it's clear the kid's parents value hair over education.
While I agree with this statement, I still think it is a waste of time, energy, and political capital to go after hair length, no matter the color of someone's skin.
This is all a **** sandwich that never should have reached court.
As mundane as it seems, it's basically a situation where neither party would back down. The school district has picked this battle as one it is willing to go to the mat on and the kid/parents have picked it as one they won't back down on. In some parts it's called a pissing contest.
The school has set the standard they are willing to accept and the kid has opted not to comply. At this point, the court has ruled that the school is right. So the school can voluntarily give in and be accused of succumbing to the rule-breaker or they can hold their ground. At a time when everyone seems to be scared of negative attention the school has basically said they don't GAF, their rules are their rules. Follow the rules or don't, but they aren't changing the rules on a whim, so deal with the consequences if you don't follow the rules. Even if you don'[t agree with the school's position, there has to be some acknowledgement that they aren't willing to allow a kid to dictate their policy.
