So just as a data point on the strength of the wind and seas, I was just on a ship that rode the storm out offshore while empty, which means they have a larger sail area but also they can also go faster because less tonnage being propelled.

They put the bow in to the seas and their engines full ahead, which would usually get them around 14 knots ahead, and they were being pushed astern at .3 knots. That is an incredible amount of force.

Maybe a related question for you:

Did the Edmund Fitzgerald break in half because it was full of ore and the bow and stern ended up on waves while the middle of the ship was suspended over the trough?

I've heard and read different things but didn't know if you had to study that one back in school.

I did not and I am honestly not too familiar with the construction of Lakers so couldn't say one way or another. Those would have to be some incredibly massive seas with a long period. I know the lakes have a lot of fetch but know next to nothing about how big the seas get up there.

I've read some stuff about it and one thought is the hatches were open, so water could get into the holds. So you start adding weight to the boat and the ship just gets too heavy.

I saw a pickup turned on all night at Crystal Beach. Do they have outlets? Seems like a good use - turn your 50K truck into an $800 generator. Wonder what that equated to in odometer miles.

Yeah, that's all done. I'm trying to figure out financial division.

I offered to my neighbor to have my lawn service cut up the tree, we agreed the price was decent. The tree was managed.

The lawn service guy told me it's about a 75/25 split, mine being the lessor of the two, in terms of the effort to manage it.

So do my neighbor and I split it as such or does the neighbor have responsibility since it was his tree?

Tree was healthy, it appears this is truly an act of God.

I'm reading elsewhere we just split it amicably and be done with it. His insurance likely won't cover it since it neither caused damage nor blocked my neighbors driveway. I think that's how we're gonna handle it.

If it falls from my property, I pay for it. If it falls and causes an insurance adjuster to show up, it no longer between neighbors. It's between insurance companies. As for the deductible, could still be complicated, but hopefully amicable.

Rainman Ray (a Youtube mechanic) had a series of videos on some mods he did on his personal Sliverado 2500 to pull double duty as a small scale power supply during hurricanes. I think all together it was a second alternator, controllable idle setpoint mod, and a big bank of batteries & an inverter feeding a bunch of outlets in the toolbox.

I guess the powers that be moved from lake Conroe board to Centerpoint work ticket issuers. Just trying to keep those people in kingwood down....

That sucks. It's insane how long this is taking. They need to have crews who come in at night and work a night shift to speed things up. I went up to Trinity on Saturday to see my dad (who had power) and saw tons of line trucks in MoCo. Hardly see anything around Kingwood from CP.

I'm in Riverchase and we got it Saturday afternoon and then a transformer blew overnight and we got it back around 2:45 yesterday afternoon. Wife just texted that it's out again, but no boom. I'm assuming they killed it so they can work on other lines, at least that's my hope.

The Centerpoint people probably all live in mansions around lake Conroe, which is why driving through Montgomery county on the way to Kingwood everything has power.

Cross that line of Harris county where center point takes over the energy and nothing has power

If you don't want a company looking out for their bottom line, then you're going to have to make it a government entity and all that comes with that.

Nope.

Just like many on here lashing out in frustration he has every right to do so. I think it will only get worse if the county "nationalized" it like our current government services.

There's a happy medium between that and slashing things.

Come on.

You know the stats on what Centerpoint is spending on maintenance and how that compares with other electric utilities.

I live in the yellow and I have power. Just goes to show how broad it is when they highlight these groupings of circuits.

I've seen some posted. I noticed they were always in per capita numbers instead of actual dollars or work performed. I also know there's a good chance it's apples to oranges regardless withoutan actual analysis of anything being compared. But it's a point of argument.

I also expect Centerpoint to use this outrage to their advantage and propose raising their rate to do what everyone is demanding. And then I expect people will fight against it just like before.

I would like to see a real investigation into causes of failures...showing all the repairs they had to make this go-round grouped into categories. It may not correlate with right of way maintenance - I really don't know. If most of the downed lines are from trees outside of the right of way you could trim all you want and not make a difference. But I assume if you grouped the repairs they had to make, you could at least make a coherent argument as to how to prevent those going forward.

Hard to form a good opinion without actual facts. Unfortunately at this point the knives are out and it's political. We'll probably never get real facts. People will make political hay with this, someone will "do something" and it will leave the public consciousness, and we won't know whether anything changed til the next storm hits.
