Problem is, the choices are giant ****** and turd sandwich. Though that's usually the case

I'm gonna guess it's all her fangirls praising her for being a strong Latina and standing up to the old white men in government trying to push her around?

I triggered one on my neighborhood board because I used her first name instead of her last.

The crazy thing to me is shutting down in person schools impacts minorities and poor communities way way way more than others. You 100% know if Republicans were doing it they'd be screaming racism and disparate impact.

I'm not defending Hidalgo - I think her leadership has been terrible through this. But in fairness, black and Hispanic families have been hit with COVID much harder than any other. I'll bet the majority of black and Hispanic parents want their kids to do online learning for safety, because they're scared, both of their kids getting sick and of them bringing it home to Pop and Abuela.

Their fear is not rational - kids of all socio-economic groups are probably safer in school than at home in terms of exposure - but it's real and they have experienced COVID in their communities in much greater numbers. She is responding to that very real concern in her constituency, who have much more concrete and valid concerns than a suburbanite like me, whose kids will benefit unequivocally from being in school and face minimal to no risk.

I still don't like her.

Their concerns are completely invalid.

Kids are not at danger. All these fears and concerns about school are coming from teachers and officials like Lina doing their fear mongering. Hispanic, inner city, suburban, they're concerns are just not backed up by science.

The virus doesn't say 'Oh there's a Hispanic kid...Got em!'.

Yeah, sure that single parent who has to work every day and can't afford daycare or a nanny really wants their kid(s) home doing virtual learning.

Statistically that's not true. Hispanics are significantly more likely to get it and to have bad outcomes. The fear is as much about them bringing it home as it is about kids getting sick. It may not be fully reason-based but it's not all posturing. Parents can want their kids to be in school and also be genuinely scared that they will get sick and get the family sick.

Look, I'm not defending that point of view. I personally kids are a lot safer at school and are less likely to get the disease in a school setting, and therefore less likely to bring it home than running loose in the neighborhood. And Hidalgo and Turner and all the elected officials are endangering them by pushing this fear narrative instead of actually focusing on the science and legitimate risks. And Suburban Karens On Facebook and Twitter are just trying to feel like they're Doing Something because they're pretty useless in general, and they think social media actually matters.

Also likely they do not have the necessary resources at home as well.

Minorities are getting it bad because they live in multi generational homes, work essential jobs wear PPE and precautions are non existent, have a much higher rate of underlying conditions, and put off getting medical attention until it's too late.

NOT because of kids getting it or because it's a meany racist virus that has it out for minorities.

Agree completely, which is why the fear-mongering by our political leadership is so unconscionable. I am genuinely astonished by how many rational people I have heard plan to have their kids on online school because they're concerned about safety.

In the communities that have been hardest- hit already, there should be more effort made to explain how much safer school will be, instead of changing the narrative from hospitalizations to cases to positivity rate to cumulative totals so that the fear is always turned up to 11.

Can't scream this enough. This hurts our kids and Cities more then whatever you think of this virus.

ETA- this hurts our communities "exponentially." The kids not in school today as 2nd graders may seem harmless today, if you don't see what is next then you are a dumbass.

Agree completely. But if you're overweight, have underlying health conditions, work an essential job and live in a multi-generational home, maybe being a lot more scared of COVID is rational? Combine that with (probably) being less educated, and your elected leaders are constantly pushing fear porn, you worry about your kids more than the science would warrant.

I think you were very rude in saying 'dumbass' - needed to go further and use some real bad words.

Those thinking school age children are capable of online learning need to be slapped with reality. It may work for your snowflake, but the general population is going to created a big problem for society.

exactly.

Someone made a dumbass flippant remark when I suggested this last week. He/she said conservatives cry about teachers foisting Marxist ideals on kids through public education.

As long as education is put into a state of confusion meaning it either doesn't happen in person or is constructed to enable cultural warfare, libs are happy either way.
