I've often been curious what folks on here do, how old they are, and family situation. I think I make decent money, but I have 3 kids in daycare so it doesn't feel like it right now. I'll stick with my Apple Watch for now and lurk until something changes.

I've mentioned before that I would not be able to afford the watches I've bought in the last year if I had a wife or kids, and my entire collection is going to be cheaper than Silian Rail's new VC.

I'm in my late 20s and hope one day to grow my business to a point where I can expand the collection even if a family is added. But if that never happens then I'll just cherish the pieces I acquired in an earlier life stage and enjoy the hobby from a different perspective.

on a funny note, when I was doing my homework on the watch and reading the reviews the pro's were pretty consistent, they liked the stainless steel bracelet, they liked the green coloring and the new modern 42mm size; but the cons were also extremely consistent that it only had 30m water resistance.

Now 30m isn't a lot in insaneo dive watch territory, but you can practically do everything with it but swimming and above. I can't imagine a single person who would be like "well I love my patek, but I hate the fact I can't swim with it on" madnesss

I have a good friend that swims in his Nautilus all the time. To be fair, that watch has 120m resistance so that's a different ballgame, but it's a great flex.

Even better, I went by DeBoulle (the Patek AD) and they confirmed it was real and took a link out for me. Awesome Rolex AD and Patek AD with incredible service. Hopefully they will actually put me on the list for the few Rolexes I still want, but I should probably wait for a while before buying another one.

I'm not a luxury watch person so may be missing some of the intricacies in the manufacturing of patek philippe watches, but simply demand. Patek has done things that built their brand, all watches are completely hand made if I'm not mistaken, they use more expensive/precious materials in the movement of the watch then most, and they've basically become pieces of art as well as highly desired status symbols.

Price it takes to make a watch, including materials, like almost every other good, has little to do with the selling price of the good. Sure, it'll dictate if they can stay in business manufacturing and selling, but supply/demand will dictate price. That being said, I'd assume Patek watches have a significantly higher COGS than say Rolex simply because the time taken to make them as it's all handmade...

I believe Patek makes somewhere around 50,000 watches per year, whereas Rolex makes a little over a million so the prestige and scarcity factor certainly plays a large part.

Also, this watch is best thought of as a $60,000 watch; yes the watch is inflated due to the crazy state of the market, but Patek has an MSRP of around $62k which obviously is still a lot for a stainless steel watch.

I'm sure the annual calendar movement is very intricate and likely expensive and they do pay a lot of attention to detail, but they still don't get you anywhere near the price point.
