Exactly, they get their rocks off rooting for storms to be as bad as possible. And a lot of that bled into this thread over the weekend.

Houston got whacked with a strengthening at landfall high end Cat 1. I don't think it was your normal Cat 1 damage. So often larger storms are weakening at landfall as they entrain dry air off of the land mass and the wind gusts are at the lower end of expectations. I don't think that was the case here as it maintained it's hurricane status for what, 7 hours after landfall? Something like that.

But good on the pro mets who called the wind shear and dry air correctly. Beryl didn't get things lined up until the last few hours.

Re: Xfinity it goes out as soon as they start repairing lines. Like clockwork.

Have been on Genie since 5am and internet went down at 1pm. Front of neighborhood just got power back so will probably have internet back soon.

Latest fear porn talking point... Beryl could maybe continue to intensify to a weak Cat 1 AFTER landfall! It could be a hurricane maybe! Maybe y'all! Maybe!!!

The fear porn on this one has been insane, not to mention the fanboy stuff from supposed pro mets cheering this thing on like they've got a skirt and pompoms. I've got a meteorology degree too, and this thing never looked to me like something that was going to blow up and be a monster. Hopefully some on here have learned a thing or two from following this one.

Still think this was just fear porn?
Yep, from the people saying this was going to be a cat 3, absolutely. It was always on track to be a cat 1 and do cat 1 damage, and that's exactly what it did.
It was literally 1 millibar from a Cat 2.
Well, storms are categorized by wind, not pressure, and it's a far cry from the possible cat 3 you were selling the other night.
Hey I was joined by many professionals as you pointed out.

And I hope I was clear in that it was only POSSIBLE. If not, I certainly apologize. And I moronically didn't fully take into account the storm PTSD that some Houston residents rightly have.

Any pictures? That's our neighborhood and we left everything there

I know not the greatest pictures. From a video the neighbor sent.

Lucky to have not lost power and nothing but a few small branches down along the street in yards.

"How bad" a storm is obviously has an enormous personal element to it. From my perspective, this was pretty much nothing. Derecho was worse. It cleared out what Beryl would have blown away.

Very lucky and thankful as I see others got hit hard. Happy to help lend a hand in the neighborhood if anyone needs it.

Just walked past a CenterPoint truck parked at my street's end of the bridge where a guy was fully asleep in the driver's seat. So, I don't think I'm on the path to getting power back.

Still no power in the woodlands 77382. Neighbor has a Generac and he loaned me a cable. I hooked up my fridge, garage freezer, and a window unit for the bedroom. Good people.

Drove into Texas City to work at 3:00am. Rain didn't get real bad until I hit the Bucees for a few cans of Copenhagen and a couple red bulls. SHTF at work about 4:15am. Spend about 6 hours outside until close to 11. 0/10 would not recommend being outside in a refinery during a hurricane.

Yep, from the people saying this was going to be a cat 3, absolutely. It was always on track to be a cat 1 and do cat 1 damage, and that's exactly what it did. Power outages, tree damage, and flooding are all to be expected from a cat 1. What I'm talking about were the people out there talking about this storm having potential to come in as a "major," doing "catastrophic" damage, and the like. This storm didn't do any of that.
care to share examples? I didn't see that kind of info being pumped by anyone noteworthy.
There are plenty of examples in this thread, and they've been all over Twitter for days. I'm not going to aggregate them, but there were a ton of examples of pro mets saying this thing had "explosive" potential, how it was "worst case scenario," "potentially catastrophic," etc. If you haven't seen those, you probably weren't paying attention too closely. Either read up in this thread or go to the Storm2k forums and you'll see plenty.

My point is that it's irresponsible to put stuff like that out there when it is a low end outcome, and I think people should be more careful when doing that, especially when they're "pro mets."
I was speaking more to tv, twc, nhc, etc meteorologist, not Twitter idiots and people signing up for a username on an Internet forum.

Also, even if they were legit sources saying those things they at least prefaced it by saying potentially, which it did at times show potential as strengthing quickly.

Not saying you're wrong but that's part of the media nowaday. You have to weed through the bs yourself and use your own brain. I think the overall consensus of legit sources got the thing pretty much right for what they had to work with.

Also, better to over prepare and take caution than under prepare.

The guy you responded to was calling it fear porn because it might intensify to a cat 1. Well it did, and it did damage. Seems like the news was using facts to keep people prepared, but I guess you'll never admit that.

Seems Bridgeland was definitely hit or miss. Prairialand and creekland never lost it. I lost it in meridian from 8-2. Two sections north never lost it. Areas around pope and the treehouse still dont have it. We've had a number of my son's friends by that do t have power still.
