I have also tried to force my love of watches off on my wife. It doesn't work. She lets me buy her expensive hand bags and that's it. She loves her Apple Watch, I have made peace with it

My wife is content to wear a Fitbit or a Citizen and spend $Texas on travel. I've tried to buy her jewelry, watches, or purses, and she's not interested. She'd rather take six vacations a year instead. It would probably be cheaper if she was into the other stuff…

Oris has ads all around Yankee Stadium, so I'd start there.

Oris has ads all over most/possibly all MLB stadiums this year. Which seems a bit weird but ok.

This eventually led to VJ gifting Boone one of their Carysfort Reef Gold Limited Edition watches one of 50 pieces. It is not only a special watch to Boone, but a strategic superstition in the dugout wearing it as a good luck charm each time a particular strong Yankee pitcher hits the mound. Boone explained: "I call it my 'Gerrit Cole watch'. I wear it every time he pitches. It's the ace show watch."

Good thing he wasn't wearing the muff-diving mermaid watch. Things might have gone very differently.

Well, I figured that there had to be at least one guy here that has managed to land a nice lady who'd appreciate a nice watch

My girlfriend has been very supportive of my watch hobby and I've been surprised at how well she's learned and remembered things about brands, watches, complications, etc. She seems to enjoy it, for the sake of me enjoying it.

She didn't often wear a watch - after she began getting somewhat interested in them she's occasionally wear an old quartz watch of her mother's that didn't even have a working battery.

For her graduation from OT school, I got her this Tissot. Y'all might remember me asking about options, because I was wanting to get it engraved for the occasion. I really struggled to find a women's mechanical watch in the style I wanted that didn't have a display caseback.

Finally it dawned on me - I could have the rotor engraved. I called around to watch repair places all around the state. As probably won't surprise you - there aren't many good ones anymore. So many places didn't know what I even meant by rotor, said it couldn't get be done, said only Tissot could do it. I guess now days these guys literally only know how to change a battery. Luckily after many phone calls, I finally found one that could do it. Then came the research for figuring out a replacement rotor for the stock movement. That took a lot of forum research, but finally got it.

She LOVED the graduation gift, and she wears it for dates or anytime we get dressed up. She comments on it a lot, shows it off. It was a $600 watch, but it means more to her than a Rolex and honestly when I finally was able to get the rotor engraved after weeks of research and time on the phone, I was probably more excited about this watch than watches that cost 10x more.

(I was about to post the picture of the engraved rotor, but I didn't want to explain to her why a bunch of creeps from TexAgs were suddenly stalking her social media)

You should never have to explain the value of a gift for someone you love to a bunch of message board bros. That is between you and her. Everyone else's opinion doesn't matter. That being said, it's a beautiful watch my friend.

Also, acquire all your fun and expensive toys now before you are married and have kids.

Trust me.

The explanation wasn't so much a justification - it was more an anecdote for our friend looking for his wife a watch. Showing that things we get worked up are typically not going to be what gets the ladies going - they want the thought behind it and the experience/moment.

And to your last point - I've echoed that time and time again. Currently stashing as much cash as possible in case we do wind up getting married, as the wedding watches I want to get figure to serve as my one big last watch blowout.

Same, but mine was a Rolex Datejust. I wore it for the afterparty. I wasn't going to embarrass myself by wearing it with a tux.
