So there's a white plastic piece that looks like it is connected to the chain itself, and the black plastic piece with the release handle connects to the door. I think when I tried to see if the door would open after thinking it had reconnected, the white piece was pulled too far back for the black piece to engage it. I guess he used the screwdriver to pull that back where the door piece could click back in.

Did some recon in our subdivision in the 459 (Carriage Park off Steep Bank Trace E)...there is a long section of lines along a dirt walking trail that have been pulled down by leaning or fully fallen trees, and a couple of those trees were pretty big. One pole was leaning, but none were snapped.

There was a crew working on it (truck was from Michigan), but they didn't have any idea of a timeline for clearing all of that foliage.

Those trees should have been pruned back a long time ago...waiting on Mother Nature to do it was unwise.
Someone sent my daughter pictures of those downed lines. Apparently "green" doesn't mean you have power.

I'm well aware of how many massive trees are here. I've lived here for almost 50 years.

If the people want this to stop happening there are two choices. Move everything underground for some exorbitant amount of money or remove things that are likely to fall on lines/equipment during major wind events.

But I'm apparently an idiot so feel free to disregard my comments.
Honestly, we are all idiots for living in such a nasty horrible city, if it's any consolation. Seriously, this place sucks and just keeps getting suckier. Parts of Autumn are cool I guess. And a few days in Spring.

Houston has got to be the most disaster prone city in the US.

Recently found out that Harris County is #2 in tornadoes out of all counties in the US.

People like Houston because of the relatively low cost of living but there's no free lunch. Living in Houston is voluntary assumption of a known risk.

Like somebody pointed out earlier, Florida construction is built to higher standards to resist hurricane damage but at some point Houston is going to be doomed by the same problem that they struggling with in Florida right now.

At some point property is going to become uninsurable.

If a property is uninsurable, it's also unmarketable.

Saw 2 Penn trucks on Warm Springs just sitting there. Most of Warm Springs has power...they needed to go about 3 streets further to the downed lines. As I finished walking my dog, I saw them driving off. Not sure they did anything.

And yet California doesn't seem to have those kinds of assumed insurance threats and faces similar types of mass destruction every summer.

Volume of tornados means very little by itself. Houston has a lot of tornados, but they are rarely more than EF1 or EF2.

Contrast that with Dallas, who has a lot less in volume, but they are prone to catastrophic EF4 and even EF5.

wtf is xfinity doing while we are talking about ****ty companies? They've been out this entire time too (even if you have power) and I haven't heard a peep out of them.

Very time I check the web for Xfinity, the update is basically just "we'll get to it when it's safe". That's it.

Our xfinity went out Monday afternoon. Came back sometime Thursday, then back out Thursday evening. Then we weirdly had cable but no internet Friday evening. And now that's out, too.

At least the credit process from the derecho was pretty easy….

What was the credit process? They reimburse you for any days it was down? How'd you go about doing that?

They gave me like $35.

I just opened the app, went to the virtual assistant and said I wanted a credit for an outage. They had questions I went through then asked the dates and I submitted it. Got a weird screen that said credit for $0 was submitted but just ignored that. Got an email like 15 minutes later saying my $35 credit was approved. Think that outage was 5 days?

Space City who partners with Centerpoint is pounding the drum the electrical supply is F'd and needs to be fixed. So it's out there and gaining traction. Whether anything happens or not remains to be seen.

Like somebody already pointed out over the past 40-years seems like Houston has run the gauntlet relatively speaking.

We had Alicia, Ike and a ton of non hurricane storms and Floods (Allison, Francis etc.)

Also had many years over that period with no major storms at all.

Imagine hurricane hitting the Houston metro area in 2024 at the strength of Carla in 1961.

As pointed out numerous times this Beryl was only Cat 1.

A Carla level storm and we talking a mass migration of people like we saw in NOLA and Gulfport with Katrina.

Which 30 year long project gets approved first?

-$30 billion Ike Dike

-Hardening of electrical distribution system against windstorm damage.

My wife's office is across the street from CP downtown. After the derecho CP had a bunch of windows knocked out. While other buildings got boards up they were still standing around.

The head of facilities for my wife's company saw a CP guy on a step ladder knocking out glass of a broken window. He had no hardhat, no harness, and no spotter. Facilities guy called CP to report this and they ignored him. 15 min later, he called again and said he would be calling OSHA and reporting them. Amazingly they found the needed PPE.

Refugees from Houston become Dallas' problem at 200mph.

Seems like a good compromise.

Insurance companies have been pulling out of California for a while already. It's just not a national issue that most care about

Trees are 40 years older and falling on lines.

Also a Cat 1 dirty side vs Cat 3 clean side is a lot different.

Parts of my neighborhood never lost power while the rest of us were down almost 4 days.

Last night we got power back and maybe 5 minutes later people heard a loud explosion and several houses that never lost power are now out.

They have called to report it to CP and are being told they are only taking calls relates to down power lines. Anything else will have to wait.

According to the new map:
  • Home (77042) - no restoration date available, pending review
  • Office (77092) - no restoration date available, pending review

Well, that is very disheartening. Both of my properties are surrounded by green, yet they can't determine when they'll get power.
