Not to derail further (with apologies to jbanda), but I remember Hurricane Katrina conspiracies pointed the other way. And the HAARP weather control **** has been flying around for years. The world's full of fruitcases and basketcases of all variety and always has been; they just get more amplification now from people who want to sound smart by pointing them out as being in error. Social media lets you do that without actually having to talk to the guy dancing on a street corner or trying to start up interesting debates at dive bars.

*but seriously, go check out that dude's author page. I think he's full of promise.

Reading up on some of the western NC and eastern TN devastation, and it's REAL bad.

One of my favorite youtube guys is Cleetus McFarland, who lives in Bradenton, FL. He and his wife are up in Asheville with his helicopter evacuating folks, delivering food, water, medicine. Seriously good bull, and man I feel for those folks who are trapped and dealing with such devastating flooding.

any accounting of how many dams broke?

I've seen several reports of dams overtopping (Lake Lure, and another in TN), but I haven't seen any that outright failed.

Last I saw/heard, none of the dams outright failed.

If anyone is looking for ways to help the people in western NC, Blue Ridge NPR has a list of organizations you can donate to. See link below.

https://www.bpr.org/bpr-news/2024-09-28/list-ways-to-donate-and-help-flood-victims-in-western-north-carolina-after-hurricane-helene

Additionally the United Way of North Carolina has a fund set up specifically for Helene relief. Link below.

Thanks for posting that bpr link. I definitely prefer to donate to local organizations in the communities.

Hope Mill, Inc. is managing the helicopter drops. I am going to donate money to them.

No way am I giving United Way one red cent so they can pocket 60% of the donation.

My son and I were just up that way the weekend before for the NASCAR race in Bristol, TN on the TN/VA border. We went for a couple of drives thru a few of those mountain towns that got devastated a few days later. Really sad stuff.

Yeah. The fear porn is the predictions showing direct Houston hits when it still hasn't formed a storm yet.

Here's the text that goes along with that graphic. Not exactly fear porn.

From nhc - noaa about the chart posted above. The narrative provides needed context.

Gulf of Mexico:
Disorganized showers and thunderstorms over portions of the Gulf of Mexico are associated with a surface trough. A broad area of low pressure is likely to develop over the Gulf of Mexico late this
weekend or early next week, but subsequent tropical or subtropical development could be limited by the system's potential interaction with a frontal boundary. Regardless of development, locally heavy
rains could occur over portions of Mexico during the next few days and over portions of the Florida Peninsula next week.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent.
* Formation chance through 7 days...low...30 percent.

I learned from the VP debate that major hurricanes are now more frequent due to man made climate change. So this makes sense.

Tampa had all kind of issues with Helene passing to the west but it was moving north. This one is coming perpendicular to the coast and will absolutely pile up water there. FEMA better be checking under their couch cushions bc this one could be really bad.

FEMA is out of money. Tampa residents are SOL.

Feel terrible for Florida. The bought-and-paid-for federal government has prioritized giving all our money away to foreign con artists, perverts and terrorists so there is no relief left for US citizens.

I'm supposed to fly to Tampa Wednesday as part of a multi-stop itinerary. I guess I'll be spending some time on the phone with United since barring a miracle that leg of the trip will obviously not be happening.

My BIL has been working for FEMA with Helene and the one that hit Louisiana. They flew him home this morning and are flying him back to Florida on Tuesday.

What's his opinion on FEMA's performance with Helene? We have yet to hear any first hand or second hand info from anyone who knows someone there?
