The nice thing with bronze is that you can fairly easily "reset" it.

Unfortunately, I lost my Aggie ring years ago. I got too fat to wear it, took it off and never found it again after many moves.

Moonswatch update for those that care (and because someone has to balance out Silian Rail's purchase!):

I stopped by the Toronto location recently and they only had green Earth one. Not one of the few I'm really hoping for, so I passed. Apparently they have had several of them (the green) in stock for a few weeks and nobody is buying that particular one. They have not received a shipment of other colors for weeks per the employee.

I assume the Galleria store is likely the same, but haven't been by there since the week of the initial release.

I've often been curious what folks on here do, how old they are, and family situation. I think I make decent money, but I have 3 kids in daycare so it doesn't feel like it right now. I'll stick with my Apple Watch for now and lurk until something changes.
Similarly curious & interested in others as well...

c/o '00, kids, office job, decent money (none spent on watches, yet.) Mrs got me a nice mid-ranger swiss chrono for wedding present. I was leery of wearing it early on & only took it out of safe for special occasions. But daily wear finally grew on me over time. Fast forward a few years and I hit fairly big on a friendly sporting wager (complete luck, couldn't repeat if I tried.) I spent the proceeds on stocks which further appreciated nicely. Few months later sold some earnings to buy myself another mid-ranger (Tudor, pre-owned.) Love it, wear it everywhere. Also have dad's old Omega from 70's, currently not running & needs service.

Other random thoughts...
If you spend above about $4k & do some homework going in, you can get yourself a jewelry quality piece - meaning a luxury investment that will retain & maybe even appreciate in value, allowing you to flip/sell/trade into something nicer in the future if you want to. Under $4k seems like depreciation is a given, in my personal experience.

Why is it that your basic middle class dude is expected to drop $10k+ on an engagement ring in his 20's, but questions his sanity about buying a $10k watch until he is XX years old or makes XX salary/bonus?

Lastly, if I had held onto the Tudor money, it would now be Yacht-Master money. Oh well, live and learn.

Great post, the only thing I'll argue with is calling Tudor a mid-ranger, they're midrange only in the luxury section of the watch world, which is like the difference between being an average athlete and an average athlete in the NFL.

You hit the nail on the head regarding the "investment" nature of the watch. I look at every nice watch I buy as a wearable investment. For the most part once you're going to sell a watch as "pre-owned" you're already taking a hit against "bnib" so as long as you don't absolutely screw it up the money is going to be around the same whether you wear it or not.

Take a rolex DSSD cameron for example; you buy one of those for $14k and wear it for 5 years, in an absolute worst case scenario and it's worth 1/2 of what you've paid for it, you rented a Rolex for $116.67/mo (inflation notwithstanding). Some people have $116.67 in netflix/hulu/planetfitness/car wash subscriptions they don't even know or aren't using a month. Most likely, you probably come out a little bit ahead on the price; and essentially break even with inflation and wore a rolex for 5 years for free.

That's why I bought the Patek and I don't consider my watch purchases to be "extravagant" unless I make a mistake and get one for a bad price. That's why sometimes the watches I like the most are the Ultra Chron Longines I posted earlier, those I know are going to tank most likely; those I buy just because I like them and plan on keeping them forever.

Did some watch admiring in Miami's fashion district today. Stopped by Omega, Grand Seiko, and Cartier.

I only need about $20k to snag my choice from each of them.

Did the same in Bellagio a couple of weeks ago. Seemed like Omega was the only one that was fully stocked.

I like that new Grand Seiko SLGA015, the rip current patterned dial is amazing; they're getting a bit big for their britches at $12k though.

Lots of similar thoughts to this response. I'm class of '08, married, 3 kids in daycare, office job, decent money, none spent on watches yet. Mrs got me a Tag as a wedding present.

Agree 100% on the engagement ring vs watch question. A few months ago I showed my wife my "goal" watch - when I get a bonus after we are already meeting all of our financial goals, don't owe anything on a car, don't have kids in daycare, etc. It's a steel and gold Glashutte SeaQ Panorama Date that looks like it's about 12K, and she was shocked I'd ever want to spend that much on a watch. First thing I brought up was her ring. Plus some nice handbags that I've bought her since then. Interestingly enough, that logic worked on the first try. I picked a winner.

Grand Seiko's pricing brings up an interesting point. The dollar is up 35-40% against the yen. Wouldn't Grand Seiko be able to offer cheaper prices (in dollar terms) at this point? And same for non-Swiss Euro watchmakers?

I liked this one a lot at $6k. You can't tell in the picture because of the lighting (and the plastic wrap as well), but it has a very subtle blue hue to the dial when you view it from the right angle.

Totally different, but there could be some fun conversations debating the quality and movements of GS vs Rolex and Omega.

Coming down from $100,000 to $1,000, I thought my first foray into sight unseen, online purchasing should be something bronze. The blue dial, bezel and strap perfectly match the scrubs I wear to work every day and although I was afraid the bronze would be too blingy, I like it enough I'll be sad that it's going to patina.

They'll come up with some reason to rake in, currency changes only go one way. When the dollar devalues they have to charge more, when the dollar strengthens they "pay all their bills and employees in US dollars so there is no difference"

My first watch purchase was justified in precisely this manner. It was a gift to myself if I never got around to spending five figures on jewelry for someone else.

If I ever needed to spend five figures on someone else, then I knew I already had the money saved/set aside and could sell the watch to pay for a ring if I needed to.

But on the Grand Seiko talk:

This is one I know I'm adding to my collection at some point (hopefully) soon. I've loved the thought of the Spring Drive movement, but their dressy/every day look of most of their watches isn't really my style. Finally found one I can't stop thinking about.

Okay, so here's something I've been trying to figure out for a while...

On Chrono24, for the GMT models I'm interested in, you can buy brand new from Japan for about 1/3 off retail. (Retail on those is $6,200) Grand Seiko hasn't appeared to be one you can typically get hefty discounts on, at least in my little research. You look for the same model/condition here locally and there's nowhere near that markdown.

What's going on here? Chrono24 has authenticity guarantee, and these sellers have stellar reviews both on the site and elsewhere. I guess your paperwork is going to be in Japanese, but who cares about that?

I haven't looked at other models to see if it's similar, but I'm really tempted to pull the trigger on one of these GMTs, because that's a hefty discount compare to anywhere else I've looked.

When I purchased the bronze Aquitaine, I went ahead and clicked the button on this as well. Nice thing about CW is you can get 2 well made watches for the price of one. Only problem is even though and grew up in Houston and I'm an Aggie through and through, now I live in Boise and these are dangerously close to BSU colors.
