Places to live in Dallas area for a recent graduate?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'll be graduating in May and may be moving to Dallas for work. I have an interview with a company in Westlake.

If I end up working there, I doubt I'd want to live in Westlake. Not ruling it out, just what I've been told.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where I should live that might be 25-30 minutes from Westlake?

Any specific apartment complexes or townhomes that people recommend?

I would say Uptown but that would be to far for you. So....do Addison, TX....excellent for young people right out of college. The whole damn area is made up of people just like you, plenty of places to go out, socialize, etc.!

from Westlake, uptown and Addison would be about an equal distance. I would say Addison over uptown though. Or even look into some of the places along 75 between uptown and 635...will get much more for your money..you can also find a place near a dart rail and access uptown and downtown bars and restaurants within minutes. Addison is good too, just drive around and check out the area and see what fits you.

Thanks y'all. Do you happen to have any specific places you've heard good things about that I should research?

While Addison or uptown might be 30 miles from Westlake it will be much longer than a 30 minute drive. I live in Grapevine and it takes me more than 30 minutes to get to Addison with any type of traffic once I get onto 635.

635 between 35 and the DNT can really suck and the DFW Connector (635/121/183/114 North of the airport) is starting a major reconstruction effort.

You are going to have to make the call on if you want to deal with a ***** commute to be closer to young folks every day or if you want a decent commute on a daily basis with the understanding you'll have to drive to go out to the "younger" places.

Not to sound like a dumbass (dumbass question coming)...where is Westlake?

Ok...just looked it up. I think the above may be poor advice, 114 is about to get torn up isn't it? I would look in Fort Worth or somewhere not on the other side of that mess. I think 30 minutes is very optimistic for estimates from Addison or Uptown, maybe with 0 traffic and 10 miles over the speed limit.

Really need to think about this, that commute will be a bear if you live anywhere east of the tollway whether it's uptown, addison, or all points between. Living in Dallas just may not be in the cards for you.

Yeah...I'm from a small town and I think I'd like to avoid a really bad commute.

I'd like it if I could have a nice 25-30 minute commute that isn't just a total pain.

So y'all think that Fort Worth is the way to go?

I really appreciate the help. I'm not familiar with Dallas at all.

As far as the "younger" crowd. That's always a plus but I think I'd rather make the 30-45 minute drive to hang out there on the weekends and stuff than have to make a long drive to work every single day. If I had to pick at least.

Fort Worth was my first thought when I read "Westlake".

What's the traffic like on I35?

It seems like that's the way to go.

It's still about 26 miles from downtown FW to Westlake according to Google.

Is it recommended to just live downtown or is there some communities outside of FW that are nice and affordable?

An initial google search brought up a place called Sundance Square. Is it just insanely expensive to live there? Looks like it may be.

Lincoln Trinity Bluff, Firestone, Amli, etc., all nice apts downtown. Drive to Westlake from there should take you 30 min max.

Which btw, living in Uptown Dallas, the drive to 360 & 121 took me about 30 min every day. Not sure how much longer it would take to get to Westlake, but you would be going against traffic.

Do you think I'd be having to deal with a lot of traffic if I headed north to Westlake every day from downtown FW? It seems like most traffic would be heading into downtown.

Come to Dallas for two weekends. One weekend, Hangout in Addison, the next Uptown. Then chose.

The worst thing is commuting to where you friends are hanging out.

If you want a young crowd those are the two place to go.

Trinity Bluff mts mentioned is a brand new (less than 6 mos old) complex just north of downtown (121 & 35) that should allow for really easy in and out in the mornings and evenings. (My company installed the stained concrete corridors and balconies there). Traffic shouldn't be an issue traveling against everybody. 35, being 2 lanes there, does tend to back up on occasion. Southlake and Keller have some really nice apts which would provide a quicker commute, but are much quieter in terms of socializing. Addison would be out of the question, if it were me.

I agree with most of the posters here. Based on where you work, you need to call Ft. Worth home. I'd live west of DFW airport if I worked in Westlake.

I live in Dallas, proper, myself and have heard nothing but good things about Ft. Worth and the night life opportunities. Plenty of Ags there and if you're just out of school I have one acronym for you: TCU.

You're welcome.

Trinity Bluff is about 3 years old, I lived there when it first opened. But there are some new apartments that just opened around it.

From Fort Worth heading north, there really isn't a lot of traffic if you go up 35. 183/121/820 is where all the traffic is.

sorry... I meant phases II and III are brand new.

Yeah it really sounds like Fort Worth is where I'll end up. I appreciate the suggestions. I'll definitely check out Trinity Bluff. Any other suggestions are definitely welcomed.

Someone else said it above, but I'd suggest coming up here during the week if you can swing it and test drive your commute during the hours you will be on the road just to make sure you won't want to kill yourself.

you could also look at Austin Ranch in The Colony. There are also alot of great apartment complexes on 190 (George Bush) between the tollway and 35E.

How do you take the dart rail to uptown bars? Not trying to be an ass, just curious.

Stupid question:

Where exactly is uptown?

Remember that I'm not from Dallas.

It'd be nice if someone could give me a map with a circle around that area.

uptown is an area just north of downtown. it's a nice area but pretty expensive. i made the drive from the uptown area to westlake years ago when i was working on the IBM solana project. that is quite a drive and traffic wasn't even as bad back then.

if it's closer and not as much traffic to ft worth personally i would live over there. ft worth is a great place to live and they have have a really good Aggie club group to get involved with. you can always come to dallas to party. let me know when you get settled and we'll meet you at buffalo brothers for drinks.

Thanks Terry!

I'm probably getting ahead of myself a little bit since I haven't even gotten the job yet. But I'm hopeful and think I have a pretty good shot at it. 2nd interview is at the end of March.

I do think that Ft. Worth is where I'll end up if I get the job.

Now I just have to figure out where exactly...

Uptown would probably be my pick right out of school. I never went to Addison though so it wouldn't have been even considered for me. I love living in Lakewood, East Dallas now but I think at your age uptown should be the winner.

That being said Fort Worth is better than all other spots as long as you are down town.

didnt read much of this thread, so im assuming im just restating what others prolly said

1. westlake is not dallas, nor is it close
2. scratch living in addison or uptown, unless you just love paying 500 bucks a month in gas
3. suggest living in north ft worth or downtown
4. grapevine also might be a good place to look
