Nah, I just think it's stupid to spend MILLIONS chasing people around for a plant when HPD doesn't even have the resources to do real, basic, police work. Vehicle broken into? HPD can't/won't even drive out to look at it unless there is $5k+ in damages. Etc.

Sisters door kicked in Thursday night and she called at 6:30. They got there at 11:30...

You should step away from the ledge. The DA's office isn't going away. Crimes (that the majority of our voters decided are worth enforcing) will still be prosecuted.
With all due respect, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Because of straight ticket voting, it may not have mattered, but after her handling of PP Devon brought this on the department. She got what she deserved. Unfortunately it cost all the other people too.

To an extent, I agree.

The republican Pat Lykos did something very similar when she won office in 2008. Where was the outrage then? Different set of rules.

When Trump takes office he has the power to nuke every federal DA, and he will. There was pushback when Obama did it, but they're political appointments. Its great when your side wins, bad when it doesnt. And at the lower level of the counties I'd hope for more neutral people holding these positions, but it's just the way to goes.

Lykos was very aggressive and fired everyone who even said a nice thing about Kelly. But thats just the way of the world

Also, Lykos didn't have the same mass firings since a lot of chiefs quit and found other jobs before she got the chance. Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria, counties, as well as the US Attorney's office all got a lot stronger because of it.

Criminal prosecution isn't a water spigot you simply turn on and off. It is a trade learned from seasoned craftsmen where the intricacies can, in fact, mean life or death. Mistakes can cause murderers to walk free. There are truly evil people in the world and the barrier between them and normal people just got a whole lot thinner.

Ogg just fired all the most seasoned craftsmen with institutional knowledge of the trade that is there to protect everyone in Harris County. If you think this was a good thing or this happens with every changing of the guard, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Lykos fired about 8-10 prosecutors. Ogg quadrupled that and essentially eliminated the death penalty by getting rid of anyone who could have competently tried one.

I hope you aren't forced to turn to the criminal system for justice anytime soon. You won't get it, but hey, at least you have your weed.

Lykos fired 7 senior prosecutors and eliminated a total of 15. About 20 more quit under threat of being let go.

However you want to package what happened, well over 30 people were removed from office.

It sucks that experienced, dedicated people lost their job. But to act like this is going to have some drastic affect on violent crime in the city is perhaps taking it a little too far.

Since you are having trouble with reading I'll post this again, and even bold some important points:

Quote:

Sorry to disappoint some of y'all, but I don't smoke weed or do drugs. Even when I'm in places where it is 100% legal.

From my experience, a lot of old people can't separate "I don't do it" and "nobody should do it". Weed and drugs are a good example. I choose not to partake, but if someone else wants to, I'm not going to fight them to get them to stop. The war on drugs is a failure, and the only casualties are normal people. The cartels got rich. The government expanded like crazy, etc.

Another example would be the AR-15. I love my ARs. But I have older family and friends who, to this day, say things like, "Nobody needs 30 rounds to kill a deer, ARs should be outlawed!"

The next Republican DA candidate will have a similar stance on weed as Ogg. That's the most disappointing thing to me.

This

It sucks, but yes, that's what you do

These are political offices... getting fired at regime change time goes with the territory, especially if you support the winner's opponent

And believe me, I in NO WAY endorse Ogg

Far from it

Again, believe what you want. The true cost of this will be very tangible to the families of victims. You don't have to agree with me. It honestly doesn't matter what you believe. Just pray you don't have to turn to the criminal system to right a wrong anytime soon. You might find out the hard way what I have been trying to explain to you.

I think the larger point is being missed here...no one disputes the DA position itself is political, and that the DA has the power to fire ADAs. But the ADA positions should not be politicized, at least not to this degree. The DA's office is one of the last refuges of government where true believers in public service reside- unlike the bulk who are just there for the money/job security/politics. These people really have dedicated their lives to protecting the public. Getting rid of these true believers, whose abilities cannot simply be replaced, hurts the public in both the short term and long term. And as a true believer on the civil side, there's no way in hell I'd switch. My principles won't let me. I imagine it's the same for a lot of those fired ADAs.

When I say "politcal" I'm not talking about politcal leanings. I'm talking about loyalty

Gotta have it in that office

Could be any number of reasons they were fired.. loyalty could be at the top of the list...

You oppose the winner, expect to be fired

Can't have a pissed off cancer in the office, or a malcontent leaking info, or whatever

My brother in law is good friends with one of the guys that got canned. They were all pretty much the top performers. GLWS Kim Ogg. I think this will cost her down the road as roaming gnome mentioned. Ultimately I don't think she get re-elected the next go around.

I'm sorry to hear that about your friend, but it is way too early to know if she will get reelected. Harris county is getting Bluer by the day, and if she doesn't decent job in office, she should not have a problem in the primary

Also, everybody lamenting that all of this experience being purged, nobody knows who she is going to her. She might hire a bunch of former prosecutors who have plenty of experience themselves. People she knows from her days as a prosecutor, and also as a defense attorney.

The claim that she is going to fill her office full of newly graduated law students is unfounded
