I'm seeing a lot of "line services " trucks in my neighborhood. Should I be telling myself not to get excited?

I'm glad it's not supposed to be rainy soon. I need a window replaced and no telling how long that is going to take.

I bought a Honda EU2000i in 2007 when I used to host a tailgate. Used it a ton for tailgating and storms until about 2015. After that, I've kept up with annual maintenance and always let it run for a bit in early summer before hurricane season, but basically it's been in storage in the garage without any real use since 2015, until 6 weeks ago. Pulled it out when we lost power during the Derecho and it ran like a champ for 36 straight hours (minus the the time turned off to add gas every 8-9 hours). When my power came back on, I changed the oil and loaned it to a friend who was still out of power and they ran it for almost 48 straight hours without any issues. Honestly, thing is running better than it has in years. All this to say, if I ever need to replace it, I will gladly spend the money for the Honda.
I have one of those as well and fired it up a couple of months ago to change the oil in it when I changed the oil in the Generac. I poured the gas out and drained the carb when I put it away the previous time, which was probably a good 2 years or more. Took a half dozen pulls but it fired up and ran like a champ. I drained the fuel and carb again and put it away thinking I wouldn't need to use it for a while, but an elderly single lady up the street is without power, so I took it to her house, poured some gas in it and it fired right up. She won't come to the house to get in some AC, but she's able to run her fridge, a fan, and some lights.

They really are worth the money.

Again all I'm asking for is just some slight improvement after each of these events. Instead, we get this….

How many of them actually service and maintain them how they're supposed to, though? Especially seeing how some just ran for 100-200+ hours a month and a half ago? A generator isn't a set it, forget it, and always be covered type investment.

Also, it should be a reality and taken into consideration when fiscally looking at generators and when planning for emergency situations. The number of these things has grown exponentially. Don't expect parts or techs to be readily available

The above is a big reason why I just go with the interlock kit and portable generators. The unknowns really tip the scale to make the $20k in investment worth it to me.

For sure this. I'm in to my backup power about $1700 and should be able to power our garage apartment plus select circuits in our house or fewer circuits in the house and one home HVAC system. Really hard to justify an extra $10-$15 grand for the auto start generac.
I think this is where I'm going to end up. Right now, I just have a small 3000W generator to run portable AC, fans, chargers, and a couple of lights - enough to not make it miserable. But I'm not sure I want to drop $15K to make it so that we go from not miserable to comfortable for a couple of days every few years. Spending less than that for a generator that will power something like central AC, fridge, internet, etc. seems like the way to go.

For your backup power, how long does a tank of gas last? And how much gas do you keep on hand? That is the one benefit I see to a Generac with NG - I don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to refuel.
They sell dual fuel and tri fuel generators, which I would go with if it were me. They cost a bit more, but having options to fuel it would be worth the extra to me. I was talking to a neighbor this morning and he's running select things in his house on a tri fuel Duromax that's hooked to his NG line. Not sitting as pretty as many with a whole home, but still pretty comfortable.

If you go dual fuel, you can get some sizable propane tanks to keep on hand (and probably a lot easier to find to get refilled than gas) and the propane doesn't go bad.
So you could get a 13000W tri-fuel like posted above for $2K. Get an interlock switch installed, and hook it up to your NG line and you're looking at sub-$5K for what is essentially a whole home generator?
Pretty much. On NG, it will have less power, but you'll still be around 10,000 or so. You can run plenty of things and a couple of window units and live better than many. If the previous owner of my house wasn't a pilot for Delta who was stuck in Atlanta during Harvey while his wife was home alone with the kids and no power, that would be my go-to.

Yeah, I posted a few pages back. We literally just unboxed it last weekend.

I told my BF to get his going, and I'd just move my stuff to his fridge. Then I got an offer from my neighbor to put my stuff in her fridge (she left town early this am). So that's where we landed.

My BF went out to run errands, which included buying the supplies to hook up my generator. I think he feels terrible he didn't get it done.

The heat really gets to him, so I didn't want to nag him to do it yesterday. My house is a comfortable 77, so as long as all my fridge food doesn't spoil, I'm good.
If your neighbor has power, run some extension cords from her sockets to your fridge and a fan. There's a few houses on my street that those of us with whole homes are doing. It's not much, but helps.

That happened a few months ago and our neighbor said no. Even though we had a week old baby.

What an assh__e! The lady I'm loaning my Honda to has a neighbor with a Generac who is out of town. His dad was at the house yesterday and we asked if we could do that so she'd have a few things and he told us no. For people like that, I hope a tree falls on their vehicle.

Check their current load vs their generator rating. Your freezer is probably only 1-2 amps. If it's a whole house generator, it should easily be able to do it.

They have the maintenance plan with main Generac dealer near Tomball and the unit has been routinely doing the 10 minute weekly test with no issues. Frustrating.

There was a CP truck in Westbury 5 earlier doing a survey of the area. One of the guys told us that they probably wouldn't start the actual work until tomorrow due to a lack of crews to do the work.

One suggestion I made to a buddy was looking for an AirBnB out of town.

I'd look a bit further down the coast like Rockport/Port A. I bet quite a few cancelled their plans last week and there are probably places available for a reasonable price since they won't get rebooked.

For example...

Yep. And all I asked was if I could hook up our mini fridge to store the baby milk.

Karma at some point… but we'll see. They also reported us to the HOA because our trash can was left an extra day when we were on vacation.

Sounds to me like a handful of folks on here need to work on the hurricane preparedness.

ALWAYS be prepared. This way it won't matter where it makes landfall or how strong of a storm it is. All your shlt will be sitting in the garage ready to rock and roll if need be.

Don't depend on others because at the end of the day you've got to fend for yourself.

That's nice for lone wolfs, but seen people are also trying to help elderly parents, extended family, growing families, neighbors, etc.

On my own, I don't sweat these situations other than the literal sweat.

I'm going in to Houston tomorrow to buy some r22 and try to recharge an AC at my rental. I can bring a generator if anyone wants to borrow one.

On that note, anyone have experience recharging AC systems?

And I will plug this generator again. 12000/9500 dual fuel for a really fair price.

That's a great price for a pretty good generator.

For those with a Costco membership...

Oh and a note for those who are going to buy a generator or have one that has an electric start...be sure to put the battery on a battery tender! Nothing like doing everything right to store it but forgetting that and having to pull it like an 80's 3-wheel death machine.

CenterPoint just messing with me now.

Get a text saying power has been restored. Neighbors all got the same text.

I wisely didn't turn my generator off, but instead, flipped the generator breaker off and main on. No power.

Not surprising since I haven't seen CenterPoint around here, but why get people's hopes up.

At least Xfinity isn't bothering to tell us anything.

It came on at 11:06 AM. Got all excited, then heard the transformer going. Off at 11:10. A neighbor came and asked me about because she got the text saying it was restored and was confused.

If I remember correctly which hood you said you live in, that might have been it.
