You know… it's really not as simple as just packing up and leaving for many of us.

It actually is. I don't buy that. Again, different generation

If Centerpoint gave out expectations it would be easier…..granted.

I was in college during Rita when family and friends leaving Katy/Houston got to CS 6-10 hrs later. Many folks I know won't ever evacuate after that.

You also have to think about families with pets that don't have the means to get out of town nor can afford a hotel room for many days at a time. Perhaps they don't have a car with A/C and one reliable enough to get out of town.

It's essentially a basic calculation for most folks. How bad would it be if I stayed (how bad is storm) and lost power vs what is the cost of leaving?

Okay. You're right. You know everything about my circumstances. Silly me. My generation just sucks so bad.

Give me a freaking break dude.

This is what I'm talking ahout. Hardly anyone has offered to help through this. But here we are with the "my generation was better" nonsense.
There are a couple grumpy boomer types on here, but lots of people have offered help of different kinds.

I saw neighbors helping each other in my hood. I even offered/asked some people I knew.

And yet some neighbors are *******s. People have changed. I don't feel the same sense of community. One guy has a 5kw genny and a window unit. He left town with his family and locked his genny up in his garage. Wouldn't you have given the setup to a neighbor who couldn't leave or a single mom/elderly lady of which there are several in our neighborhood?

I get all that.

But most people here have the means to get out of it is so horrible. Instead they ***** and moan.

I work with kids that don't have the means to get out . Most here do. Bring your pets.

Again, different generation. Make it work if you , your pets, your family is so miserable

Is this company trustworthy? I had some shingles on the ground but can't tell if they came from my roof. I'm hesitant to call any random roofing company for an inspection out of fear they will go up there and try to fleece me for a new roof. I've heard stories about roofing contractors just lying or even causing damage themselves and then using that as an evidence you need a new roof.

It's tough to know who the trust.

Word of advice as an owner of a roofing company - do your absolute best to try and be home when whichever company that you call walks the roof. I usually go out and do my inspections with my installers who will be doing the work. Majority of my clients will usually be outside with me while my installer is doing the inspection. You'll be able to physically see if they're intentionally causing damage to the roof.

I walked a job today with a guy who had several shingles in their backyard that didn't have any damage whatsoever (shingles were from a neighbors roof). I always have my installers take detailed pics of any damage to show the customer. If they want to patch the roof until we can come back out to do the complete repair (underlay & color match shingles) we will get the customers permission to do so before we price out the labor & materials in a full repair.

That said - I'm happy to assist anyone on here with damage. We do both residential and commercial roofing. My installers are 2nd & 3rd generation roofers with 20+ years of experience.

You would think. But one never knows what is one's cup until it is tipped

People are inherently selfish. But at least you know your neighbor

Our neighbors have been fantastic through this. Everyone lending hands and chainsaws to take down trees in neighbors' yards, letting neighbors run extension cords off their generators, opening up spare bedrooms if a neighbor has AC, helping clean up driveways and yards when other neighbors are out of town, offering to bring ice and food to anyone that needs it.

Our street in our neighborhood is fantastic.

Never claimed I knew your circumstances. But apparently your circumstances….by your tone…are more "unique" than others.

Good God kid…..don't get so triggered by a little advice like "Get out of town."

Let me guess. Your generation/current state in life = retired so no job to report to, no young kids to take care of, and plenty of money saved up to stay in a hotel indefinitely if you need to.

Another night with no power in 77386. Honestly the most inexcusable part of this (at least to me) is the lack of communication.

I'm no expert and I admittedly have no idea how long it "should" take to get things back up and running. But it's not hard to communicate.

It's just been a really ****ty last 72 hours or so. Seems like it won't be until Sunday for my neighborhood.

Are you back on? I got power in 77386 about 45 mins ago.

I met Scott today. He went above and beyond to patch my roof after getting left at the alter by another company earlier and with rain coming. I'll be going through the process of insurance and getting a new roof in the coming weeks. He stayed for nearly an hour to get a crew out tomorrow to do some additional work. He's an Aggie and I was very pleased with the level of service

Bill has a son in the Corps, thereby demonstrating that good parenting gives the second generation more opportunities than the first. Just sit down and keep quiet, you pinhead.

To be clear the real Bill Yeoman started his academic career as a freshman football player on scholarship at the A&M College, living in Walton Hall. Transferred to West Point as Red Blaik scooped up any decent players on an ROTC scholarship back then. Robert Reese Neyland took a similar path 30 years earlier.

This. Also they'd spend a year arguing the merits of closed bus vs open bus. And you'd probably confuse them with AC current design.

Yes- that's my husband's business card. Holden Roofing has been around Houston for over 50 years. They are the largest re-roofing company in Texas.

I'd like to think he's pretty trustworthy- as Swimmer said, I do leave our kids alone with him.

On the professional note- several posters here have used him, and many have met him through various events. He is class of '09 and was in H-1.

If you have open holes or leaks, he can come out and help you get that covered up immediately, and then walk you through your options - whether that is repair, insurance, straight bid, etc.

Reality is we are a large / humongous state with a small state mindset. In situations where people need help, we tend to struggle because the system is designed for people to compete against one another. Not help each other.
