I once sent a birthday present to a friend who lives in the area. I wasn't going to see her until the weekend. I dropped off the package at the post office near my office, it was delivered to the recipient's house that afternoon.

How many years ago was that?

Every post office I've been to in the last 5 years has ended local routes. In the past, they had an "in town" and "out of town" box. Now everything goes to Austin, Waco, Houston, etc.

My address has two cities that serve it depending on which side of the road the mailbox is on. In the past, when I got a letter addressed to the wrong city, the "wrong" PO would just deliver the package or drop it off at the neighboring city's post office.

Not anymore. It goes to Austin, then Austin screws up and sends it to Denver, who sends it to OKC, who sends it to Waco, to DFW, then back to Austin and finally to me a week later. When it likely would have cost the USPS way less to still manage the local deliveries instead of sending everything to a central sorting/distribution center.

It was late 2010. At the time, Waco's mail was sent to Dallas for processing, but apparently local mail could be intercepted.

Props to Congressman Mccaul, his office resolved a USPS delivery issue in 3 business days that I have been fighting for 7 months.

Shame that you had to call your rep to get some traction. Note to self; Apparently, Rusty can't get any, but Congressmen can.

My son just walked in with a package. He was on campus late and getting home late and passed a USPS Jeep on the road not far from our house and a package was out by our fence.

That's too late. They need to be in bed. We don't need our package that badly.

We had a postal worker stop by our office last week that was from Amarillo. He said that there are workers from across the country here trying to help them got caught up. They are working 12-to-15-hour days in areas that they are not familiar with.

Some of them are good people he said that are really here to help. Some are just here for the extra pay and could care less.

He said the local staffing is horrible. People not caring, calling in sick, etc.

Once they are gone, he predicts it all goes downhill again.

How in the world does the USPS have the authority to make a "student housing" determination about a preexisting apartment complex that has been getting mail delivery for years - likely decades? What are the criteria ? So much unanswered.

That is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. The KBTX article had a link to contact Congressman McCaul because someone at the post office suggested that was the best way to get things fixed. I filled it out in case he doesn't follow KBTX. I don't think the article said they had contacted him. I don't know if this is something where a bunch of people need to send him the same thing or not.

I can't believe the post office can designate apartment complexes "student housing" all of a sudden, hold their mail at the Bryan post office for a couple weeks (ending next week), and then just start returning people's mail to sender (unless they want to pay for PO Boxes).

How can they just cut off delivery to alll those residents? If all those apartments don't have official USPS mailing addresses anymore, what's that mean for anything that requires an address? (drivers license, voter registration, being able to prove you're in Congressman McCaul's district, etc.)

Even when I lived in a dorm I was able to get mail. That was student housing and I think they dropped the mail off to A&M and had A&M put stuff in our boxes. I don't blame the complexes for not wanting to be responsible for people's mail (an earlier article indicated they expected the complexes to put stuff in boxes like A&M dorms used to), but just no mail at all for any of those addresses is unacceptable.

I won't be surprised when they begin to declare whole neighborhoods as student housing and refuse to deliver to those homes.

are students now allowed to have mail either? I can see not delivering to a dorm, but an apartment complex is on private property. Shouldn't matter what the use is, USPS should deliver to it.

This change for apartment complexes based on "student housing" seems to me - not a lawyer for sure - a 5th amendment takings clause issue. It's reducing the value of something without compensation.

If you have an issue contact McCaul's office. The post office is not responding to complaints. At this point Congress is the only entity that can bring change to these issues. And its going to take some time.

I wrote to him but didn't get a reply. I checked the box that said I did want him to contact me.

Anyone else get any kind of reply from McCaul?

Is there anyone else we should also contact to see if they can help put some pressure on the post office to rescind their idiotic decision?

You wrote him a letter, and sent it via the USPS…. And he didn't answer…..

Isn't it ironic?

McCauls constituent office game is not good by reputation. Probably the only thing about him I like less than Carpetbagger Pete.

Well - seems we have two opposite data points. Don't know that is a large enough dataset to establish a pattern. My comment was based on comments I have heard from politicians who should know, but maybe he's ramped up his office.

Some of the subdivisions have kioshs with multiple mailboxes where homeowners go to get their mail. Also, many of the newer apartment complexes also have central mailbox stations.

My mail has gone from four to five political advertisements a day to four to five solicitations begging for money. The mail rate for bulk presorted trash mailings must be really inexpensive.

Two weeks today since this package shipped. NY, Dallas, El Paso, Dallas, Houston, Dallas, Houston, or something like that, it's hard to keep up.

I suppose this is an example of government efficiency. Maybe they'll run out of fuel circling BCS and leave the package nearby.

Some of the frustrations can be summed up in this KTRK story. 'Houston carrier caught with 10k pieces of stolen mail among hundreds at USPS busted for theft'

Quote:

Frank Albergo, president of the Postal Police Officers Association, said what's happening at USPS is a "disaster."

"I hate to say this, but right now there are pockets within America where the mail is unsafe. It's being stolen. It's being ransacked. It's being sold on the dark web. I mean, it's completely out of control," Albergo said. "As a postal service employee, it's sad to see. I mean, this is something that you're proud of. You're proud of the postal service. It's one of the most beloved federal institutions and right now it's under attack. It's under attack by criminals. Criminals are infiltrating the postal service."

Same at my employer.

They keep trying to deliver around 8PM, long after we're closed. Then they don't even attempt it for a day or two because we're "closed."

Then they try to deliver at 8PM and the cycle starts all over again.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

That's ridiculous. You would think they would understand they have to put any place of business on the route for a business hours delivery schedule. Geez.
