Is this a good thread to state how the HEB Prime tomahawk and filet I grilled in my backyard on Saturday was on point?
I, myself, ordered grass fed. I never claimed to have any steak knowledge at all if you look back through this thread.Jock 07 said:
With so much beef knowledge why would you ever order anything grass fed?

Well we had dinner at B&B Friday night. We ordered Bacon 3 Ways and the Crab Cake for appetizers. We ordered Broccoli and Bacon Mac for the sides. For our steaks, she ordered the Wagyu Filet and I ordered the Wagyu Ribeye just to do something different. That was a huge mistake. I can absolutely say I've made way better steaks in my backyard. My ribeye had virtually no marbling (Wagyu is supposed to have more right?). We both ordered the steaks medium rare and they were cooked right. The steaks were just bad. I may eventually return but it'll be a while and next time I'll give their USDA Prime a chance. I think that's where I went wrong but I just wanted to try it. Outside of the steaks, everything else was great. The bacon was definitely my favorite. Her and I left after a $500 meal wishing we had went to Georgia James or Pappas.
I don't knock it. When you are someplace like Idaho or South Dakota and want a steak and all they have is grass-fed, you go with their grass-fed.rak1693 said:I, myself, ordered grass fed. I never claimed to have any steak knowledge at all if you look back through this thread.Jock 07 said:

Good ribeyes shouldn't be like that, the cheap ribeyes that your neighbor buys on sale, soaks in italian dressing, and throws on a gas grill...probably.gigemJTH12 said:
guess its more of a texture thing for me. I feel like ribeyes always have me chewing on fat.
If I'm buying, always a strip. I think it has the best of all worlds with regard to steak: flavor, marbling, texture. I wasn't going to go all "mouth feel" but a strip is what I feel a steak should be like.htxag09 said:Good ribeyes shouldn't be like that, the cheap ribeyes that your neighbor buys on sale, soaks in italian dressing, and throws on a gas grill...probably.gigemJTH12 said:

Personally, my preferred cut is NY Strip. Has marbling and flavor but not overly fatty or grisly. I think it also benefits greatly from dry aging.
My wife will always get the filet.
There is a reason why they have multiple cuts available.....despite what our resident steak experts say.

People soak steaks in Italian dressing? Wtf.
So you knew where you could allegedly have the best steak yet went somewhere else. Moron.rak1693 said:
Ribeyes tend to have more flavor (more marbling) but that's not to say that you can't have a great tasting filet. I've had a Bone-In filet and the regular filet from Bohanan's over the years and they were both incredible. Their ribeye is better but when you're at a place like that (best steakhouse in Texas IMO), everything should be good.

Nobody ever says they can make better kolaches in their backyard.
Considering Bohanan's is in San Antonio and not Houston...Moron.I Am A Critic said:So you knew where you could allegedly have the best steak yet went somewhere else. Moron.rak1693 said:

Everybody just got together and made kolaches???
This is a genius plan.

dough was pre made from scratch by host, oven heated, had bakery pens so we could mark ours, fillings in bowls, challenges to come up with best/most interesting combos ...
the oven was pretty much going non stop, but then the drinks were too.

I miss my grandma's kolaches. Poppyseeds were my favorite, then cream cheese.
Bummer part is my mom can't make them as well as her mom could. Maybe that >65 year old clay mixing bowl grandma used.
Damn it, now I'm hungry for a kolache.
Need some assistance y'all. Closest to grandmas I've been able find around here are in Brenham. Anyone know where some good ones are sold in the tine?
