The toughest parts of 5th ward and the toughest parts of 3rd ward are about the same. Neither really make me break a sweat. Seen rougher in DC and NOLA.

Playing junior high basketball in the greater Houston Catholic School league introduced young suburban prep schoolers to life on the other side of the tracks. I recall watching two players at Our Mother of Mercy trade out their one pair of tennis shoes when they substituted in and out, and taking dirt roads past blocks of houses with chickens running around in the front yards. That was in the fifth ward. St. Peter's off of O.S.T. had a gym with a narrow court and seats right on the sideline which made breaking their full court press all that harder. Plus they had fans in the neighborhood that would taunt you as they left the KFC accross the street while you were warming up in the parking lot. Queen of Peace, Ressurection, and Our Lady of Fatima were pretty rough too. I still smile everytime I pass Our Lady of Guadalupe (a block down from the original Ninfa's on Navigation), they were our first win. Chumps!

I do ghetto runs for fun because I have to drive all over this city for work. I have been to most of the areas mentioned in this thread. Jenson north of I-10 is easily the worst. Acres Homes might come in 2nd.
You can drive through these areas during the day and be just fine. Most of the people living there are still sleeping.

Y'all would have loved Critical Mass tonight. We rode down Quitman, then north on Elysian. We turned east on Cavalcade and rode right into the heart of the Bloody 5th. Cruised down Broyles until it turned into Waco Street. Then we rode down Navigation to Wayside. Took Wayside to Lawndale, then to Telephone Road and Leeland. We cruised Leeland back into town.
We hit nearly every ghetto outside of Southside and Southwest. People were happy to see us. No one got shot.

SW gets my vote, & its the most diversified area of town. Where Asians pop trunk. Apartment complexes are essentially projects. & Hillcroft is the Mecca of knock off purses.
