More of an unrelated rant, but maybe people in this town would drive better if they weren't randomly faced with unexpected detours through neighborhoods when the two lane road is completely shut down without prior notice. I'm looking at you, Greens Prairie. Is it too much to ask for a sign the day before saying "expect road closures tomorrow"???
From a Castlegate HOA email this afternoon:

  • Larry Young Paving will place concrete pavement overnight on Greens Prairie Road east of Donnington Drive toward Castlegate Drive. The pour is scheduled to begin at 1 a.m. and will last into the morning hours. Area residents especially those that back up to Greens Prairie can expect bright lights and construction noises throughout the night. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. In addition, Thursday morning traffic along Greens Prairie may be delayed as vehicles are flagged through the construction zone one way at a time.

It's a bit late now. Believe that was a few days ago.

The medians up and down Texas are a complete joke. Who were the clown bureaucrats that approved this?

Some places may have needed it I can concede. But all along Texas is just absolutely ridiculous. Waste of money, waste of time, waste of resources, and to some extent it might hurt some of those smaller businesses along the road who have customers that may not wanna u-turn.

Aww c'mon. It will be entertaining when they are done. I can see the headlines now- "Flying cars? intoxicated driver hits median at high speeds and triple somersaults into local business"

Some sort of sting operation needs to be set up on Wellborn Road. This morning, I narrowly...and by narrowly, I mean by mere inches and less than one foot...missed t-boning a moron who somehow managed to CUT THROUGH ALL OF THE CONSTRUCTION BARRICADES AND MAKE A U-TURN SO HE COULD GO MAKE HIS MORNING EFFING DUTCH BROS RUN. And after I managed to stop just short of hitting him, I almost got rear ended by someone coming up behind me.

CSPD could solve our budget issues if they sat out there and wrote tickets all day.

They don't have the manpower for that right now. I rarely even see a cop writing speeding tickets these days.

Happens every day. A couple of weeks ago, a girl in an F250 tried to do it and couldn't quite make the turn. So her solution was to back up into oncoming traffic, causing total chaos. Between that and the people who stop in the left lane in order to turn around at Deacon, it's amazing that there aren't more accidents there.

And then there would be a page of posts complaining that CSPD has nothing better to do than write tickets.

People are going to find ways to get where they need to go, regardless of the medians. Some will be terrifying improvisations.

The CSPD crew that could do it best - the motorcycle guys - are usually set up enforcing school zones (when they're not actually substituting for a crossing guard that called in sick) during the morning problem time.

You are supposed to merge onto the highway at highway speed.

70.

Preferably you'd be at 70 halfway down the entrance ramp, but you better be at 70 by the end. Merging at 40 or 50 mph is extremely unsafe and causes a significant portion of the traffic issues in town.

Same thing with exiting the highway.....don't slow down to frontage road speed until you've already exited the highway. Again, a significant cause of traffic problems.

Got stuck in a group of cars behind a left lane camper all the way from Hearne to College Station on Saturday. Every time an opportunity for someone to pass him would come up, he would speed up/slow down to stay with the car in the right lane. At first, I thought it was intentional, but I think he was just completely oblivious as he was buried in his phone.

Received today from the Castlegate HOA:
Quote:

Good afternoon Neighbors,

Tonight Larry Young Paving will be placing concrete pavement on Greens Prairie Road. The concrete pour is scheduled to begin at 1:00 am and last into the morning hours. The work will begin west of Castlegate Drive and complete before Forest Ridge Elementary School. Residents in this area, particularly those that back up to Greens Prairie Road, should expect bright lights and construction noises throughout the night. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Tuesday morning traffic along Greens Prairie Road near Castlegate Drive will be delayed as concrete trucks deliver concrete, and vehicles are flagged through the construction zone one-way at a time. Expect delays through this area and use alternate routes if possible.

Last night around 945pm I turned south onto Highway 6 from University and a truck was driving the wrong way on the feeder road. I was so unprepared that I almost hit him.

The worst is all the folks in trucks backing into parking spaces everywhere. I guess it's the era of backup cameras, but it's annoying to have to sit and wait, haha.

Sorry, but I'll give those guys a pass, at least in crowded lots (like most of the ones on campus). Because in a crowded lot with perpendicular spaces, it's almost impossible to get a full size pickup into a space between two other cars, at least not without far more forward-back-forward-back-forward-back than is necessary when backing into the space. In most lots (again, almost all of the lots on campus are included in this) the rows and spaces are simply too narrow. I think the lots on campus were laid out with the assumption that everyone parking there was driving an 80s vintage Corolla.

And while widening the rows and/or spaces would help with this problem, that would mean less spaces to sell permits for, which would make it harder for Campus Parking to achieve their goal of raking in more $$$ than the football team.

Angled parking is a different story. People who back into those are a**holes.

In a prior life, we lived near OSR and 6. The access roads switch at 2818 from bidirectional north of 2818 to one way south of 2818. One night while headed home, I turned north onto the west side access road with the car behind me honking at me. Obviously thought I must have been turning the wrong way into a one way, until they got closer to the intersection and realized it wasn't one way.

The switch from bidirectional access roads through town to one way happened while I was in school at A&M.

It can be hard to tell if the access road is one way or bidirectional until you get close if the intersection is poorly lit. But to continue down the road takes missing/ignoring a lot of do not enter signs.

This is especially annoying when there are plenty of spaces in the back of the parking lot to park an oversized pickup truck. I know people like to park next to the venue, but if you own an oversized truck then maybe the extra walk would be good for you?

I back my suv into pretty much every spot. It's just easier to get in and out of.

Am I as bad as trucks? (And yes, I back our truck into spots too when I drive it. And it doesn't have a backup camera)

My complaint on campus is those giant trucks with the mirrors that stick out into the two spaces on either side of them. The spaces could be slightly bigger...but the trucks people drive and park on campus are a bit ridiculous. At least fold in your mirrors.

If everyone backed into the spaces then the gas tanks of each vehicle would be close to the vehicles on all sides (left right and back), since most gas tanks are in the back of the vehicle. This could be a hazard if there is an explosion (say from an over heated EV). The best way to park (safety wise) is for every other vehicle to back in and the vehicle behind any given vehicle is facing the same way.

If you are basing how you are parking on some miniscule possibility that an EV nearby may overheat and explode, creating a chain reaction of exploding vehicles, you may be better off not driving. There's also a chance your car could be struck by lightning while driving. Or hell, than an EV overheats and explodes beside you on the highway.

How is the logic dumb? Parking butt to butt does decrease the distance between flammable objects, or do you deny physics.

Well someone somewhere must have made a huge mistake. For the first time in three weeks, there were people working on Wellborn Road this morning.

I mean, that can't be right.
