i'm aware of their fame. are you saying that i was mistaken in saying that rolex and omega are more prominent/recognizable in the high end watch world?

I think the Tank has a very solid reputation as a dress watch in the luxury watch world.

But really nothing else by Cartier

I'm guess I'm not sure what you're arguing. Cartier is a jewelry watch maker...they're not competing with Omega and Rolex. I don't think you would find anyone in the "high end watch world" who is surprised they make watches though.

I love that Bond Seamaster on NATO, but the black dial with rubber strap would be my second choice, and it's in the price range.

Ballon Bleu is probably the most popular. Tank is a quartz isn't it?

I do too but well above the indicated price range.

I like it so much that I actually put an Omega Spectre NATO band on my Speedmaster to sorta recreate that look. I would've done it on my Seamaster but my Seamaster stainless bracelet is interlinked with the lugs so it doesn't have traditional pins where you can swap out the bands like most. It's a very odd year where they did that.

if you said "i just got a luxury watch", most people (not on this thread) would be at least mildly surprised that it was a cartier. that's all i'm saying. it's not what most people think of when you say luxury watch. and dare i say that some people wouldn't know that cartier still made watches.

I know the faux patina on the markers is divisive, but I personally really like it. I would like to see it on more Seamasters.

A Tudor Black Bay, Black Bay 58 or Pelagos would be my other choices in that price range.

This is what is great about the market today and all the options. I personally can't wrap my brain about buying an expensive watch to put a nylon or rubber strap on it. I know its common and James Bond made it cool, it just blows my mind. Cheapens the watch for me.

Cartier has great brand recognition, but this is the first time they've ever come up in a nice watch conversation for me. It's the equivalent of buying jewelry from a famous watch maker. Doesn't mean it isn't beautiful jewelry with value, it just isn't the same as going with a jeweler like Cartier. Same for Cartier watches.

It's a much more popular watch option for women, but if you're talking about a dress watch, they're considered some of the best.

I'm surprised to hear that some people weren't aware they made watches, but I guess I learned something.

I had a Tag for 25 years and decided I wanted a Rolex but I got tired of playing the game (wanted a new one and didn't want to go to the gray market), so I bought a Tudor and have been very happy with it.
Rolex is the king. I love mine. I'm just not sure I would spend $15k-$25K on another Rolex instead of buying 2-5 other nice watches for Tudor, Breitling,Omega, Oris, Nomos, etc.

It used to make me proud to wear my Rolex. Now I'm more worried about getting mugged and tend to not wear it as much as I should. I got nervous when a guy at the carwash made a comment about it the other day. Multiple nice watches at a fraction of the price not as much. Especially since the average thug wouldn't know what a Tudor is, but he damn sure knows what a Rolex is.

$50 band on a $15k watch to me.

Like putting a spoiler from a Miata on a Ferrari.

Again, why all the options are great. We don't need to agree and thankfully there's so many options we don't have to settle for what each other like.

For me it's about variety and fit for the day/activity. I have a Glashutte Original with a polished stainless bracelet and a Seamaster with a brushed stainless bracelet. I have a NATO strap on my Speedy, a rubber strap on my SKX, and a leather strap on my Marlin. They all have their purpose. I still have the original bracelets if I want to sell, but how many stainless bracelet variations does one guy need?

There's a reason why all the brands have different, well defined styled bands.
How many horses does a muscle car really need?
How many guns does a guy really need?

I too hope some day I have enough money to no longer care about substance.

If it's my first watch and I have 4k to spend omega 300 is my #1 choice. They retail slightly hgher but you can easily get 20% off and free shipping / insurance / 0 sales tax from an AD in California. Did it several times. Here is a link to a grey just for reference.

That all black Seamaster about 4 down from the top would be $4k well spent on a first piece in the collection. Especially for a golf, fish, hunt type guy.

My man! 100% agree. Best one of the bunch. Incredible watch.

Unless you're ok only getting the stainless, yes. And go up to $40K. If you can find one.

More comfortable than steel, better for daily wear than leather, especially if you do actual work/sweat. Can wear a nice watch without it being as flashy as it would be with the steel bracelet. Plus the NATO and rubber straps are super comfortable in all the situations. Also, if you don't work in as dressy an environment.

I have four nice watches, two with leather, one with steel, one with NATO. I wear the NATO one the most.

I second this. I have one on a Rubber B and it's on my wrist the most these days.

No right or wrong, though. Just enjoy them in good health!

Opposite for me. The metal bands are better for my wrist.

Rubber is extremely uncomfortable and a hair grabber. Nylon doesn't hold the watch in place unless I crank it down way too tight.

Like I said. Aren't options grand!

If you like chronographs and want to save some of that $4k for later, here are a couple of options I think look nice.

I love the look of Chronos.

Never need the use of them for anything and they're typically more expensive than non-chrono models.

Those are the two reasons I haven't pulled the trigger on one. But both of these are pretty reasonably priced, all things considered. Each one less than $2,600.

I have pretty hairy arms, but the rubber never really pulled at it.

My NATOs seem to have more options than the steel. Have to take out a bigger part of the bracelet on steel, than going one hole on a NATO, so much easier to get a good fit on the NATO.

One of my leather bands has a deployment clasp, so that is the easiest to get a perfect fit, but it is also more of a pain. Plus, I hate sweating in leather, which is hard not to do in Houston.
