$70 million for a High School stadium is either extravagant or extremely overpriced. Take your pick.

There is very small window allowed for playing Varsity football games.

This is an invalid argument for building a $70 million shrine to wasteful spending.

I never claimed the two were mutually exclusive.

That being said, what made the stadium a shrine?

It would be more expensive to build stadiums at each school. That's the whole poing of having a district stadium.

$10M at 7 schools is cost neutral to one $70M stadium. Each stadium is just not a palace.
It would be chcheaper to build one $10mm stadium that is shared, assuming that was possible

So this stadium was not going to be the same level as Berry Center and Allen HS, right?

most high schools already have a full sized field for practice, they could easily put in nice bleachers for way less than $10 million if they wanted too.

Each school in El Paso has their own "stadium" that hold around 5 - 10k and they certainly didn't spend millions on them.

I think all of these schools already have the land because they have on-campus fields where the freshman and jv teams already play every week.

I voted it against because we don't need a $70 million HS stadium. Also if you're going to make your schools work with a lean staff, which I have no problem with at all, you better not give voters a choice on a $70 million stadium.

Maybe shrine is the wrong word. How about highly visible example of extremely wasteful spending of public funds.

I have a hard time taking you seriously when you ask if the most expensive high school football stadium ever is extravagant.
Smokedraw01

I'm just asking what makes it extravagant? What feature bothered you the most?

Without knowing anything in particular about it, I'd say the $70 million price tag is a bit worrisome. Thankfully I don't live on the high prairie of Katy.

The price tag. If my wife wanted to buy a $250,000 bentley I wouldn't be asking which features about it were extravagant I would say that it is asinine to buy a $250,000 car.

Again, I asked what feature about the stadium made it extravagant. The price is not a feature.

I can tell you right now that the will not be building stadiums at the schools. So next year they will roll out another bond with the stadium and add on the STEM, Ag Barn, and numerous schools that are needed. So at that point, it will pass because parents in the area will vote on it. This time they didn't have enough to parents at the schools to vote on. Next time they will.

How the **** is the price not an issue? Tell the truth, you sit on that board don't you

I didn't say it wasn't an issue. I asked what is extravagant about the stadium.

Whatever makes it 70 million

It is hard to know what extravagant features there are. On the district's website you get a few architectural renderings. I guess we needed to pass the bond to find out what you get for your $70 million.

I think a modernized Rhodes stadium with similar features would have been adequate to fill the district's need. Can you tell me with a straight face that a stadium comparable to Rhodes would cost that much when they already own the land?
Smokedraw01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have no idea. The idea isn't that Rhodes isn't meeting our needs, it's that our needs have exceeded what Rhodes can do. One game on Thursday, one on Friday, and two on Saturday as it stands now. Adding another school will cause a serious scheduling issue.
AnchorageAg

That is why I suggested building a stadium comparable to Rhodes right next door for substantially less money than the failed bond.

I feel like I am talking in circles and you are bringing up the same points over and over. Better luck in 2015 getting something reasonable on the ballot that rational people will vote for.
Smokedraw01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not upset that it failed. I just think there are some in Katy that have unreasonable expectations. The next bond will pass and it will probably have that stadium in it anyway.
MelvinUdall

It will pass this next time around because there will be schools attached to it and if you have seen some of the schools on the far west side of Katy with 10-20 standalone builidings next to schools, then you will know why it will pass. This stadium would not pass on it's own, too many conservative minded folks that would vote for eventual higher taxes.

Maybe Katy could have bought the astrodome and repurposed it.

It's not about wanting a bigger stadium, it's about not having varsity games on Thursday night, and having to do two games at one stadium on Saturdays.

Did I see somewhere there are 7 HS in Katy. You can only get 3-games from 7-schools. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. Why would the 4th school not play away (non-district?)

Can you imagine the backlash of building a nice 10,000 seat stadium for one Katy school

No HS in Houston needs a 10,000 seat stadium. They are NEVER FULL. Barely half full for ‘big’ games.

He’s suggesting putting 3-4k seat, modest stadiums (one deck, not huge double deck concrete palaces) at each school. Let them have their own home fields. It sounds like they already have field turf at most of them anyway. You could do this for $5-6M per site. No need for fancy scoreboards or seat back chairs.$5M will buy you a lot of stadium seating on already existing sites. Virtually every HS in Katy has 2 practice fields AND a Sub-Varsity stadium. Expand the existing stadium with larger bleachers, more bathrooms, concessions and parking. The district would have to be smart about scheduling and rotate the scheduling at Rhodes but it could be done.

Not to mention having the stadium AT the school removes the need for buses for the home team and the home team band. Just lowered school costs right there.

And, it gives every school a true home field.

The more responsible thing to do would be to build one modest stadium for the whole district.

Can you get a "modest" stadium for $40M...in Texas....

Nice little shout out to Katy.

I'm not saying this would have happened if a giant stadium was built in Katy but it sure gives all of us who voted against it a chuckle.

Please clarify what was wrong? Katy does not currently have 6HS's?
10,000 Seat Stadiums are rarely full? (I went to 20+ hs games the last few years in CFISD and even the playoff games against Klein schools were not full).

Someone posted they already have field turf at most schools? Not true?

Don't have 2-practice fields and a sub-varsity stadium? EVERY school in CFISD has at least two practice fields. Some have more. I would guess Katy is similar.

Please clarify where I posted wrong information?

Not all the games in Katy ISD are full, but all the games featuring southside Katy ISD schools as well as Katy HS typically are near capacity on their side of the stadium. Katy HS alone could justify the need for a bigger seating capacity.

Does anyone outside of Katy HS fill up a stadium.
