I can't believe the dress code police haven't already raided this thread to tell you that wearing a watch to a black tie event is a crime against humanity.

white tie. These days, you can get away with anything at a black tie event. But god forbid you've got even a slight smudge on your spats for a white tie affair.

Anyone here even been to a white tie affair? Closest I've been is watching it on Downton Abbey (wife likes it LOL)

Guess I'm uncultured. Was not aware you weren't supposed to wear a watch to a black-tie affair, and I've never heard of a white tie affair.

I wish we could create a private club where we could borrow watches from others close by. Maybe even cufflinks or similar stuff. We'd have to have insurance and contracts, but it could be cool.

I have a black tie event in a couple weeks and would love to have something more event appropriate (and either white or black) instead of my Bluesy.

Just for conversation sake - what is your dream black tie watch?

Right now mine is a Reverso. Considering it as my next watch purchase, maybe in a year or so.

Honestly, I hadn't thought about it much. My current situation in life wouldn't allow it so I tend only allow myself to dream more along Tudor BB58-925, Longines Hydroconquest, Omega, Breitling Heritage, etc instead Just incase I might be able to scrape together a couple of grand.

Attainable?
Maybe a slate Datejust?

Never going to happen?
Maybe something like this, but that's never going to be an option for me unless I hit the lotto.

No need to poo-poo Longines - I wear my Hydroconquest about 20x more often than my Datejust. I think they're a great place to go for a "fill-a-need" piece.

As for dress watches they've got several in there whether you want a complication like that VC, or something more formal.

The only time I ever come close to a black-tie event is NYE, and the whole reason for the occasion is the time. I think it would be silly not to have a timepiece on your wrist in that situation.

If I ever get married I'll wear a tux - if Farmer wants to chide me for wearing a Reverso (or even a Datejust) on my wedding day I'll make sure he gets an invitation.

Times change.

Society as a whole has evolved quite a bit the last 20 years. Most of the uber elite rich are more of the turtle neck variety these days with tech leading the way since the turn of the century. They try hard to act more "normal" while flaunting gatches and toys from mega yachts than trying to be high class.

Most black tie affairs around here are really just more of a formal event than the old meaning of black tie. White tie today is more along the lines of what most people used to think about black tie anyway as someone said. Anyone taking the snob approach isn't someone who would matter. Where else would ultra luxury watches be event appropriate if it wasn't black tie these days?

With all the "class warfare" woke anti-work youngsters these days many who could just aren't going to wear A. Lange & Sohne around the mall.

It's funny. I just don't like the Reverso / Cartier style rectangle watches. Just not my thing. All the woman in my family wore that style growing up and I think that jaded me even though they are beautiful watches.

We seem to have similar taste though. I really like the JL Master watches as well. It would be between one of those and the slate Datejust for me. About the same cost. Rolex is just more recognizable to the average person.

Yeah, I've been to several black tie affairs in my time and half the group still just wears suits. I've always worn my nice watch to these events because if not there; then where?

Nope. It was inside my jacket and I was picking up dinner from a restaurant and it got hung up on part of their counter and I knew something wasn't right immediately. I've been meaning to switch back to the steel bracelet anyways.

Ha! Apparently!

More than three hours after I posted a picture from my phone of the watch on my wrist, it's still flagged for review.
