My BIL has been working for FEMA with Helene and the one that hit Louisiana. They flew him home this morning and are flying him back to Florida on Tuesday.

What's his opinion on FEMA's performance with Helene? We have yet to hear any first hand or second hand info from anyone who knows someone there?
I haven't talked to him at all. He's a paramedic/firefighter. I know he spent most of the last week just kicking in doors to look for bodies/bagging bodies in NC. I know cell service was an issue for him out there. I'm sure I will hear more details at Thanksgiving or something.

FEMA was paying him $1500/day + per diem.

I noticed driving to/ from the game yesterday that it's real dry from Navasota to College Station. Our area of N Houston is dry also.

The problem being is that there is actually people where it is going to hit this time. It is going to be an unmitigated disaster.

All the old timer ranchers on three sides say its not as bad as the drought in the 50's, but I'll have to take their word for it. I am about 85% sure my springs have ceased flowing. Could be drought, could be development in other parts of the county, I don't know. But...yeah...it's brown everywhere.

Right now....I'd go with development over drought.

Central pressure is dropping like a rock. It went from 947 mb to 925 mb in less than 5 hours.

My grandparents' beach house in Punta Gorda took on 3.5' of water during the storm surge from Helene. At least they have not yet had a chance to pour money into a renovation.

It's bathwater in the gulf, and it's coming up on the loop current soon too (fresh hot water supply). It's going to be cat 3 or stronger when it comes ashore.

Unfortunately not bathwater off the coast of Galveston right now. I'm getting beat up.

Damn. Was following on Twitter a couple hours ago when they upgraded it to a Cat4. Had stepped away and was just getting caught up, couldn't believe how fast the pressure continued dropping. That's like 60-70 mb over the last 6 hours

About to be a surfer's paradise in Galveston. Big long period swells coming north off a Cat 5 storm in the southern gulf with an off-shore breeze were the kind to make us skip school...

Swell period predicted for about 50 miles offshore.

I am pretty shocked they are predicting swells that small. I am wondering if that forecast hasn't caught up yet with the strengthening of the storm.

For the sake of Florida, let's hope the predicted windshear happens. Still going to be terrible, but hopefully less wind damage.

I can't imagine being in the path and staying for a cat 3 or larger.

After spending 5-6 hours in the eyewall of Beryl as a strong Cat 1, I'm noping on out if I'm in the crosshairs of any major.

This is my family exactly. Cat 1 eye going over my house was enough for me.

It's summer in the hill country - it's going to be dry and things are going to be brown. Nature of the geographical area, it being a semi-desert environment and all.

The springs are largely because of the number of people and wells and demand on the water table.
