I haven't been to the one in Longview for years - but last time I went it was pretty bad.

I think I've already mentioned this on this thread but Johnny Cace's sucks badly. They are living off their reputation from 20 years ago.

Carter's BBQ is now on my "it sucks" list.

Carter has turned over operations to the crew and it has gone downhill!

I predict they'll be out of business soon unless Carter starts cutting meat again and running the joint.

Dean's in Huntington was closed down for months due to a fire this summer. Recently remodeled & reopened.

Lost in the Fifties on 59 between Nac & Lufkin for a cheeseburger & onion rings.

Not true.
The original ownerns sold it. Don Rafa's now is in the old building. Wooden Nickel is on the other side of the loop, towards Highway 19.

Del Rio's in Lufkin is just average Tex Mex w/ free ice cream to follow. I like it but I won't take my old lady there. She's from South Texas & won't tolerate it. Go to Morale's or La Unica instead.

I 2nd the Bean & Burger in Athens.

Catfish Corner in Gun Barrel City/Seven Points. Ask them to grill you dead fish & shrimp.

Also the Shuck N Peel in Gun Barrel. Cajun food complete w/ bad karoake.

I am a Papasita's lover....have been for oh-so-long. I think the chips and hot sauce is probably the best. It isn't great good, nothing like Ninfa's in Houston or El Fenix in Dallas....but it will do in a pinch.

Mercado's in Tyler is really a lot better....good food.

I sat in Dean's to sup on the day it reopened. Almost double the size as before, food just as good! His yeast rolls=dessert.

Vaughn's is the catfish place on Lake Bob Sandlin in Pittsburg - very, very good. Almost as good as the Catfish King on 155 in Ore City (I think - it's between Longview and Lone Star).

I fully agree with Jucy's in Marshall - haven't tried the one in Longview.

Ernest Orleans in Shreveport is great.

I'd like to add Stillwater Inn in Jefferson. Great food - a little pricey, but quite a treat.

I'll second the recommendation for Pat G's BBQ and those driving directions are spot on - we have a deer camp 5 minutes from there and get Pat's BBQ often. The only thing they don't have the BEST of is ribs - which is 10 minutes from Pat G's at the Country Tavern.

CT is as good as ever and much cleaner (less smoky) than it used to be - if you like pecan pie, try CT's pecan cobbler (I'd never heard of pecan cobbler until CT started making it). It is one of the best desserts I've had and makes pecan pie look bad!

Bruno's Pizza in Tyler is the only restaurant in East Texas that sticks out in my mind after spending most of my life there. The pizza is the best!!!

Fuglers Feed Trough by lake Murvaul out west of Carthage. Best fried shrimp I've eaten. Huge burgers w/ great quality meat. The shrimp are too good to make me try anything else. I hear the rest is great as well.

Must Miss: Jalepeno Tree.

I think I was in Carthage and the people there were wild about this place. I can honestly say it's the worst food I've ever eaten in my life. I grew up in S Texas, so I'm kind of picky about Mexican Food. MY boss is from Mississippi and when he said it was the worst stuff he'd tried, I knew it was bad...

Daddy Sams in Carthage have the best ribs. You can find better brisket but the ribs are the best !

Mercados doesn't hold a candle to El Charro and El Lugar. Sorry people, if you think Mercados is the best mexican in Tyler then you: haven't eaten their since the mid 90's or haven't been to either of the previously mentioned restaurants.

Cdub06 - Jalapeno Tree is the 3th best mexican food in Carthage (last place). It probably is the cleanest however.

3th place - When you suck so bad you are almost in 4th out of 3.

Don Juan's on the Square in Tyler is outstanding Mexican food (more authentic than TexMex) and very reasonably priced. 2 can eat a big lunch there for about $12.

Pappacitas is not good, if you want good mexican food in Longview go to carlitos, el sombrero, tele's, or posados.

Juicy's hamburgers is also outstanding, it will be one of the best burgers you ever eat.

For you guys ragging on Jalapeno Tree: in general, I agree.

However, I tried their beef fajitas and they were really very good!

JT is the suck. why on earth would tyler need one of those nasty ass restaurants when they have 300 better mexican food joints already

Went to visit the family in Lindale and went to Country Tavern. It's still overrated.
