Ulysse Nardin is an OG heavyweight that is respected but flies a bit under the radar mainly as they've gone towards the Hublot-Tag "skeletonize everything and add carbon fiber" trend towards sports watches. I still like a lot of their classical pieces, and the fact they've been making them for 180 years is awesome

I would say right now that Christopher Ward is setting the standard for microbrand success. They are popular and have carved out a nice niche in the lowest tier of the luxury market. Their prices are very affordable (comparatively) and you get brand recognition with a quality watch.

Ha yep, just the worst PS ever. Looks really sharp on wrist. Almost bought it on a trip to Italy when I was in travel mode. Wised up and slept on it, but haven't stopped thinking about it. It's a very sharp watch at that price point. I wouldn't buy at the 3100 retail mark, but it can be found for 1800-2200.

FC is a great brand as well, not a micro brand as they're owned by Citizen I believe, but known for making very high quality watches at a good price.
I prefer a dive watch over a racing inspired Chrono. The CW is a heck of a lot of watch for less than $900. Decorated and personalized movement, exhibition caseback, 300m of water resistance, ceramic bezel; the only area that I find lacking is in the power reserve, but there have to be trade offs.
