We used to not close schools because of lightening, cold weather or the threat of rain too. Now anytime the temp gets near freezing here, schools close. What used to happen versus the over-reaction of today's social media world can't really be compared, because honestly there is little logic in things anymore.

In the DFW area there were gas curtailment days where schools would be closed due to the demand on the energy grid/system on really cold days. This was sometime in the late 80's

The National Guard they are bringing in is the Civil Support Team. We've actually had part of the team there since Tuesday . More of us are headed down this afternoon.

I'm going to pop in one more time on this thread. Things are bad there. Instead of a fire burning off all the hydrocarbons they now have a swimming pool of chemicals (Benzene which is alot of it) now exposed to the elements, and no real way of cleaning it up without exposure to contract personnel. Personally I wouldn't go swimming in the channel anytime soon either .

Seems like sounds advice. But some channel redfish are always a treat.

This year my wifes school did jcackass. I had to listen to her complain about it because it added a day to the calendar. Dont act like schools are the same now,as they were 20,years ago, because they arent.

There should be reasonable concern with this event. Not talking Facebook stay at home mom concerns. It's not over, weather they tell you or not, this will be a long lasting Impact for yrs years to come.

It will be a slow burn at this point. It will come as early as this summer when people under the cloud start to notice their grass is dying, then trees browning and dropping leaves. These are the tell tell signs you have a problem on your hands.

Why don't they just move to protect the remaining tanks and burn off the rest of the pygas? Shouldn't combustion consume the majority of the benzene? Is it just an optics issue?

I am a proponent of the United States Chemical Safety Board so you can take that opinion elsewhere IMHO. Company investigator's Stake Holders are internal council, 3rd party council, and the board of directors. Many companies will run two investigations, one for privilege and one as required by PSM.

CSB Stake Holders also include the public and the injured. It is important that root causes and investigations be shared publicly and across industry. The CSB investigations are not subject to FOI requests and CSB investigators are also not subject to subpoena or expert witness.

This is not the super bowl for the CSB, go to their page of completed investigations to learn more. Their challenges as an agency are well documented but are definitely not a result of the office of investigations.

I've never dealt with CSB investigations so I can't speak to how they are conducted, however, their investigative reports coupled with animated video reenactments of incidents are outstanding. I can watch their videos as a layman and come away with an understanding of what exactly went wrong in an incident and what safeguards failed or were not in place. For field based operators and technicians this type of info is invaluable and it makes our industry safer.

That was at 4:30ish am. Oxy got high VOC readings so they sheltered and Lyondell followed suit. It was lifted shortly after.

They just had a press conference this morning w/ ITC, EPA, DP Mayor, etc. - pumping resumed around 10am and they gave a timeline of 8-12 hours barring any changes to get it emptied. From what I understand the concern is the pumping might cause the foam layer to disrupt and release more Benzene, but they have a **** ton of foam on hand to add as necessary.

If I were betting I would take the over on their timeline
