Have to agree with above post regarding the Generator Supercenter. Never, Never Never do business with them. They will talk a good game and scare you to death about the power system unless you buy their product. Their aftermarket service is bad, you will be waiting weeks if not months for service even under warranty. Briggs, Kohler and Cummings are the way to go for a generator. Generac has had major problems with their units. Lots of cheap Chinese junk parts go into them.

Again, look to cities and states who have effectively implemented these strategies and see what they paid, how long it took, what repairs look like.
I'm curious for this list. What cities and states have done this?

I have no idea. But effective management of the power grid and distribution in a huge city isn't my job, it's the job of the managers and executives running Centerpoint. In my job I DO look to industry peers and competitors to see how I can improve processes, communication and deliverables. Not everything I like in another company can be implemented for mine, but I'm always looking for strategies to improve.

Florida seems to have some effective processes for power loss and mitigation, that seems like a good place to at least start. It's not purely apples to apples but there may be some takeaways that could help.

I just don't accept that Centerpoint is doing the absolute best job any company could possibly do in the same circumstances. And if they are, they should still be always looking to improve their services and reliability.

That's incorrect. Conduits are installed first then the wires are pulled through the conduits from transformer to transformer.

I work for a gas utility and we have to wait for electric to put their conduit in before we run our mains.

Electrical is usually red poly.

I agree with the idea continuous improvement of course.

I just suspect that there's probably not a whole lot that can be realistically done. We need an objective benchmark and it's hard to come by - not many other groups are doing what Centerpoint does, for a comparable city. Maybe I'm a pessimist.

Large-scale outages will happen and not a lot can be done that's financially feasible.

However, there's a lot of anecdotal evidence that Centerpoint has failed miserably in their upkeep and maintenance of the lines and ROW which would have mitigated the number of customers who lost power during Beryl.

Additionally, and I've said this repeatedly, Centerpoint completely and massively failed in their response to Beryl. They failed in the logistics of deploying assets to make timely repairs and they failed to effectively communicate with their customers.

My power has gone out 6 times this year. The most recent was Sunday night for over an hour. Weather was fine by that point. No rain, wind, or anything else that could explain it. Which is typically the situation when it goes out.

And that doesn't count the number of times it blinks or goes out for short periods of time. It was out yesterday during the day for about 3 minutes.

Makes no sense and there is never an explanation from Centerpoint as to what happened, why it keeps repeatedly happening and why it can't be fixed to not happen again.

I get the hurricane. It sucks, but power outages happen in large scale evets like that. The on-going, no information outages make me insane.

Just got it back about 15 minutes ago.

And those random blinks are maddening for sure. It's especially a PITA because it causes the GFCI outlets that are required by code to crap out. I've got a GFCI in the garage that I've got to replace since the hurricane.

Since their Opex didn't increase in an inflationary period, we can assume that they cut costs. Until proven wrong, somebody should be able to calculate out an inflation adjusted Opex budget and reduce any proposed recoveries by that amount.

If their tracker is to be believed, nearly 19k people have had their power restored over the past 24 hours.

That seems excessive for a generally nice time period weather wise.

FWIW, I was upset enough Sunday night to send an email to my state rep. about the on-going power outages at my house, and this morning I got an email response from him saying they had reached out to Centerpoint regarding the situation at my home, requesting a plan for corrective action for the power situation at my home. Further stated that Centerpoint would likely contact me directly, and sure enough I got a call and message from a representative with Centerpoint. Unfortunately I missed the call, but he left his number and I am going to call him back tomorrow morning.

I guess timing in life is everything and it helps that Centerpoint is currently every politician's favorite whipping boy for easy political points.

But whatever it takes!

I was reading somewhere that part of why CenterPoints map failed is they tried to handle the servers in house because they receive guaranteed profit on capex. So instead of a cloud based solution like AWS they were in house and their network couldn't scale for massive outages and it crashed.

Those who lost power...did you at least get a lower energy bill this month? I spent over a week with a broken window (thanks landlord) and ended up at $440 bucks

What? something isn't adding up.

Go to smartmetertexas.com and pull your daily usage information. I assume you know what your electricity contract rate is.

Of course I expect my bill to be lower than usual, due to 4 days of no grid supply to the house.

Quick math based on Google Finances reported market cap

17.85 Billion / $27.93 per share = just under 640 million shares outstanding

So their quarterly dividend costs them just under $128 million???

Looks like for '23, '22 and '21, their annual dividend payments have been 485, 440 and 385 (in millions).
