Are we there yet?

No.

Are we there yet?

No.

How will we know?

I'll tell you when we see a road sign.

Have we seen a sign yet?

Will you tell us when you see a sign?

oh so you were upset because your neighbors had power and they should have been as miserable as you according to the Map that probably has something reporting somewhere that *something* is wrong and the data isn't peeking out your window into their living room...got it.

WOW…way to jump to conclusions and put words in someone's mouth. Not what I said at all.

I said the map/legend is confusing and not accurate. BIG difference.

Then legend appears to be set up to lead people to believe that the restoration process happens in stages.

If I know people around me have power, and they are orange and I don't have power and am blue, then the map becomes absolutely useless.

Also, it doesn't make sense that an area can jump from "assessment in progress" to "fully energized". Maybe to Centerpoint employees it does, but to a customer reading the legend, it does not.

Has absolutely nothing to do with anyone being miserable or jealous and everything to do with pointing out Centerpoint can't even provide an accurate/logical map of their outages.

Orange might also mean "we haven't even looked" and since they have power, no one is complaining and it hasn't been a priority to update.

Imagine trying to play goalie for CP right now when a good amount of people are going on no power for day 5 now. Especially when they've got so many out of town crews here ready to rock & roll. Just absolutely unbelievable

I already edited, I shouldn't have been snarky.
I don't think it matters if they are still assessing areas that you can see have power. I'm not an expert, but just because the lights are on, doesn't mean that they won't need someone to double check that there isn't any damage.

this is exactly the type of complaint that would make them reticent to share this information IMO

Yes, but if an area that is orange has had power restored, that means they HAVE looked.

And I don't think any of these maps were generated or updates off of customer complaints. These weren't isolated, localized outages.

And if updating certain areas of the map isn't a priority, what's the point of even having a map?!?

Ok, I understand your point now. But it is called an "outage tracker", not a "damage tracker".

Centerpoint is presenting this as a way to track the progress of your restoration, and I'm pretty sure that's how most people are reading it.

Touche. But didn't the map always exist (at least for the last few years)?

I think it may have looked different but I've used their outage tracker before (didn't work any better back then).

They also supposedly have a text alert system. I've had enough outages in my neighborhood in the last two years to know that's never worked properly, either.

I thought maybe this tracker was touted as being "new and improved". And I didn't get the impression they released it to the public because of any sort of pressure. But maybe I missed something.

I refused to even look at the map for the first couple of days because I knew it wouldn't be accurate. I've gotten so many emails in the past saying "your power has been restored" only to be sitting in the dark, I don't believe anything they tell me.

What exactly do you expect to happen the week after a hurricane? Not just that, but the third event in 2 months?

I have no problem with people being frustrated. The last couple of months had sucked with the storms. My neighborhood was involved all 3. I just don't get all of this outrage that doesn't appear to have merit.

If the information being relayed is lies about how many have been restored than get out the pitch forks. Otherwise what taking place here isn't frustration, but just weird manifestation of hyper negativity. It's like y'all believe you've been personally wronged, but can't actually explain why.

The biggest difference to me is the downfall of social media. Just like this thread the majority of things posted aren't correct, people purposely choose to not believe what is correctly posted, and worse purposefully use it to fuel hate. With Ike this didn't exist.

People weren't sitting inside looking to be miserable and complain. We looked twice a day for updates and went out and volunteered and helped neighbors. People now look to find ways to amplify the negative where before we looked to find the positive in relationships built with neighbors while it took weeks to get power.

The comment about me on the golf board is correct and it's for the same reasons. I can't explain why the mob mentality gets under my skin, but I wish it didn't. I just hate when social media mobs go after people or companies to trt and ruin them or cost them their jobs only to shrug and walk away later like nothing happened when it turns out it was completely wrong. And yet the very people who justified their actions in the name of holding others accountable now strangely face no consequences for the jobs or companies they impacted.

I don't work or have anything to do with Centerpoint. I worked in capital projects in similar industries. I imagine there are a lot of Aggies who do work for them and I imagine there's real frustration for them in seeing things like this thread.

3 events in 2 months?

They should have their plan all tuned up and be able to implement it smoothly by now. Or do you disagree?

