Carter's BBQ in Longview. Better than Bodacious in my opinion. They fill you up!

Try the Boudin!

Gotta agree with The Lucky Charm and Daddy Sam's in Carthage. Also:

Shogun's
The Conquistador place in Bullard (second best chips and hot sauce, Papacitas is first)

I'm going to say this again but Papacita's only gets recommended much of the time because of the building it's in. The neck crowd gets so overwhelmed by eating in a two story restaurant with separate upstairs bars that they think the food equates to the building.

Gonzales, Posado's and Carlito's are all better. Agree with the others but note that the Bodacious are franchised and the food is different at various locations.

Dudley's is probably in the top 3 Cajun restaurants in Texas.

Papacitas isn't that good...but the chips/hot sauce/tortillas are excellent.

The Conquistador(sp?) is owned by a former El Charros #2 waiter. Angel opened it years ago and if you've noticed the hot sauce is a bit like El Charros'.

Best places in Tyler:

Stanleys BBQ
Don Juans (wednesday's = dollar tacos)
El Charros (Both)
Bruno's Pizza
Pico de Gallo (on the Spur and 31)
Joe's Italian Grill

Also try Pat G's BBQ on the outskirts of Tyler - it's out in the sticks.
Go there if you want a real BBQ "experience".
From Tyler take Hwy 31E (about 5-6 miles) then you will see a sign to Starville - take a right on that road then at your first intersection take a right and it will be on the right (picture shack with smoke coming out of it). Or, once you get to the Starville sign, roll your window down and let your nose guide you. Pat died a few years back but his son still runs the place. They serve until the food is gone. Your SOL if you want any type of green veggie or salad. Grab some buddies and a bunch a cold beer and head out.
Great stuff.

Lufkin:
BBQ: Lufkin Bar-B-Q, Best fried rolls in Texas
Pitt stop BBQ, Chuck is the greatest
Hamburger: Ray's drive in, Ray's Special
Mom's Diner, Mom's monster burger
Steak: Pete's Place on 69S in Homer
Brazos Cattle Company
Mexican: Morales Cafe, either location
La Unica on N. Reguet
Cafe Del Rio
Seafood: None

Breakfast: Lone Star Charlie's

All around best food for the money in Angelina County: Huntington Meat Market & Deli. You can pick the steak and they will cook for $2. Catfish and daily steam table. Parking can get crazy but worth the trip down 69 from lufkin.

Big Pines Lodge is very good.

Duke's there in Lakeport is also very good. All you can eat catfish and its cooked just right for me. I wish they would give you a little more of the "fixins" but overall I try to make it back there everytime I go home. Good food.

Macks -

Papacitas is the most OVERRATED place in Longview. My friends from A&M told me over and over how great it was for over a year... when I finally went there, it did not live up to the hype... whatsoever at all.

stud--

To be honest I think the reason most people hype it up is simply for the fact that as a student in high school I and my friends used to go up there and eat chips/salsa/tortillas all the time. I mean we could eat on that for a long time and get away with not even getting a meal. Anyway, to me that's why I think it's so good, but the food is just good, not great.

I think that is the deal with that place, lots of good memories for people. My folks moved out to Longview a few years ago, and I have had no less than 20 people tell me about friggin Papacitas when I tell them my folks moved out there...

agreed...Papacitas wasn't even decent...It was terrible. I should have known better than to try Mexican food north of I-10 though...
