When I was involved the best players never even played in the Little League league. They were in Baseball USA league or another where 12-year old rules were real baseball with leads, steals, pick-offs, throw downs and all that not allowed in Little League play.

Anybody got a kid on this team? I'm curious if the Kugle kid's parents are both Aggies.

Mom Kugle is an Aggiie '91, not dad. I dont think any of team parents post here, but apparently several know the families. ("Username checks out" on how long I've known Mrs Kugle.). I'm pretty happy for those kids and their families having a great time this summer. I'm planning to go back up Monday and Wednesday.

Jaded much? While I have some of the same concerns about youth sports, especially re my own kids, these are actually some pretty great kids and parents. If you spent some time with them I think they'd change your minds, last 2 posters. As for me, I'm not gonna defend or debate youth sports here, just enjoy some local kids having a great summer of baseball.

Yup.

I was adamantly opposed to my boys (one just turned 8 and the other will be 4 soon) playing select before jr high. But some poor experiences with the local league and discussing the matter with some people who's opinions I respect has altered that a bit.

That being said, there will be no year-round focus on a single sport for my boys until late HS if ever.

It's important to keep things in perspective but I strongly believe the life lessons found in team sports can be tremendously positive in adult life.

I'd never recommend year long anything. Have them take a break and play something else as well.

Always root for the texas teams especially if they are local!

Don't really care if the all star team is mostly set before the season and the kids play select ball too. I wish Katy would do the same, our little league usually gets stomped...

That's exactly what I said. Nothing year round or single-sport focus.

Select ball has absolutely ruined kids sports IMO, I know it's here to stay - but I wish it would die off.

Hope the local LL team does well, I always root for the local teams and kids.

Yes, Wednesday at noon central on ESPN. Winner goes to LLWS in Williamsport. Against Oklahoma (Tulsa).

Oklahoma has burned its best and another of its best pitchers. POLL has Selvaggi and all other pitchers available. The plan is probably to have Selvaggi start and pitch far far into the game.

hate this format of double elimination until you get to the championship game. Yes I know Okie has played extra games and burned pitchers, but still elimination should only occur after losing two games.

Yep. It actually punishes the winner's bracket champion and is really kind of stupid.

My kid played in this league. They play a full season on their various teams and are then selected. There is a "hat team" representing a larger group and a subset of those kids is the traveling team. In POLL it can get a bit political. This is not a year round select team. That's BS.

How do you explain that all of the kids on the team except one played for the Houston Royals Gold Select team during the winter before LL even started?

and the head coach for the Royals is the same as the PO team....

wish Katy would get their stuff together like these guys, Lamar et al have been doing it for years....

I saw that too. That being said I know my son's 9U team coach has mentioned that it would be fun to drop into LL at some point and make a run at the world series. Apparently it is fairly common practice.

so they all play on a select team in the summer and fall. That is SOP for every little league all star team that is making a run in this tournament.

These kids were not all on the same little league team during the regular season. Little League has no issue with kids playing select during the summer and fall, so why do you?

The thing is that those kids are going to get split up into different teams in that specific LL.

So you could have all these kids playing on one select team the rest of the year but then when the LL season rolls around they have to do try-outs and a draft and the kids are split up onto different teams. Now, having had their select experience those kids may be the best in the league and the best on each respective team and then get voted to the All Star team.

In the past, I think the coach of the team who won their LL season is usually the coach of the All Star team. But that may have changed.

I don't have a problem with it, which I've already said twice, I wish my kids LL would do the same.

My issue is the guy saying that they select the team after the season which is not really true, they were selected way before the season even started. Just shedding some light on how things really work.

When I played LL back in 08-09 we won our district title (nasa, baytown, galveston, santa fe, bayside) and lost to Post Oak in Sectionals. They won state as 11s that year in 08. In 09 we lost in the District Championship to League City who lost to First Colony in Sectionals who lost to that Bridge City team that had Chase Shugart on it.

Anyway we all played on different teams during the regular season but we pretty much knew who was going to be on the allstar team. All but one kid, who was 11, that should have been on our team made the years team. The politics of LL cost us having that 11 because some board member had a kid that was 12 and though they deserved to be on the team. 10 years later and that 11 they wouldnt let on the team was just drafted out of San Jac as a pitcher and the board members kid was a 4 year band member in high school. Not having that kid may have cost us a run at Williamsport.

Anyway, my father played college baseball with Reagan Buckley. He says he was a really good catcher but cant believe the guy has made a living giving lessons and camps at Post Oak Little League.

good form - you don't dog pile up 8-0 in a regional

and the POLL team is really good this year - the Moms are frankly not up to the usual standard that league puts out.

These kids are selected from their respective teams. Not a predetermined team, but they almost all have personal coaches and may play some select team ball.

Wrong....they are a select team that plays LL at 12U so they can have this select team makeup their All-Star team. They all do it.

If these kids are on one team all LL season long and preordained to be the All Star team that's pretty BS IMHO.

Makes all the other teams in the league nothing more than cannon fodder and they don't really learn.

And that scenario is not what happened
Good to know. Because the scenario sosolisk described is BS.
You have no clue. The scenario that I described is 100% accurate. A separate poster confirmed above. I know they didn't all play on the same LL team but they are all on the same select team and this was the all-star team already "selected" at the start of the season. Same scenario for all of these good LL all star teams.

Like all of the All Star teams that are still alive at this point, this is a select team of ringers that were already the "all star team"before the season even began.

Nothing wrong with this approach as every top all star team does the exact same thing.
have these kids only played in POLL for just this season only? If that is the case then your description of them being "ringers" would be accurate. This is exactly what Pearland did back in the day before they had to split along geographic lines. Their 12 year old all star team had no resemblance to the previous years 11 year old teams.

However if these kids have played in POLL for multiple years, then they are not "ringers". They're kids who were recognized as being talented early on in their careers and the dads formed a "select team" to play in the summer and fall....and the parents spent a boatload of money on lessons, tournament fees, etc.

Update: Just researched this and no, these kids are not "ringers" - they have been in the league for years - they won state as 10's and won sectional as 11's.
