There's definitely been some discussions about that. The older two are little sponges right now and love learning about animals so we just might.

I'm not knocking ya, those rates aren't too bad. I just looked at rates over the weekend earlier because I thought about making it a "vacation weekend" and saw standard rates around 1.2k per and even discount sites rates were around 900.

Rainfall Totals for Beryl (actually past 7 days but little if any amounts before Beryl)...

Small blessing that flooding hasn't been the headline for this one. That's a crazy amount of water.

Will we see video of Lina Hidalgo questioning somebody from Centerpoint on the 5pm news?

I went to high school with Brad's son. Had no idea he was the spokesperson here for CP. Oof.

My wife and I are considering either getting a portable generator + window unit, or just say screw it and get a generac, for the next time (I assume a generac wouldn't be an option until after hurricane season).

What's a reasonable cost for a good portable generator, window AC unit, and cables to hook up the window unit, fridge, TV, internet, and some chargers/portable lights? Of course I'll need to store gas as well. The issue with CO concerns me a bit too, so i was considering putting it on the back porch with the windows closed, which hopefully would be good enough.

I'm not sure if I'm willing to pay $10-15k for a generac.

I have the 13000 trifuel Duramax. Paid just under $2k with tax when it was on sale on the Dura max website. I think normal price is $2400. It's prob hard to get right now, though.
I have the 12K Duramax. It's in the shop right now just past warranty period and their customer service has been horrible. If I have to get a new one, it's going to be a Westinghouse so it's at least clean electric. I've been horribly disappointed in Duromax just trying to try and get them to help me troubleshoot the issue and buy parts.

That's really disappointing to hear. Care to share any details, just so we know what could go wrong?
Unfortunately no. It was great until it wasn't and I had been a big champion of it until last month. And Duromax is at least pretending they don't either. It still runs like a top, but it stopped producing voltage while running under load during the last storm (so not demagnetized). I've replaced the Automatic Voltage Regulator and worked through the windings and brushes. No issues there.

I'm that crazy person that maintains them like they recommend. Run every other month to keep the fluids going. Change the oil every year regardless of use and per run hours. The small engine mechanic I finally took it to commented it looked brand new and to just warranty it. Well, that's not an option because it's 4 years old. He thinks it's grounding itself out (unrepairable failure). If that's the case, it doesn't sound like there is a solution and Duramax isn't going to do anything about it.

That Centerpoint sure isn't moving much today. Maybe they got the easy fixes done and now it's going to take a bit longer for everybody else.

560K is way less than the 1.35m they show on their website. Not that we needed any proof, but this makes it clear that their numbers are just made up

I don't get people who live and die by numbers on their website. It doesn't change anything and by the time they update it it's already inaccurate.

I'd imagine the numbers being reported to city council are pretty close to what they believe are accurate.

Can't echo this enough.

We have 5, 3, 19 months, and 2 months at home. Zero chance we were riding this thing out short of having basically a whole home solution installed (we didn't).

We have been at the JW in San Antonio for the last two days doing exactly as you described
Nice humblebrag about how much sex you're having and how many sex trophies you got.
If it's the JW Marriott hill country, it's more of a humblebrag about $ cuz last I checked, those rooms were $1200 per night this week.
Yep. For 3 nights worth of money he could have set up a large portable generator tied into NG and his box to power the entire house.

But it's not really about that as you've mentioned.

Didn't mean to get anyone bent out of shape. The JW Marriott Hill Country has rooms through Expedia, Priceline, etc advertised for ~350 nightly this week. I think we were all in for about 500.

And over and above that it's more about the fact that we have 4 kids 5 and under so the chance to turn this into something fun for them instead of a stressful situation at home was more than worth it. There's a cumulative nature to the stress of waiting it out, especially with the younger kids, no matter how good your set up.

Didn't mean it to be a dick measuring content, was just emphasizing the point of getting out of town and making it a positive experience for the kids in Bill's post

Very cool

Hope yall have fun. Making it positive for the kids (and yourselves) and making memories.

Years later you can tell your kids about your shared hurricane experience. My son (who was 5 during Ike) still remembers "camping in the house" and the Menger Bar.

A majority of parents who stayed in Houston can also tell their kids about "The time we drove thru non-functional traffic lights to wait in 2 hour gas lines after Hurricane Beryl because we were hoarders…". Just kidding

Most of you know that I don't work for CenterPoint.

But even if I did work for CenterPoint, and most of you weren't aware that I work there, I'd want the entire Executive Leadership group ****canned.

Hundreds of billions to Ukraine, but we can't find one company competent enough to manage a CAT 1!

What a joke!

After the derecho I had an interlock installed 2 weeks ago on my breaker panel. It's a huge game changer being able to power all the 110 circuits in my house.
Who did you have install it, and if you don't mind sharing, what did it cost?

Probably the difference is customers actually in the city (since it's a city council meeting) vs total area customers.

Side note on this for the board.

With a 50-amp plug off this at 230 you can output 11,500w to your panel. If you were to fully use this unit you would need two panels, two 50a plugs, etc. to extract all the power out of this. Otherwise find the smallest generator that gives you consistent 11500w on natural gas and load up that 50a.
