Just out of curiosity, what is the cheapest 1 BR or studio that you can get in the uptown area?

Uptown is not that out of reach. Most places offer a studio that will be about $800 or so. There is usually a drastic increase to around 1100 or more when you talk about a full 1 BR.

That being said you can find deals right now. I have used:
www.rentmoney.com

They usually have good move in deals and will give you rent ammounts.

Hopefully I'll be moving there in May...A studio would be fine, I'd take that over a nice 1BR for $800 in the suburbs...Location is what its all about.

texasaggie you are so 100% correct.

My gf and I are recent grads we moved out to ft worth and chose this 1300 sq feet huge apt instead of one in downtown ft worth. We were like oooh it's just 15 minutes to downtown we're close enough... ooh we're close to some restaurants and stores...

Well a month into it, we were just blaaah about the location. We can't wait to move. Our new hunt is also in uptown... we've pretty much decided on State Thomas area right there on mckinney walking ditance (like a 2 minute walk) to the bars/food/nightlife etc

Location is key. Everyone kept trying to tell me to move to downtown... lesson learned.

If I were you, I'd go for the smaller place in the middle of all the action then a big place that involves a 10 minute drive to all the action.

This will be awesome, I'm jealous. That's a very cool area in the spring - fall....you can walk to tons of restaurants, bars, patios, etc....and take the trolley to other places!

I made the drive this morning from Addison to Westlake for an interview. The drive was around 45 minutes but could have been shorter had google maps not taken me for a detour.

Here is a question for you guys. My gf works in Lewisville and we're both looking to move once our lease is up. If this Westlake job works out, what would be a good spot for the both of us(Me commuting to Wesklake/Her commuting to Lewisville)? First thought is Grapevine by looking at a map but I have no idea how the young crowd is there.

I commute from Lakewood to Lewisville and it isn't that bad. I can't immagine Westlake would take much longer. Therefore go downtown and enjoy your life.

the state-thomas area is great. an architect friend of mine lived in a renovated "house of ill repute" on state street that her friend bought and redid. it was cool, there were little buzzers on every door. this was way before they started building all those apartments over there.

I've read State Street can get loud and if I choose them... to find a unit on Thomas Ave... apparently state st is the most used street on the weekends and in the area in general?

Really looking forward to touring this weekend the Manchester Brownstones

Commute-wise Grapevine would be ideal for the couple looking to split Westlake and Lewisville.

Can't comment on the younger crowd in the area as I'm an old man.

Have you thought about Las Colinas? I live here and love it. Without traffic, I'd say the drive is 20-30 minutes. I'm not sure how the traffic would be for you, but I believe you'd be going "against" traffic for most of your rush hour commute.

Where exactly is Las Colinas? Is the rent relatively affordable there?

Las Colinas is non-crappy part of Irving, TX. It has its own name because Irving, for the most part, is a dump.

If you want to have a life outside of work, don't live in Las Colinas.

Las Colinas is not a good destination for somebody that wants to live somewhere fun. It will be better for your commute but you will be driving every weekend to do anything fun outside of restaurant bars.

Rent is fairly reasonable. I pay $900 for a 800 square foot apartment in a nice building. LC is very centrally located, I can be in uptown in less than 30 minutes and in downtown fort worth in less than 45. PM if you want a specific apartment recommendation.

to driving 30-45 minutes to uptown dallas and downtown ft worth...

Pick one and live there. You don't wanna do that to yourself on the weekends, especially if you're in your 20s

not gonna lie.

nothing in downtown fort worth or dallas beats No Frills Grill in south arlington

I would love to see some of you make it from Uptown to Westlake in 30 mins.

You don't want to live in Las Colinas, it's a graveyard after dark full of overpriced apts. PLUS it's on the wrong side of the 114 work.

I pay $978 for an 800 sq ft. apt. in Uptown and can be in Downtown FW in 35 minutes.....

Like I said, don't do Las Colinas if you want to have a life outside of work.

I commute from the M Streets to downtown Fort Worth everyday and the drive is almost exactly 40 minutes. From uptown Dallas to downtown Fort Worth would be just over 30 minutes.

That being said, if my wife didn't work in downtown Dallas I would absolutely live in downtown Fort Worth or somewhere along 7th.

Uptown would probably be my pick right out of school. I never went to Addison though so it wouldn't have been even considered for me. I love living in Lakewood, East Dallas now but I think at your age uptown should be the winner.

Most of the folks that I know prefer Addison over uptown any day. There is parking, more centrally located, not as many affliction shirts, etc.

I think one of the best descriptions of uptown that I have heard is that it is a bunch of 30kaires playing city.

By the way, my girlfriend lived in uptown since it was close to her work. She changed jobs and it was midway between uptown and Addison. She moved from a two year old apartment building to a nicer one year old one, gained 50 sqft, and is saving over $400/mo.

I hate when people who have never been to uptown or the surrounding area post about it. The largest # of DBags in the metroplex are located in Addison. It is where the 30k millionaire was born.

I don't live in uptown as I am more of an east sider (Henderson, Greenville, Lakewood) but I do spend some time there and you almost never run into an affliction shirt.

The few times I've been there I've never run into any more or less d-bags than bars in CS, Houston, etc have....I've definitely never been in one where there was an unusually large number of affliction shirts.

I think it's the same as people saying that Logans and the Corner in CS have "a bunch of frat guys with popped collars"...couldn't be further from the truth.

Agree on above uptown comments, if I worked downtown I would have been inclined to rent or buy down there.

I don't know much about uptown but I interned in Addison for a summer and didn't like it. Way too many d-bags out and about.

I think you have your parts of town completely turned around. Addison is home to the affliction shirt.

OP:

If you're working in Westlake, give up on living in Dallas Co. The 114/121 highway work that's starting up in Grapevine/Irving will make that the commute from hell.

Downtown Ft. Worth has some very nice apts, particularly on the west side. Friend of mine lived at the Firestone for a month for work and loved it.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
the drive from downtown fort worth to westlake is virtually the same as from uptown to westlake in the mornings. .. .it will take you about 30 mins from downtown ft worth to westlake and roughly 30-35 mins in the morning from uptown. .. as you will be driving against traffic from both directions. . .

having said that, you want to live in a cool place. dont tell yourself you will want to drive to the cool places every weekend as this will not end up happening. i live in westlake now and work in downtown ft worth. . .i also used to live in uptown for 2 years so what im telling you is the most accurate advice you're going to get on this board: live in uptown
TXAGFAN
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah...except the whole 114/121 mess the above post may be true.
Ed Carter
How long do you want to ignore this user?
the 121/114 "mess" isnt going to be that bad for someone going against traffic at that time of morning. .. it will not trump the fact that you will be living in the best possible place to live for a (im assuming) young and single guy?
TXAGFAN
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Eh, I dunno. I recognize that traffic is generally less going the other direction, but I took 35-->114 to work in the past for work and it wasn't like there was 0 traffic. It's hard to say how bad 114/121 will be, but could be very bad.

I still vote for ft worth unless there is a compelling reason to live in Uptown (i.e. your girlfriend works in dallas) or something.
