Unless someone here is an idiot, we all want that, but how much are YOU willing to pay for all of that per Kwh?

How much are you willing to impose on other people for that?

There is no free lunch. Everything costs money, and I'll be a lot of you would be surprised just how much money

How did the city pay for some of the drainage improvements they've done in the last 20 years?

At the end of the day, I can spend a couple of grand hardening my property, and I did.

However still can't work with internet being down. Insurance rates are going to continue to rise from everyone making claims - some of it will be power related. We will bear the brunt of the economic loss. At what point do we say stop and that paying 7 cents more per kWh to change the electrical landscape is the cheaper route. We've got to be getting close.

After Ike, the city voted for a drainage fee. Then the city gov promptly stole it and put it into the general funds.

Power came back on last night and has now been off again for about two hours. Sugar land area.

At least the house cooled off overnight.

The best time to bury the power lines is 30 years ago.

The second best time is now.

Hm okay. Had an electrician do ours and he said CP has to reconnect my lines to their lines…

That's why I'm not sold on the government taking Centerpoint back over. Houston will grift the extra profits away, Texas will have them magically deposited into the Surplus Slush Fund. Nothing will actually go back to the citizens.

But maybe if Centerpoint was forced to collect it and spend they would try to do the right thing…

Honestly blowing everything up might be more beneficial at this point.

You received hate because your suggestion was Reddit-level stupidity. Do you know how far 100 yards is? Have you ever seen a football field? Suggesting that no trees should be allowed within 100 yards of a structure is one of the stupidest things anyone has ever typed out on this website.

We are losing untold millions on wages, productivity, insurance claims, etc. So again do nothing forever until the city turns into Detroit on the gulf?

I think at the very least it would be fair to ask the crews who came here from out of town to give their assessment of the recovery process. To at least get some insight into whether or not Centerpoint managed it competently. And maybe some thoughts on the condition of equipment that had to be replaced (they should be able to tell if something failed simply because it was old, and the outage might have been prevented through maintenance).

But the sense I get from my friend in the industry is that they are a tight knit group, and I don't think anyone will want to "tell-on" CP if there is anything negative to report.

This. The city of Houston still hasn't cleared all the trees off city streets in Kingwood area. I guess they are still looking for all of the missing chainsaws. lol

Thank God they have contractors running the water and sewer plants. All services were much better before Kingwood was annexed by the city of Houston.

One more example of Socialism not working. They want more revenue always and can't provide the services.

Fair enough...I get that

Maybe there's technology and innovation I don't know about because I'm not an electrical engineer but I'm not sure there's anything to do to better handle a Cat 1 hurricane.

Winds that strong fck shlt up.

This is never gonna happen with existing lines, and the idea just needs to die. I live in a subdivision that's only about 15 years old in the oldest sections, and even our lines aren't buried. And their are frickin trees everywhere because every time in the last 10 years someone cut them down, the Greenpeace wannabes in the 'hood staged a protest.

Houston was founded on the principle of no zoning/no development regulations. It was a point of pride among all the men whose names you see on street signs (ie, Cullen et al).

The best we can hope for is better preventative maintenance and communication.

They really should consider increasing the aerial easement. 10 ft when trees are 50 to 100 ft tall is not enough imo.

Let's start with just not planting trees directly under power lines…..

I'm currently working on a $3 Billion TIC project. Even our customer did not want to bury the power lines on the project.

Burying lines is not a panacea. Things can go wrong there too, and when it does go wrong, it is way more expensive to fix than overhead.

See my edit above about the neighborhood environmentalists.

I've walked about 4 miles of my hood since the storm. There are a few downed trees, but they all seem to be in the common areas. The homeowners who have 30, 40, 50 ft+ pine trees in their yards dodged a bullet in this one.

There was a massive one in the easement/green space area behind my house. A limb could have taken out my roof. I was relieved a few years ago when it got struck by lightening and had to be removed.

Really my expectation of centerpoint is three-fold, and it's not an impossible ask:
  • Have a robust storm response plan in place, they got caught with their pants down
  • Maintain a measure of supplies on hand to restore power quickly to the 'easy wins', this is essentially a cost burden/insurance policy, no?
  • Communicate and provide accurate updates!
TXTransplant
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Agreed. They should be held to standards and risk assessment expectations similar to the refineries and chemical plants.

Blaming it all on Mother Nature every time should not be tolerated.

Even when weather disasters cause issues at those facilities, there are ALWAYS other issues that are identified and corrected to improve the response in future events.

None of that is unreasonable.

I'm not saying it was the right decision, but good luck putting that Genie back in the bottle. I personally think it's WAY too late to change that decision. Harris Co is simply too developed. Better to spend money and effort elsewhere, IMO.

The line to terminal C garage is usually the Uber/Lyft staging line for pick up, not for individual parkers. I see it twice a month when I'm traveling for work.

I never really thought about it but the area I lived in in South shore has all buried power lines and I never had an issue with power. One tenant lost power for about a day this go around but in the freeze and derecho and other things, they never lost power. Probably also helps that they are with TMNP as well.

No, I agree there's no going back now. But I can't help but think that being able to focus on residential customers would be easier if you knew where they were zoned. Having little pocket neighborhoods scattered across the city makes it more difficult for Centerpoint to have big wins, so to speak.

Ha! I grew up in San Antonio hating Houston. On its best days, it has a certain charm. The food is great, as are most of the people, for a city this size. It's definitely an economic powerhouse. But it's worst days suck major ass, and I don't blame anyone for moving. While I have my gripes, I have to admit Houston has grown on me a bit.

I'll be here a while, and I have a bigger generator on order. I'll weather the next one just like I am this one.
I thought you were going to say somewhere NICE like Colorado. Here you are dogging Houston because you are from SA???

come on now.

Seems like Centerpoint is taking a lot of heat over the sight of trucks assembled at a staging area.

This seems consistent with every hurricane response or logistics operation we've ever seen.

Machinery and personnel are staged. Work orders are issued and resources dispatched.

Problem we got here is people are so use to just in time inventory, same day Amazon Prime delivery, Uber eats dispatched to their doorstep at the click of a button to solve whatever problem they got.

People have been lulled into thinking the world moves that fast when it doesn't.

This is my whole issue.

Honestly...Is 3-5 days really that outrageous after a hurricane blows through the 3rd largest metro area in the country?

I think people are generally outraged by the lack of communication. The hurricane destroyed lots of infrastructure, but it did not destroy centerpoint's ability to provide eta's and maintain an accurate outage map. If people had an estimate for zip codes/neighborhoods people could actually plan a little better.

The inability to communicate accurate updates makes centerpoint look outrageously incompetent. Yes power being down for a few days is expected after a hurricane. But how long is anyone's guess. I left town Tuesday and currently have no idea when I will be able to return. Hoping before the weekend, but I have no ability to plan it out right now. Very hard with young kids, dog, etc. to just go somewhere indefinitely to escape + try to work remotely by the way.
I think it's a little more than just staging too. I was on HWY 6 heading to CS today and I met the convoy headed south of bucket trucks. This was about 8 AM. They wouldn't get to staging for at least another hour at least before they could get checked in and assigned probably. On-site at 10 at the earliest? This puts them working in the hottest part of the day as well. . .
