I ate at the dinner bell about 2 years ago and it was not what I remembered.

Simos Diner is one of the few remaining "time machines" left in that general area. It's primarily breakfast, and cafeteria style lunch....but one of the days (can't remember which) they do Chicken N Dumplings and I believe you have to call to place an order. They are so good it'll make you feel guilty.

Best breakfast deal in town imo...although we went about a year ago and it was like the bacon had been microwaved. Just a clear step down from what we were accustomed to. Granted, I think this was after a major storm that may have knocked out power so they could have been adapting/improvising. Need to go back to test it out again.

Pre-Covid and gentrification, this place was off the charts in terms of atmosphere. Just filled with black and white old codgers who had been frequenting religiously for decades. The owner's son would walk around anc chop it up with them and break their balls and vice versa.

Dinner Bell got lots of coverage; it had a false alarm closing, then stayed open for a while longer. The final closing may have been less of a bang. Probably fewer Texags posters from that part of town, but it got plenty of local news coverage.

I only pass through that part of town on the way to the cemetery, so never got to stop.

Looks like the Tel-Wink Grill is still going strong over in Gulfgate. That's another oldtimer I haven't made it to yet.

I took a bunch of Canadians to that place and they were really snobby until the food came out and they had real Texas bbq.

Probably location. White people seem to freak out the most over losing classic restaurants and there is a far greater concentration of whiteys in that area...plus a few news stations nearby.

FAR more people in general have heard of Cleburne than Dinner Bell.

I'm still sad about Piccadilly in Almeda Mall

That used to be a primarily blue collar area for decades but changed pretty quickly - the kids of those families are located way past 99 now on all sides so nostalgia can only go so far

Still is and I go at least once a month as I'm often in the area for lunch.

Breakfast is probably better tho...

ETA The thing about that area is you have Tel Wink, Franks Grill, Dot Coffee Shop and Kelly's.

W/ the demographic change, I don't know how they all still survive...
