I'm trying to get from Huntsville to the 288 side of Pearland. I can't find anything that says roads are still under water, so I'm assuming they are good.

Can anyone verify or contradict that?

I don't live anywhere near the Houston Area and have been following this thread since page 10.

Will somebody please give me an update on the GD golf cart!

Also this really sucks and I hope everyone on this thread is hanging in there. I'll never understand the smugness/glee some people get when something like this happens, as though you have done something to deserve it. Please be safe and try to stay cool today. I have nothing to offer but well wishes and mutual sympathy as I've been there before.

Why is ethanol free gas so important for the generator?

Anyone know if the Buccee's in Katy has any ethanol-free gas left?

Sorry if this has been covered. No power/internet and very spotty cell service currently.
A little bit earlier today, my brother said that is all they had left and people weren't filling their cars up with it because they didn't think their cars could use it.

Cleaner fuel burn for the small engines

But honestly it's not necessary. My Harbor Freight brand generator runs flawlessly for days at a time on regular low grade unleaded.

Because it can be left in the generator a lot longer without gumming up the carb. If you drain the gas in the tank and the carb after use, it'll be just fine on regular gas. Most people who complain their generator/lawn mower/etc doesn't work when they need it is because they filled up the tank and just let it sit for a year or so.

If you can get it, it really is ideal, but in this situation, I'm more in the "take what you can get" mindset.

I've commented several times there's no power so I don't know about the golf cart.

I promise as soon as power is back I'll update

Ethanol breaks down quickly causing issues, especially in small engines.

You either need to use ethanol free gas or put Stabil in every gas can you use, even if you intend to use it immediately.

I've never had an issue with boat motors, small engines, etc. but as family, we always put Stabil in for anything other than our cars/trucks.

Google maps has always been pretty accurate with at least freeways and still mostly accurate with side streets. Just check intersections for traffic to identify the lights that are out and have giant congestion.

Since this thread has all of the traffic, anyone have a REPUTABLE HVAC guy in league city area? Pretty sure my system just needs a recharge but it is r22 and all of the AC snakes try and make it sound like you need a whole new system when they find out you have R22

Agreed, quality of fuel is more important than ethanol content IMO

My opinion is you can use gas with ethanol as long as you use it all and don't let it sit in your generator for months after use. But, I would run ethanol-free gas through it on it's last use before you put it up for storage. The reason is ethanol-based gas will go through a separation phase while sitting for long periods and the ethanol will sink to the bottom of the gas tank. This usually occurs within 6 months of sitting, I believe (someone please correct me if this is wrong). When starting the engine after the separation phase has occurred, only ethanol will be drawn in, clog the carburetor, and the engine will not start. I'd also recommend changing out the ethanol-free gas at least once a year. I believe ethanol-free gas will last several months (8 minimum). It would be even better to run your generator until it runs out of gas totally before you put it away for storage.

Note: This all applies to lawn equipment as well - mowers, string-trimmers, chainsaws, edgers, blowers, etc. especially before you put them in storage for the winter.

This.

We've gone through multiple generators at the deer lease thanks to the gas from the podunk POS general store.

I only use gas from my neighborhood gas station and it's held up flawlessly.

People like to crap on them, but everyone I know who has a Predator (inverter) has been happy with it. My dad used to run the camper on 2 Honda 2000s paralleled to each other, but he now has a 3500 Predator that he uses and has had zero issues. My uncle runs his on the same generator and has been happy. Some people I work with have different sizes they use at deer camp and also have no issues.

If you can afford a Honda, I'd always recommend going that route (especially for an inverter), but you can get more wattage for the money with the Predator if that's how you choose to go.

If you're wanting something to run most of your house, I'd recommend a Duromax dual fuel of at least 13,000 watts. Dual fuel would allow for propane to be an option, and you can even buy a kit to make it run off of natural gas (at a reduced wattage) so you have even more fuel options.

I am guessing they took the outage map down because it made it really easy for criminals to target specific addresses that were without power and told them how long an address would be without power. The map updates automatically from smart meters so keeping it current it isn't a challenge.

You can still access info on your account by logging in even though their text and email system seems backed up (probably because they encouraged everyone to sign up for that service and it got overwhelmed by too many users.)

They should just make the map data less granular but still provide regional info to everyone.

They took the outage map down because it was crashing under the load of the number of people trying to see when their power would come back on.

+1

Funny to see extension cords running across the street. One of my neighbors across the street let me use his portable generator for the extra week we didn't have electricity after they got it.

My brother is a lineman, and he and I have had this discussion before, but still drives me nuts.

We don't have a transfer switch on our power box, so no way to hook up generator. We could do the fridge I guess, but I think the food is lost anyway.

I imagine every lineman's truck has gps on it (or at least the foreman's company phone has a tracker). Couldn't Centerpoint have a tracker map showing locations of this in real time? At least we could see where they are located and how many are out there working. Would help with communications.
Decent idea in theory. I have to imagine their contractors don't want their locations broadcast publicly because there will undoubtedly be crazies who go out and harass them.

I know a guy who has done line work in the past. Has some crazy stories about the kinds of confrontations he's been in in situations like this.

And before anyone says no one is dumb enough to blame an out of state lineman whose come in to get utilities on during situations like this one, I invite you to check Nextdoor or your neighborhood Facebook page and get back to me on that
