Negotiating Prices at Gallery Furniture

Hey guys,

I know you can talk these guys down, but I was just kind of curious what the range is. I'm moving into a new house in about a month, and I'm probably going to put most of my current bedroom set in the guest room. I want to upgrade to a King bed and mattress, but I may buy close to a full set (bed frame, night stands, chest).

Anyway, what's a good target percentage to shoot for when haggling with the Gallery Furniture guys? I'm sure the markup on the mattresses are ridiculous, but what about the hardwood bedroom furniture?

Any help would be appreciated, and likely "Save (me) Money!" - At least more than Mack will if I pay full price.

Oh and just for reference. This is the set I'm looking at. I'd guess they just mark everything up, but in case material matters..

It's just the link to the bed, but the other pieces are down below.

I start below what I'm willing to pay and walk if they won't get anywhere close. You'll be surprised how bad those sales guys want the sale when you say "hmm...OK...that's more than I can do. Thanks anyway!". You need to find the model or something similar elsewhere so you know what it's worth though. Don't be afraid to go online. It'll be a lot cheaper. Mac has a LOT of overhead.

I have had better luck at Star Furniture. Maybe it is my taste but I like the styles they carry, their sales staff is more friendly/knowledgeable, the quality is good and their starting price is less than what I can talk Gallery down to.

As for a mattress go check out Texas Mattress Makers before you buy.

I sure hope you can talk them down from $1800 for a bed.

I've never bought anything from GF and have only looked there a couple times, but I've found them to be overpriced and lacking on quality for the price they charge.

My experience has been that the floor sales team won't budge much and is more than happy to see you leave a deal hanging. I was looking at hardwood tables, and was not willing to pay $2k for some teakwood nonsense. The best they could do was $100 less which was still overpriced. I would up going to E&G Amish and designed exactly what we wanted in solid oak, and spent the same money.

Do big stores like Starr and GF even really do negotiations? I've never bought anything there but when I've been in the Galleria store it was the lowest pressure, "let me know if you need anything" furniture store I've ever been in.

What part of town are you moving to. I'd highly recommend Tista's Furniture in Katy. We got the same couch there that we saw at Gallery for much less. We paid about $800 for a kind bed and their mattress prices are crazy low. They don't have the inventory, so everything is made to your specs/ordered. Great people too. They did a lot for us after we had to purchase all new furniture after Harvey.

If you spent the same amount on an oak table as Gallery had on a teak table, you got ripped off. Teak is about 5 times as expensive as oak.

I had no clue that GF's prices were that high. Now I feel bad for *****ing at my wife for spending that much on a bed from Z Gallerie.

I bought a recliner from there back in November of last year and I got ~$300 off of the sticker price. Most furniture stores ALWAYS negotiate.

Bel is the worst. I tried buying from them once. No one knew what they had or anything about it. I was on a tight budget and bought a 3 piece living room from them. After a month they never delivered it and I had to go in the back room and fight with the manager to get my money back. Hands down the worst experience I have had furniture shopping.

Death does not scare me. What I am worried about is spoiling my children. I don't want 'em to be the kind of people who never work. Live off their trust funds. Who buy their wooden furniture. I will leave my children fifty dollars a piece for the cab home from my funeral and a steak dinner. End of discussion.

They were "Going out of business" for a number of years when they were over on 99. Didn't know they were still around but see they moved over off Highway 90.

They will negotiate. I've bought a few pieces from them at different times and every time they tell me "they don't negotiate." I leave them my number and tell them to call me if they can do better and then I leave. They always call within 15 minutes or so. Are you getting 20% off? Not likely, but I've always been able to get enough off that I feel good about the deal.

You should be able to get that bed, 2 nightstands, a dresser/chest, and mirror for no more than $3500 at any reputable store in town. I would shoot for closer to $3000, and that's assuming the drawer glides and drawers are of high quality.

Gallery had some bull**** that they called teak then because I could easily indent and scratch it with my fingernail.

Moved into a new house year and a half ago and did extensive shopping both online and most places in Houston.

Gallery furniture was twice as expensive as almost every other place.

Well then they did a good job disassembling it, putting it back into the plastic, boxing it, and making it smell brand new.

Don't finance. That's their windfall.
"Gallery Furniture will enslave you, honey".

But, local hero, blah, blah.
Per their marketing plan.
I quit their "method" when Mack berated a young female associate into following me WAY into the parking lot, after I said "no, thanks". ANY serious furniture shopper can do better than GF. Period. But aren't you willing to buy from your (carefully managed) hero after all he's done...just for you? His corporate marketing "partner" needs to know.
What's 25-29% effective interest among friends/heroes?
C'mon. Shop around.

Pottery Barn has almost an identical-looking bed (it only has two panels/windows instead of four) for $2100 - but it's currently 25% off, so it's $1575. If you buy the matching end tables and dresser, you'll get 30% off everything (discount is based on the amount you spend). PB can be expensive, but their sales are usually pretty good deals. Idk if Gallery negotiates, but I certainly wouldn't pay more for that bed that what you could get it for at Pottery Barn.

I am personally a huge fan of used furniture bought in auctions and estate sales. I find that you get better furniture for about 10% to 50% of what you would pay new. My entire house with the exception of the couch was bought used.

Just leave it in your cart and they will send you a 40% off coupon. I do it all the time.

Consignment stores are great, too. There are some really good ones for furniture in the Houston area (Still Goode in Spring is excellent). You just have to be patient, if you're looking for something specific. Unless it's upholstered, furniture is one of those things I try to avoid purchasing new.

That's kind of what I thought, that Gallery would negotiate on the financing but not if you were paying up front.

Teak is one of the softest woods available.

Where do yall recommend going for a sectional couch? I am a little worried about the quality of what I would get at a place like Rooms to Go. La-z-boy is currently having a sale. Has anyone had good luck with La-z-boy couches? I will have to check into Tista's.

Good thread!

Go to Living Designs Furniture, which is owned by the same people as Texas Mattress Makers and next door to their Navigation store. We bought a LR set from them last year for about half of what Mack would have charged.
