scheduled appointment. It's taken 2-3 hrs for a flat fix.

Prorated road Hazzard after nearly 70k miles on a Michelin cost me half the price of new tire. At Discount probably would have been the cost of a new CERT instead which I bet would have been $80 cheaper.

Fan of Costco. Not a fan of Costco Tire. Just too hard to get road hazard, tire rotation and warranty support in a timely manner. After the sale just sucks with Costco.

Make enough of a relationship with a Discount Tire Store Manager by doing business with them as a repeat customer, and you'll get taken care of in ways that pay off for you in the long run. Their good managers realize this, and have lots of leeway in making things work for the repeats financially, even taking a loss at points, because of the pure volume the do with the one/two time buyers.

I was a homer of Discount for years but the inconvenience of not being able to schedule a timely appointment, inability get me in and out when scheduling, etc has caused me to go to Tire Rack and have the local installer mount the tire.
