The histrionics are absolutely insane. 100% carnival knew they could make it barring any major mechanical problems, and those are extreme outliers. They certainly have an entire department monitoring ex and routing ships as necessary, not to mention all of the knowledge on the ship.
eh, I imagine Carnival's command center is quite large. They could easily calculate a route around the hurricane. But it makes for good twitter clicks.

IIRC, the ire directed at the Red Cross was not necessarily their overhead, but during one of the large disaster events a while ago (Harvey maybe?), they were taking donations in the name of that event, but then using the money elsewhere for other things while there were still lots of people in need. Did that for Ike as well in Friendswood. Barely saw a car on the road the next day headed to College Station. I'd ride out Ike again, but I'd be gone for anything bigger.
I can see how that would be frustrating but I also know nothing about how best to deploy donations for emergencies. I really don't remember the details and don't care enough to go dig them up, but I think it was something where they were accepting donations through a bunch of regional affiliates and those affiliates were basically putting the money in their local accounts and hanging on to it for future needs in their area, instead of sending it for use in the disaster that everybody was donating money to help. I kind of recall that they have changed some of their donation capabilities to allow you to earmark it for a specific disaster, and if you don't, they reserve the right to use it as they see fit. A couple of the videos from Hurricane Ian that hit around the same place a couple of years ago were haunting. People that would soon die panicking because the storm surge suddenly appeared and was much, much worse than they thought was even possible.

Plus I don't want to leave my house for too long after the storm in case I need to repair something. Petition to rename the Carnival Liberty to Carnival Leeroy.
My problem is we live in a neighborhood covered in 40+ year old super tall trees. That and the fact that even without power, I'd rather be in my house than stuck on a road somewhere or similar. I have a generator that can run 95% of my house, I'll have plenty of food, guns and ammo.
But if a Cat 3 or bigger is coming along the same path as Beryl - wife and kids are heading to her sister's house and I'll decide what to do at the last minute.