Oh speaking of CenterPoint's Power Alert Service, I added my cell phone for texts, got the initial text where I had to confirm, and despite confirming, I haven't gotten anything from Centerpoint. I finally added email/phone calls and got those but nothing via text.

Again, communication. I get that tech **** is hard, but come on. Don't push people to your Power Alert Service and then you never get any texts despite confirming you wanted the texts.

Bingo.

Again- I'm not going to pretend like I know how long this should take. I'm definitely frustrated it's not going quicker. But who wouldn't be?

The communication has been objectively awful and that's really all I ask for. I would be perfectly okay if they said "this damage is severe and we're unsure of a timeframe, but please plan to be without power for 7-10 days".

That would suck.. but at least people could make concrete plans and know what to expect.

This shouldn't be too much to ask. I'm not asking for updates every hour on the hour.

Getting a definitive answer on a restoration date in less than 5 days is unrealistic?

No. I imagine all 3 events have amplified the issues we're seeing today. From unhealthy and already damaged trees causing more issues, to infrastructure still not fully repaired from all the patches they had to make previously, to equipment in inventory to be able to make repairs greatly depleted. As someone who's managing complex projects I'm more impressed their still being as effective as they say they are being.

I was referring to people on Nextdoor saying they don't understand why they didn't have power 24 hours after a hurricane hit in regards to unrealistic expectations.

I fully agree with your point and made a couple posts about how CenterPoint's communication has been awful.

I had 30 outages between Sept 2022-Oct 2023. Never got a single text alert despite being signed up. That system doesn't work. I think maybe it did at one point, but it hasn't for years.

What's crazy to me is that the automated phone call works. How in 2024 an automated phone call feature works but a text messaging system doesn't is wild to me.

Well, I say it doesn't work. Based on my experience with them, it's either purposefully non-functioning, or they don't have accurate enough information (and have that info paired) for it to work properly.

I haven't gotten an automated phone call in a long time, either. Usually, I get emails. But since last June, I haven't gotten those either. At best, I might get two - one when power is lost and another when power is restored. But nothing in between. Don't always even get those two , though.

Idiots who don't understand the basic concept of "Don't mess with the middle class."

Yet the hubris of those who champion Centerpoint's monopoly and blatant incompetent response to our situation is abhorrent.

Especially their response to paying customers which is horrible biz.

Basic business with a government entity (like Centerpoint ) is never mess with the middle class.

This is what's driving me crazy. We were lucky to get power back fairly quickly after Monday. Then today at noon, unexpected power outage. Crickets from CP until 4 hours later where they told us "planned service maintenance and improvements that require us to temporarily turn off power" but gave absolutely zero indication as to how long this planned maintenance would take.

For all the mouth breathers who would tell me "just be prepared!" - I am prepared. I have a generator and portable AC unit that keeps us comfortable. But since we got power back, I loaned it out to a friend who is still without power. Since CP gave no indication as to whether I was looking at something that would be resolved by dinner or would continue for days, I was stuck trying to figure out if I should be a dick and tell me buddy they have to sleep in the hot or bite the bullet for my family. Opted to be a dick, and then had to hook all that **** up in the dark.

It doesn't seem like it would've been hard for them to give us a heads up for planned maintenance, and I also feel like it should be easier to provide a completion estimate for planned maintenance.

It' makes no sense to me how anybody can defend CenterPoint on communication alone. It may not matter to them if any of us peon residential customers are out of power, but people need information to make real decisions like the one you were forced into tonight.

Centerpoint screwed up by creating a duty.

They created a duty upon themselves to keep and maintain a detailed outage map.

Now thats the standard. Thats the state of the art.

From now until the end of time people will demand a house by house outage map accurate in real time.

Centerpoint would be better off posting updates on a large scale map by zip code.

Residents might be better off because it eliminates the phycological effect of staring at an outage tracker.

A watched pot takes longer to boil.

A lot of what we are seeing is people trying to reason through something they don't know anything about.

'My neighbor has power and I don't'

'they have it across the street and I don't'

'Haji mart one block away has lights and we don't'

Watching the tracker is like being on a longhaul flight and checking the map every hour. You better off not thinking about it, and you'll get there sooner not thinking about it.
