We just moved from Richardson to Flower Mound a couple of weeks ago. Our oldest started kinder last week. This is the note we received from her principal:

Masking
We continue to encourage masking in our schools, especially those who are unvaccinated. LISD leadership is closely monitoring the legal challenges to the governor's executive order prohibiting the district from requiring masks, and masks will remain optional in LISD until those legal challenges are resolved.

AG Paxton has a site tracking non-compliance and he plans on updating this to reflect changes to their compliance.

I did not see one mask (teacher, staff, parent, or student) at our elementary school this morning. Our school is busting at the seams with growth. I feel blessed to just happen to find myself in a corner of the world where a heavy majority of parents, the school board, & the superintendent are of one mind on this issue.

Paris ISD changed the dress code for school to require a mask, because the Guv'nah aint got control over that!

Isn't it still forcing kids to wear masks? Not sure how this holds up.

No no no. You just don't get it.

It's like a dress code, not a mandate. Totally different.

Dress code? Now, that plays completely into the, "It's about control" argument. Nice choice.

I love this because before covid, our RISD school principal specifically stated to parents that students weren't allowed to wear hoodies with the hoods up because they wanted to see the faces of the kids and clearly know who was in their school at all times, for security and safety purposes. (They also reneged on no cell phones in classrooms and no backpacks.) While I like the flexibility it just illuminates to the students the standards are arbitrary and can change for no clear reason.

Have you brought that up to the Principal and asked for some contextual feedback on the two decisions? I'd be interested to know the logic behind it. Just thinking that the "risk" associated with the mask is taken as palatable considering COVID. Let us know what you get back.

So could a superintendent, if he or she were so inclined, add a sidearm to the teachers' expected dress code? For protection, obviously.

Well of course not! Firearms are specifically addressed in state laws prohibiting the...oh, wait...

Or could they just require that all students attend naked because that's the new dress code to prevent students from bringing items into the school in their pockets. I mean laws don't matter right? This is for safety. Too ridiculous.

I know this is an RISD thread but it's relevant.

Plano is having an Emergency Board Meeting on August 23 at 8AM. All about masks. Fully expect a mask mandate. Wife and I likely both to attend. This will never end.

Which, if you believe masks work, is a day late and a dollar short.

Texas likely already peaked on the epi curve and it looks like Hospital growth is stalling out. Most likely a peak in hospitalizations in the next few days.

We will. I am curious the turnout as this meeting is not advertised widely and is at a time parents are taking kids to school and going to work. Thankfully I am at a point in my career and work for a group that won't care if I roll in 3 hours late.

Wife and I are fairly well resigned to the fact. Looks likely to be a 4/3 vote in favor.

Just can't sit back and be silent about it anymore even if doesn't impact short term.

The crazy thing right now they are deciding to add mask mandates during a time when every day we continue to come off the spike. I still constantly hear people worry about the Delta variant being much worse than the original who are surprised when you tell them the actual data. People just buy in to the media and politically driven talking points.

I agree you have to speak up. It's just frustrating as hell. It's getting to where you have to move to a place like Tyler or go to a non catholic Christian school to get away from the Covid crazies.
Agree. Unless they go full stupid on decisions we plan to "stay and fight" for this year and rethink for next year. Wife would likely have to work to put both kids in private so it would be a big decision.

It's discouraging.

I think we are close to peaking but I don't think it's happened yet. Florida probably has or will in the next couple days.

We've already peaked in Dallas county though based on their data. Week before last was significantly off the peak and then last week continued a steep decline in positive cases.

Notice that he was all about the total new cases earlier but in that tweet he doesn't show new cases, only new suspected cases in the hospital. The total cases going up or down has tended to precede the hospital numbers. I can't figure out how to screenshot that pdf on my phone but Dallas county absolutely is showing number of cases declining off the peak over the last few weeks. It's in that link I posted a few back. I want everybody to be safe and appropriately cautious, but I hate the misguidance by politicians as a means to an ends.

RISD officially announced that they are joining the La Joya lawsuit in Travis County.

Link

Now they are spending our money to fight for this crap in court.

Hopefully this at least creates the avenue for them to be specifically struck down.
