Kind of wish I had not found this thread. We live on the coast and now I'm questioning that with every damn storm that happens. Only lived there a year and we've already narrowly avoided flooding with Alberto. Had a drive by with Beryl. And now watching this and this one would absolutely flood and wipe out our lower level.

Were you not familiar with the hazards of owning a home in a hurricane zone?

I'm a little confused by this comment. Would you rather be surprised by it?

Of course. It's one thing to know about it; it's another to actually live in it and have to deal with it in real life.

Regardless, I'll blame my wife if something happens. She was the one who was adamant about living here. She grew up here; I didn't. So this is all new to me.

Ah, so June to November you're going to live with a clenched butthole. Good exercise as a defensive mechanism, but probably not enough to resist a 'cane.

Thoughts & Prayers.

I'm confused. Are you all implying that the climate is, in fact, not getting hotter? Regardless of whatever man made effect you "believe" may or may not have caused it? Empirically, I didn't think this was debatable, but this is Texags.

It's the anthropomorphic effects that we do not agree with and we believe they are vastly overmodeled.

Also, when the only solutions seem to actually be destruction of the Western economy and taxing people into oblivion, it's specious.

Also, when China and India are never called to task for the ridiculous amount of pollution they put out, it's specious.

Also, when all these climate change zealots are constantly jetting around the world spewing out way more pollution per capita than any of us, it's specious.

Absolutely heard on all that. But does that tweet from a meteorologist trigger all of those geopolitical talking points?

I just took it to mean that the earth is warming and causing a lot of storms, full stop.

Edit: I actually had to look up the word specious. Great word.

We are in one of the coolest periods in earth's history. We are coming up out of that. So yes, the earth is getting warmer, but no, it is not going to be catastrophic.

I think like most things nowadays it's just an unprovable yet unfalsifiable platform to morally dunk on the chuds (who you the smart folk are definitely not one of)

Empiricism has nothing to do with any of this

Otherwise we'd see left wing nuclear energy evangelism

It's that tweet coupled with past tweets/posts/words from Lanza. It's context.

One tweet should generally not be taken in a vacuum.

My opinion.

Anyone that knows what's happened since the Younger Dryas period understands what's going on. . .

The latest study from "Science" (the journal) in case Matt Lanza actually cares about facts the slightest bit. Also for those that think that melting ice caps means we've killed the planet.

It's because we have followed these meteorologists for a while and already know their stance. see this.

Why was Hurricane Helene so bad? Fossil fuel pollution.
From Angela Fritz, CNN Senior Weather & Climate Editor

(CSU/CIRA & NOAA)
Hurricane Helene was bound to be a major disaster.
The atmosphere, warmed by more than a century of fossil fuel pollution, is hotter now than it was in pre-industrial times. That means it can hold more moisture, which wrings out as torrential rain in storms like Helene, triggering deadly flooding not just in Florida but across the Southeast.
Helene also rapidly intensified twice before it reached Florida, because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is off-the-charts warm much like the rest of the Atlantic. More than 90% of warming around the globe over the past 50 years has taken place in the oceans, and it's making storms more likely to undergo these rapid intensification cycles.
Sea levels in Florida are as much as 8 inches higher than they were in 1950. The speed of that rise is increasing too. This translates to higher storm surge.
Across the board, Helene was a hurricane supercharged by climate change.

Sea surface temperatures were abnormally warm as Helene crossed from the Caribbean Sea to the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday into Wednesday, allowing the system to rapidly intensify. The darker the orange, the warmer the water is than normal.
CNN Weather
"For decades now, scientists have been warning us that extreme weather events will be exacerbated by this blanket of carbon pollution we've been wrapping around our planet," said Katharine Hayhoe, chief scientist at the Nature Conservancy. "But as a human, it is shocking to see the devastation occurring in front of our eyes, affecting the people and places we know and love."
Hurricane expert Jeff Masters tallied up some numbers last night that speak for themselves:
There have now been eight Category 4 or 5 hurricane landfalls on US soil in the past eight years.
That's as many as the entire 57 years that came before it.

"The atmosphere, warmed by more than a century of fossil fuel pollution, is hotter now than it was in pre-industrial times."

This kind of cherry-picked statistic is compelling only for those who don't know the whole story. Go back further, and you get a very different picture.

I'd prefer they take it to the climate change board and leave this one to talk about hurricanes.
