We went to B&B and I was not impressed with the steak. Prefer Vic and Anthony's to Pappas but both were good. I've never been to Georgia James. Hard pass on not being able to park there.
V&A's used to be my favorite, but my wife and I went there for my birthday this year and the steak didn't impress me like it has in the past, or like ones at other steakhouses. Everything else was fantastic, but the lack of the steak wowing me kind of ruined it. I don't know if it was a bad night or what. Our anniversary is in a couple months, so we'll probably go back to Pappas or go to B&B's again since we've been there once.

It's all relative. If you live anywhere south of houston you'd say the opposite, like the poster you're relying to. I live in houston, I'd like to try killens but haven't and probably won't because I can go to several options that are on par or better in a quarter the time. Or I can just take an Uber for less than $10 if I know we'll be drinking a couple bottles of wine.
Yep. I'm on the northside, so anything west or south probably isn't happening due to having to pass by downtown to get to it. There's also a couple of spots in The Woodlands that is a half hour from the house thanks to the GP.

Edit...there's apparently a Killen's in The Woodlands. Didn't know that. Ok, we may try that one.

Outback or Saltgrass. Extra ketchup

I had a gift card someone gave me to Saltgrass and got their filet. One of the worst steaks I've had in my life. Tasted like it was left in a Sous Vide way too long and absolutely no seasoning of any kind.
At least it was at Saltgrass. Ordering a filet at a high end place is like eating Diet Ben and Jerry's.

Is it better than the one in San Antonio? We ate at the Palm in SA and while the dinner was fine it was some several notches below the dinner we had at Bohanan's not two night prior. Similar money but Bohanan's was SIGNIFICANTLY better. I won't be back to the Palm in SA.

So.....you haven't been to Killens, but you know there are several options on par or better closer?

Does not really compute, but whatever floats your boat.

I guess I don't get the "XXX place is too far to drive" when you are talking about an every now and again or special occasion meal. We aren't talking about a 4 hour trek to the hellhole DFW or something, we are talking about 45 mins, maybe an hour max. Just seems like a petty cop-out to me on not going somewhere not in the regular rotation, but that's me.

So….now you're saying that you don't get the some place is too far to drive argument for a rare special occasion meal but your initial argument for killens was "without the downtown traffic"?

Don't knock it.
I know places like this aren't even in the same league as Pappa's or B&B, etc. - but won't lie, last time I went to Outback (gift card from my crew, needed to use it), I ordered a ribeye. Damn thing was really good and I'd eat one there again without thinking about it.

I made a comment that it doesn't have the same traffic, never made a comment that I wouldn't go specifically because of it. Reading. Hard stuff.

Difference is....I won't say a place is on par or better than another place if I've never actually been to that other place to compare them. So, basically you are making a judgement call based on absolutely no real information, or pure hearsay. Hey, it works for you - party on with it.
htxag09

I'll admit I'm making a judgement call on hearsay, but really not going to get too upset about it. Hell, this whole thread is someone getting a recommendation on hearsay as is every other thread like it.

Point is I really, really enjoy pappas. And as you said, these are expensive, rare meals. I've tried venturing out, maestros, B&B, v&a, 1/5 (gj), and just about every time I've been disappointed and didn't think the meal was as good as pappas even though, in most cases, it was more expensive. I guess I wasn't disappointed in B&B but still didn't think it was quite as good.

So, this year when our anniversary comes around I can call an Uber, spend $5-10, to get to pappas, have a meal that I know I'll enjoy and get new wines from a pretty extensive (albeit overpriced) wine list, and Uber back home. Or I can drive 30+ minutes to a restaurant that's an unknown (for me) but seems most people I know that have been have said it's good but not as good as pappas or B&B. As well as having to take into consideration the 30+ minute drive back home.

We made the journey out to Killens a couple years ago, and the food and service were both good, but nothing special. Im in Oak Forest, so for me, it's not worth driving either all the way around the loop or through downtown to get to.

Like what Htxag09 said, just about every time we try a new steakhouse, afterwards we both say that we should have just gone to Del Friscos.

This is another discussion but Bohanan's may be the best steakhouse in the state (IMO) so it's not surprising that Palms was notches below it. There would never be a doubt in my mind if I was looking for a steakhouse in SA. My wife and I ate there the night I proposed after the proposal.

Well I'm glad to hear it because the difference was stark to everyone in our party. Again, not that the meal at the Palm was bad, it was just nothing close to Bohanan's.

I'm ruined on steakhouses. I'm a firm believer in the "my back yard is better" cliche RE steaks, but I'll gladly pay for another meal at Bohanan's.

I read their Wikipedia and it looks like their former owner bought them out of BK and his son and SIL are running the company. Based on their website they are based jn some non-descript building In Rice Military.

It was high living as a kid when we got to go to K-BOB'S.

Went to the KBOB's in Durango in 1999 after an 8 day trek in the Weminuche Wilderness. Stomach had shrunk significantly but my eyes hadn't. Sure wish I had some of those all you can eat beef ribs now.

So do you guys just skip the filet side on you porterhouse?

Or do you subscribe to the disproved flavor transfer idea of cooking on the bone (disproved by the A&M meat science team amongst others)?

True that. Was there this past weekend. Steak was wayyyy below average. Saltgrass makes a better steak for half the price. Although the goat cheese appetizer dip was good.

Another vote for Doris, especially for something different. Bone-in filet was outstanding.

Also, big plug for Turner's- our favorite spot in town. Bone-in ribeye, fried quail with Tabasco maple syrup drizzle, wedge salad with pork belly and rare blue cheese…..Robert Del Grande is an odd duck, but there's a reason he's a James Beard award winner and Annie has been a mainstay. Only ~16 tables so reservations are a ways out.
