Ultimately, all of these places serve similar meals and everybody is pretty much ordering the same things no matter where you go. You'll get yourself the ribeye, the Mac and cheese with some seafood in it, the potatoes with loads of butter or oil in them and the buttered down green because your wife needs a vegetable. You'll get the crab cakes or oysters to start and split some sort of dessert and have a wine or cocktail.

Pappas is really not that different than Capital Grill which isn't that different from your precious Killens in Pearland.

Is Lynn's steakhouse still open? Haven't been in 12 years or so but that place used to be incredible. Weird location and building but amazing food and service

I had a gift card someone gave me to Saltgrass and got their filet. One of the worst steaks I've had in my life. Tasted like it was left in a Sous Vide way too long and absolutely no seasoning of any kind.
At least it was at Saltgrass. Ordering a filet at a high end place is like eating Diet Ben and Jerry's.
Filet is the boneless, skinless chicken breast on white bread of steaks.

So do you guys just skip the filet side on you porterhouse?

Open? Yes. I went there for the first time 14 years ago. I agree that it was a great place. I took my wife there 7 years ago on a Saturday night. It was a depressing, empty dining room with mediocre food and service not anywhere good enough for how not busy it was. I should say that I'm grading
based on their high price. At their level you just can't slip. Won't return.

If you go to any decent steakhouse they're overcharging for small cuts of meat. So the meat sweats are a non issue…..

I've always enjoyed Flemings. It may be a notch below Pappas, V&A, etc but every time I've been my steak has been perfect. Can't say the same for Killens. Been 3 times and each time the steak was over cooked. Not ever going back.

RC Ranch Wagyu steaks.

The environment / energy much more fun than going to Pappas steakhouse too

Some dude made a comment about a place he's never been to in terms of how good the food is. That's not a hill, that's just calling a spade a spade.

And while the places all may serve the same general fare....there are differences in the quality, service, ambiance, etc. that makes each different than the others.

Why is that so hard to fathom?

Most of these places serve the same meat from the same distributor.

I have heard good things about the steak at Dmarcos but I have never tried it.

Killens STQ has turned into the wife and I's favorite place in town when going out for a "fancy" dinner.

Steaks have always been excellent, sides are great, and their other dishes on the menu are excellent. Semi casual atmosphere as well compared to Pappas.

Anybody ate at Brennan's lately? How are the steaks there? I've always wanted to go but the wife isn't a huge fan of seafood so I'm curious how the beef they serve stacks up for the price?

Mediocre food.
Agree with the awesomeness of the setting, but I gotta disagree with the food assessment. They only serve CAB beef and not USDA Prime, so it's not going to be the best steak experience. But the huge pork chop is one of the best I've ever had, the chicken fried steak is top-notch, and sides and appetizers are great.

Anthonie's is only open for dinner, but I've hosted three separate private lunch meetings for clients and referral partners there and the food has been a big hit. If you haven't been, it's a place you ought to try…

Yes there are marginal differences in all of these places but more than any other type of restaurant, they all have the same beats and offer the same things.

This is why I advocate looking at the menu then choose that way. I really like the menu at Georgia James so right now it is my favorite in Houston. But I'm under no delusions that it is because they are offering quality a cut above the others… it is just because I think the menu is fun. I've also gone to Pappas Bros with my wife and the deciding factor was my wife wanted their Pecan Pie dessert or to B&B because I wanted to try their bacon appetizer. Both were outstanding meals but the point is that's how truly marginal the differentiators are between most of these places in this thread.

It's perfectly defensible to assume Killens in Pearland isn't heads and tails better than closer options without driving out to try it which is another way of saying what was said.

That was my impression from my one experience years ago as well. Underwhelmed. I did undergrad at Sam though so I always had an attachment to the place for nothing more than the collection of Sam Houston memorabilia.

Was actually my first and only time there so can't comment on how they've been in the past. All I know is they charged high end prices for Applebee's quality.

Do not do Mastro's. Our experience was horrible. Even if we had paid half of what we did. Although it provided us with good laughs during and after. Not sure if it was just a bad night but my steak was overcooked and tough as hell and I couldn't stop laughing at how bad it was at times...was hard to keep a straight face when waiter came over to ask us how everything was but we told them it was good. People watching is incredible though.

Pappa's and Del Frisco's are the safest bets imo.

You should have said something if the steak wasn't good or cooked right. They take that kind of stuff very seriously.

My wife and I were at Capital Grille and they got our steaks cooked backwards. Her filet was cooked medium rare and my ribeye was cooked medium. When the waiter came by to ask how our steaks were, I mentioned they were good but the doneness was backwards. He looked shocked, and they came and took all of the food off of our table...sides as well. The manager came over and apologized profusely while comping a bottle of house wine to have because of their mistake. We kept telling him it was OK and they didn't have to do anything, but he insisted a mistake like that wasn't acceptable.

They brought out new steaks, sides, etc, and the manager was there to make sure they were cooked to our liking, and they were. When we got the bill, they even comped the dessert.

It was a minor mistake, but they went above and beyond what I ever would have imagined or expected, and we left very impressed by the seriousness they have for the little things. Honestly, my steak was fine but a little over cooked for my liking, but the 2nd was perfect.
