77009 update. Power on along parts of 11th. Boil House. 1891.

No power from Studewood East until St Marks. Line crews were working along 12th. Cortlandt. Columbia. Etc.

Still limbs hanging on lines all around Norhill historic district. We got a ways to go it seems.

Need to do more with maintenance of tree lines. Wouldn't fix everything, but would allow better response. A lot easier to do 365 days a year than 2 but there isn't much of a budget.
I have a friend who has worked for Alabama Power for 20+ years. This is what she does...goes out with line crews any time there is a major power outage due to weather damage. She's probably responded to every major weather event from TX to FL to parts of the northeast in recent history.

The trees/maintenance were a HUGE issue for us last year. There were trees and limbs everywhere after the storm, and they only did enough clean-up to restore power. We continued to have issues at least 1-2 times a week until November of last year. The pole that services my neighborhood had a large tree growing up around it that they didn't come remove until I complained multiple times (story actually wound up in the newspaper).

Anyone else hearing that Tomball ISD is contemplating ending the school year now and canceling the last week of school due to the power outages?

I called in a trim request about a month ago - which I do every year before hurricane season for overgrown areas on equipment. They came out and said it didn't need to be cleared. Guess what took out that entire line this week?

That CenterPoint is a for-profit company with a monopoly on our utilities is crazy to me.

They have no real incentive to harden the grid. Wind and storms are the primary risk to this area and yet I bet ever major storm sends power outages into the 100k+ range.

The reality is we probably will need the government to step in and force actual upgrades. This means a concerted effort to bury lines and make actual changes to avoid these going forward.

We did the same thing behind our place once until the tree finally arced and caught fire.

Another point...don't let the media tell you everything is bad and everyone hates everyone else...what I have seen in my neighborhood (bridgeland)...that isn't the case at all

Same…we live close to you. My only gripe is how awful some people are at intersections with light outages. Has really grinded my gears a couple of times.

Don't be all uppity. Just because half of Houston drivers can't figure out who's turn it is to go or how to start rolling forward in anticipation of their turn. Doesn't mean you should complain.

Some dumb biotch almost hit me because she didn't think she needed to stop. She made sure to honk her horn and give me the finger. Proceeded to watch her go through the next light without even tapping the brakes and almost tbone someone in that intersection.

I just talked to Center Point about a facility that we have down. We have been down since the storm happened and this is a pretty important facility. They are telling me they have damage to 345KV, 138KV, 69KV, and substations. They are doing their best to bring back power in the areas where it is possible. In areas where it is substation fed by the transmission mentioned above, they advised it could be a week or more.

As all of you up there know, the damage is more like a hurricane than a localized storm. We are importing diesel out of San Antonio to keep our facility up and it could be a while before we are back.

Not posting this to scare anyone, but to warn that this could be a extended event so you need to prepare accordingly.

This will be common for a lot of people that had power restored. They are having to do switching on circuits to feed certain areas and then do repairs in other areas. Should not be long term, but it allows them to do repairs to back feed areas.

They are on chamboard

Saw those trucks, no one was in them though. Still lots of wires on the ground on Brinkman between Durham Elementary and Pinemont. The lines that are still up there are holding up trees, it's a mess

Because I feel for my fellow Ags going through this, let me give this a shot.

  • 345KV transmission is the backbone of a electrical system (Voltages can be higher but I think CP has 345)
  • 138KV is transformed down from 345KV in a switching station
  • 69KV is further transformed down
  • All of these transmission elements feed into substations which further transform it down to a distribution voltage. I am not sure what Center Points distribution voltage is, but it is probably 34.5KV or 29KV.
  • The distribution is the lines you see driving down the road going into your neighborhood or feeding commercial businesses
  • Due to the interconnection of this system you can have absolutely clear distribution lines, but no power to the substation from transmission (see above) you are fooked.
  • If, as most are, the substation is loop fed then you can feed electricity from different directions and isolate damaged areas.
  • Transmission is not easy or quick to repair
  • If a substation is radially fed (one transmission source) then you have no power until that transmission element is repaired, you are fooked. Rare unless you are in some rural our outlying area.

Most folks should get restored within the next 24-36 hours. Some folks will be down for a long time. I am drinking also after watching the Aggie game, and I am sure I have missed a nuisance that some damn engineer will correct, but that is the long and the short of it.

Our facilities are transmission fed, so we are extra fooked.

Hope that helps.

So having a bunch of those really tall metal towers go down within a mile of my house isn't a great sign? Can they temporarily bypass trouble areas?

Unfortunately, that depends. It is definitely not a good thing. I do not have a one line of how your house is fed, but Center Point also has a lot of substation damage.

Utilities tend to also run distribution and transmission in the same easements, so it could be either that are causing your problems.

I worked for utilities for 22 years and now I am on the customer side. The absolute truth of the matter is that nobody knows at this point what the outage duration's will be. Even in this day and age, people have to go out and put eyeballs on it to get an idea. Utilities try and restore as many customers as possible at the beginning of an outage event. They then run down the one's and twos that are still out after that.

I really wish I could provide more concise information, but I am not sitting in CP's system operations. This is a utilities nightmare.

Power is back on in my area of 77008. 48 hours after this storm given the magnitude of destruction is quite impressive.

No problem. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them. I really do feel for you guys, but I also feel for the utility folks who I know are going their best to get the power back on.

I was out at my house for 84+ hours for Uri and I know how frustrating it can be. Good luck and look out for you and yours.

I just heard the same thing. Moms social media a blaze.

Wouldn't surprise me. Then again he could have been tired of Karen harassing him and gave her a reason not to ask every hour.

During some major storms in the past, I had friends at Centerpoint or Reliant/NRG that I would text back and forth with while they were stuck at their control desks or whatever, and they really didn't know timelines or areas until infrastructure repairs were made or assessed. Nobody holds back info.

Facebook pages for neighborhood bars and restaurants are a good indicator of where power is back or not. Looks like a pretty quiet weekend.
