Greater Lubbock area is over 300,000 people. I actually think Tech campus is a much better laid out campus than our own. Taos is under six hours. Wolf Creek Pass, CO in under 8 hours. Palo Duro and and the high plains are beautiful. You get to live 300, 375, and 500 miles away from people that think Dallas, Austin, and Houston are great places to live.

Plenty to like about Lubbock.

I hate the weather from mid Feb to until May. Other than that, not so bad!

Basketball just takes a few players... you can build a program anywhere if you are a good coach and a good recruiter.

Beard is super. A lot like BCG but as far as I know, without the baggage. They play outstanding defense, among the best in the country.

Depending on their draw in the tourney, I look for Tech to be in the Final 4.

And I would absoltely make a run at their coach, but he's a West Texas guy and I think this is his dream job. He may be at Tech for life.

Tech has a good team and a good coach, who I am sure tu will try to hire away after they fire Boom-shaka-shaka. Getting back to us, though - let's find the next Billy Gillespie and keep him around a lot of years this time.

Lived in Plainvie about three years. Used to go back there for business. Lubbock is flat and dusty. No rives or trees. Grocery stores had tornado tips on your paper bag - that's how long ago it was. Will take BCS any day over Lubbock. Someone post a picture or two of Lubbock in a dust storm.

They have given a good account of themselves in T&F too. For certain their coach isn't better than ours. Facilities?????/ It ain't even close, ours (now) are the finest in the land.

Does an 8-hour drive to Colorado count as a plus? I can get there in half that time driving to IAH from CS and taking a flight to Colorado.

You can't get from your driveway in C/S to any ski slope in Colorado in 4 hours

1.5 hours to Bush
1 hour park/security/bags
2.5 hour flight to Denver
.5 to get bags and car
1.5 hours to ski resort

And that is BEST case scenario

Lubbock to Ruidoso is a 4 hour drive
To Santa Fe ... 5
To Red River ... 6
To Taos ... 6
To Wolf Creek, Colo. Ski ... 7.5
To Durango, Colo. ski .... 8

And that's in a car, driveway to driveway, no flight hassle

I slept on someone's couch for a few hours in Lubbock once, about 18 years ago, on the way to Colorado to ski. We left CS at around midnight, arrived at friend of friend's house in Lubbock close to dawn, slept a few hours, then finished the journey and hit the slopes. Lubbock got the job done for me. No complaints. ...but that is the only time I've ever been there and in my estimation, the one of the only things it's good for.

Have you seen the area where the Circle Drive-in, Skaggs and married student housing used to be lately? It's not your dad's University Drive any more.

Sure I've seen it... it's much better than it was

The Overton area is a whole different ballgame

Basically, a single family (McDougals) bought several square miles of city, razed it to the ground, and rebuilt for student housing, retail, tourist, and culinary

It is really nice

Byrne made a bad hire in basketball when Turgeon left.

Byrne made a bad hire in baseball when he fired Mark Johnson.

My daughter just graduated from tech in December... we lived in Midland for 7 years and they got to her during the Leach era. Regardless, I've spent quite a bit of time up there over the past 4 years... the TX Country scene is good but the city itself is a **** hole. Crime is way up there... the area around campus looks like a third world country. There is one decent hotel. It was almost impossible to find anywhere to have a graduation dinner... thank the Lord I fly because I couldn't imagine driving or flying commercial.

As far as good fan support... go see for yourself. They leave for parking lot at half time and don't come back.

Southern Colorado has some of the best snow in all the Rockies. From IAH it will take you about 8 hours by plane + car to get to Wolf Creek Pass unless your flying in a private jet.

But since you went there. From Lubbock you can arrive at Denver airport at 6:50am(local) in the morning and be parked at the base of a ski slope before the first lift starts up. And you can roll out of bed in Lubbock about 50 minutes before the flight takes off and still get in your airplane seat without being out of breath. You can ski until 6pm and easily be back at the Denver airport to catch a flight back and be back inside your house in Lubbock asleep by 11:30pm the same day.

Speaking of Lubbock, Denver, and Aggie Baseball. We don't have a single player on the roster from the pan handle or Colorado. But we do have Coach McMillan, who graduated from Tech.

I hate to break it to y'all but B/CS, as much as all of us love it, doesn't allow us much ability to cast stones at Lubbock
uh... have you tried driving from Lubbock to anywhere else? 8 hours later you are still in the middle of no where.

You can get to Austin and Houston from B/CS within 2 hours.
You need a better car.

Lubbock is 6 hours from DFW, about the same to El Paso and San Antonio, 7 to Austin.

Other than proximity to metro areas, the only advantage B/CS has over Lubbock is the scenery and the level of the university in the town. TAMU has the history and traditions that Tceh doesn't have yet, but the fan support is getting stronger all the time (winning helps, obviously).

The area around campus to the south is one of the high-income areas, and the new developments to the east of the stadium are a VAST improvement from the "third world country" you describe. And point me to a town that doesn't have crime or an "other side of the tracks" area? I know B/CS has it's share of lower-income areas.

There are MANY good hotels, and more going up all the time.

As for fan support, when's the last time we had 14,000+ for a men's bball game?

I'm just saying that it is a stretch to say that it is a plus to live in Lubbock because you are an 8- hour drive to a Colorado ski slope.

BTW, isn't there a direct flight from Dallas to Durango?

It's a plus to live in Lubbock because you are a 6 hour drive to very giood skiing, and 4 hours away from decent skiing depending on snowfall.... this year has been VERY good for southern New Mexico

4 hours away from good mountain hiking, 6 from REALLY good hiking and backpacking

And again we are talking driving vs flying

Four people in a car travel and a fraction of the cost, and much less hassle, then four people on a plane

Whether that is a plus or not, depends on if you are into those types of activities. If you are, then it is a plus

Can't answer basketball side, but they hired alum Tim Tadlock who just so happens to be one of the best college baseball minds in America.

I had a D1 Head Coach tell me one time, "Any coach that wins a conference championship in Lubbock, Texas, should be the coach of the year."
On the basketball side, Beard coached under Knight and loved his time here. The sips saying tu is his dream job and they'll just pluck him when they fire Shaka is just typical sip delusion.

They hired Beard when Tubby Smith left for Memphis, and use the $$ that Memphis paid in Tubby's buy-out to pay Beard's buyout from UNLV.

Ha, next time I'm there I'd be happy to post pictures. It is true... those apartments around the Overton are complete dumps and not occupied by college students. I think it has a lot to do with the crime in that area.
