We've had good luck with Bassett. Nice stuff and you can design a lot of pieces as far as color, finish, etc. to exactly what you want.

It's not cheap but it's cheaper than GF and higher quality stuff.

Death does not scare me. What I am worried about is spoiling my children. I don't want 'em to be the kind of people who never work. Live off their trust funds. Who buy their wooden furniture. I will leave my children fifty dollars a piece for the cab home from my funeral and a steak dinner. End of discussion.
Okay....

Update:

I ended up buying a bunch of stuff from Pottery Barn. Basically worked out to where I spent about 40% less.

the more you buy, the more theyll budge. Ive found they dont negotiate on a single piece, but almost always do on whole rooms.

We've bought a couple small pieces at GF and they wouldn't negotiate at all. I've heard stories of Mac chasing people out of the store himself bc he gets insulted if you try to negotiate. YMMV

We bought at Rooms to Go last time we needed some furniture, and it was a great experience. Third Coast's wife at Ethan Allen is another great source for solid furniture.

I've bought 3 separate times at GF. A desk, a couch, and a dining room table (no chairs). Each time, I've attempted to negotiate and they said they don't negotiate. I said fine, here is my number, call me if you can do better. The first two times, it was about 15 minutes before they called, the last time it was a couple of days. I did not finance.

How far did they move? I've already bought my stuff, but good to know a target %.

+1 for Basset. Got to design exactly what we wanted.

Every bit as Made in America as GF, but without the stupid parrots, overly pushy salespeople, and the price condescension rhetoric in the store. The fact that GF shoves the "we need to profit to employ American workers" bit to justify their crazy markups just bothers me.

I'm curious if anybody has gotten anything at The Dump?

Its been a few years, so I can't recall exact numbers. I know it was at least a few hundred bucks each time though. It was enough to make me feel like I wasn't getting fleeced.

I have. Its real hit or miss, but they sometimes get some unusual pieces

I also like going to the star outlet stores if I'm just looking for one piece. we got our entertainment center there, brand new but was a discontinued style for about 40% off retail.

our couches are lay -z boy and they have held up well over the last 7 years. Fabric is starting to show some wear but the cushions are still firm.

Guess I'm not up on my Parks & Rec enough.

Here's to never buying anything again at Texas Furniture Hut in Cypress.

Up til now, they've been good to deal with. This time, special order (side) table was delivered after waiting 5 weeks, only for it to arrive with uneven legs! Now, waiting another 8 weeks for new one.

No apologies, compensation or service worth a $**t. Will tell everyone I can to avoid them.
